My boobs, my business!

I see loads of bra size arguments on here, usually an individual is torn to shreds for stating she either has a 34 band at size 8-10 and is (god forbid it!) comfortable!
How dare she?? Doesn't she know that bra sizing is an SCIENCE that every woman needs to conform to??
Strangers on the internet know far more than you about what band size you ought to wear, and if you claim to be a 34A then you must be fooling yourself.

What the heck is all that about? It's almost militant. Not all bodies are the same. Some women feel better in a slacker band, and there is no perfect standard or science for comfort.
It is up to the individual how they choose to dress their boobs. But 'personal preference' seems to get a lot of people irate for some reason. There's this persistent myth that all women are wearing the wrong bra size, where almost every bra or boob thread gets derailed by.

Why are other women so freakily invested in the band size of other people? If men were demanding our bra choices were all wrong there's be a justifiable uproar. But for me the same applies to women - mind your own business unless the poster has asked for an opinion.

So currently the dogma (and it is fucking dogma) that most women are wearing the wrong bra seems to be acceptable. I have seen images of perfectly lovely silhouettes where the reaction has been extreme - she MUST be wearing the wrong size (God the hOrror!!!) even though she looks fantastic.

Back the hell off!
My body, my bra, my business. If my cup size choice startles you, maybe go for a walk in nature and get the blood pressure back down. Surely IANBU? Grin

Yes, the old method works much better for me too in sizing.

I think lots of bras are still sized that way, no matter what the "new way" says. So women try on a 30 instead of a 34 and obviously can't fasten it up.

And in M&S, add another size as theirs are tiny.

Smoothiecarton · 12/07/2023 16:03

This is so true but in any case bra sizes vary so much by retailer, the only way is to experiment with different shops. Primark band sizes are all over the place compared to say, m&s or somewhere. You can see this in tkmaxx where they have loads of bras from different manufacturers , put two side by side and see the huge differences.

OldBeller · 12/07/2023 16:03

You're right. My sister is much thinner than me and I'm skinny. I'm an E cup, I'd say she was a B.

I can fit in tighter things around my chest because she has a bigger ribcage than me.

It's nothing to do with what size dress you wear.

And yes skinny women with big boobs exist. I'm pretty sure I exist.

On the off chance that you really are sincere...stop. Even if what you're saying is true, that must mean you demand to know from every slim but buxom woman you meet whether she's had surgery or not. Whether you're for real or not, just stop. You are talking rubbish whether you realise it or not.

err no im not obsessed like youve made me out to be you stop

katepilar · 12/07/2023 16:05

Re the bra sizing, I have read some time ago that there is also a difference between UK and European (?) sizing, in terms of whether you measure the band stretched or unstretched. Basically meaning the same bra band would be called different size.

DoctorWoo · 12/07/2023 16:06

I was reading a bra thread on here a little while ago and finding it interesting until a "bra Jesus" proclaimed that unless your bra left deep red grooves in your skin when you took it off then it didn't fit you properly!
I mean FFS. I lost interest at that point and went back to my comfy bras. I'm 54. I've had boobs for a long time. I know what works for me.

Toottooot · 12/07/2023 16:08

Couldn’t give a flying fuck aboot yer tits. 💁🏻‍♀️

12RedRoses · 12/07/2023 14:29

I’d annoy people as I wear pants 2 sizes bigger than my trousers and skirt size. I look better and feel far more comfortable with no digging in/bulging!

"Sizing up" in knickers is an absolute must, especially because manufacturers seem obsessed with making the gusset narrower on the smaller sizes 😑

hammie46i · 12/07/2023 16:16

I agree. Any time I've had a bra sizing and bought bras, I've come out with bras I simply cannot wear and which leave me with deep marks on my flesh when I take them off. Surely it can't be healthy to have bras that tight? I don't even have big knockers so it's not as if I need loads of support.

These days I wear what's comfy. The main function of my bra is to cover my nipples so they can't be seen in public when it's cold! I don't care about support.

ancientgran · 12/07/2023 16:22

bonfirebash · 12/07/2023 13:20

I think part of it is because most people are wearing too big a band and then complain it rubs/they need more support/been measured by m&s/their bra band is up round their shoulders

Personally I get confused when someone is a size 8-10 and wears a 34 band because I'm a 16/18 and wearing a 34 band and I can pull it out too far really, it's genuinely not tight at all (I can sleep in it if I want to)
Because a 34 band is a 34 band. If that makes any sense!

Except it isn't. Brands vary hugely and the only science as far as I'm concerned is take a few bras into a changing room, try them on and regardless of what the label says buy the one that is comfortable for you.

I used to fit bras, years ago, and I've been lectured on here before now about how to fit a bra and yes people can be OTT about it.

I've also been told that as a young woman fitting bras I couldn't possibly have been sexually harassed by customers because they were women. Newsflash women can be predatory and I've seen some sights when walking back into a changing room with a different bra for someone to try. It was an education I can tell you. I learned quickly to back out and get my supervisor to go in, they quickly got their kit back on as she wouldn't stand any nonsense.

YANBU. It's all a bit fanatical with some people on here. I'm sure I don't wear the 'correct' size bra, by most people's definition, but I don't care. I wear what makes me comfortable now, and I have no worries about future back/neck problems, since I'm not particularly well-endowed.

Incidentally, I do wonder if those who wear the teensy-tiny band sizes are the ones who always talk about ripping off the bra the instant they walk through the door at home. It might have more to do with cup size than band length, but I don't feel that way in my probably 'incorrectly'-sized garments. Yes, it feels nice to take them off at night, but I can cheerfully wear them all day without issue and don't feel nearly as comfortable without them on as with them, if I'm up and about.

Nope. I'm a size 10, wear a correctly fitting 30dd, and have no issues with comfort.

My socks leave red marks on my skin. So do my jeans - doesn't mean I'm wearing the wrong size or that they're uncomfortable.

Mirabai · 12/07/2023 16:23

LooseInTheCity · 12/07/2023 15:14

I was always a 34C before I did ‘the bra intervention and measured a 32E.

The 32E bras do look better under clothes, no doubt about it. They make me look a bit slimmer and they cup my breast snugly. But I wear the old 34C ones are weekends as they’re slacker and comfier Grin.

Coincidentally I’m exactly the same as you. I’m 32E but I wear 34C around the house for comfort.

Deep sore marks no
Marks like you get from socks or jeans are pretty normal as long as they're not painful
I will have marks when I take off skinny jeans or tighter socks or a corset etc but they don't hurt
But that's because I need the support from a bra whereas smaller boobs might not

katepilar · 12/07/2023 16:25

Catspyjamas17 · 12/07/2023 15:09

No the misogyny is the idea that you need a bra to "look good" and that apparently you can't look good if you don't wear one.
If someone wants to wear a bra every day they can crack on but I hate the idea that there is something wrong with the normal shape of a woman's breast.

Indeed. Or there is something wrong with your breasts if they are not wired up, scooped up, pushed forward and pushed up under your chin at all times.

Thats exactly how I feel too.
I hate how almost all clothes are made for the breasts that are pushed up.

Unclecornelius · 12/07/2023 16:35

Dh’s aunty had v. big boobs and used to wear a Playtex pull them up and point them out bra.
I think Playtex (and Aunty Sheila) was probably the inspiration for Madonna’s cone bra!

JudgeAnderson · 12/07/2023 16:48

In the interests of science, I've just measured under my boobs. 32 inches. All my bras have a 32 band. So make of that what you will. They don't feel overly tight but I'm now tempted to try a couple of 34s to see if it's comfier.
I carry very little extra padding around my ribs so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Surely people wearing mega-tight bands would have bulges above and below?

Hevasparkle · 12/07/2023 19:33

I must say discovering boob or bust was game changer to me. Used to wear a 36dd and was comfy, didn’t particularly feel unsupported. But horrendous back shoulder problems. Now wear a 30jj and I have no further issues plus my posture is much better. It did take time to get used to a tighter band but now I couldn’t be without it. It sits where it should across my back and supports my boobs properly.

that said, i encourage people to wear what they feel is best. I did suggest boob or bust to a friend once but that was because she couldn’t find a good fit

Yes they do. You see women around in bras with too tight bands - they cut into their fat. It’s not a good look.

JudgeAnderson · 12/07/2023 19:49

It must be miserably uncomfortable as well - ouch.

Curledupwithabook · 12/07/2023 19:51

I get the tit police fuming when I tell them my bra straps slip off. Clearly wearing the wrong size!

Nothing to do with bra though. Always had sloped, narrow shoulders. Pretty much a 45 degree angle. Bra could be tightened to an inch of it's life and it wouldn't have a chance of staying put all day.

I have back fat/bulges/rolls/ whatever you want to call them in a 40 band bra, my old 44 bras and no bra. I'm fat. I have rolls.

Okay?

And in lots of cases it’s due to the band of a bra being too tight.

CoalCraft · 12/07/2023 19:53

It's been so long since I bought bras - probably over a decade, that I genuinely can't remember what size mine are, despite wearing them every day.

I don't see what the fuss is about. Mine are all wire-free multi-packs from m&s and they're perfectly comfy. I have small boobs though.

WeAllKnowHeWillGetAwayWithIt · 12/07/2023 19:56

I wish manufacturers would cotton on to this too!

I am most definitely only an A cup, prob actually a AA and a 36 band, but cant get 36AA/36A for love or money! So end up wearing a 34A and am always uncomfortable.

And if any one suggests it's because I'm more likely to be a B then you are welcome to come and inspect my fried egg boobs and show me how you figure that 😬

I didn't say it wasn't?

Just pointed out some people have rolls/bulge regardless of bra size.
