How far do public waste and dog poo bins need to be from house

Hi,

I’m hoping someone on here can help me, perhaps who work in council offices. A few months ago a public bin (litter and dog waste) was placed by the council directly in front of my house. I have tried researching briefly but can’t find the answer I need. What regulations are there for the placement of these bins? Should the people living directly opposite (within direct view when looking out of window) been consulted?

I love where I live because I am not overlooked as we have a lovely green in front, which is now obscured by this bin. My next door neighbour had her house on the market and has now taken it down. Every person who viewed the house commented on the bin.

when it’s windy if the bin is full the litter ends up all over my front garden.

I will attach a photo. I was thinking king of writing to council with a FOI request to find out what consultation was carried out.

Thanks in advance.

How big is the bin?

it doesnt look that close though

mrsbyers · 10/07/2023 09:35

Your neighbour couldn’t have taken it down because of the bin more likely due to market slow down , the bin looks fine to me and it’s over the road ?

leafinthewind · 10/07/2023 09:35

Is it across the road from your house? So maybe 6m from your door if your door is on the street, or 10m if you have a front yard?

Have tried, so has my neighbour. They’re ignoring us now.

That bin is no way 4foot wide , this has to be a wind up ?

CuriousGeorge80 · 10/07/2023 09:36

I don’t think you can argue against a bin that far from your house, sorry OP. If there was a rule preventing that they couldn’t be on many pavements across the country!

Seeline · 10/07/2023 09:36

Councils have a lot of powers to do many minor works without requiring any consultation or needing consents/permissions.
The bin could even have been provided by a local Town or Parish Council rather than your local authority.
In the first instance I would speak to your local Councillors (Town/Parish, District/Borough, and County) to see if any of them can help with information as to which authority has provided it and whether a better location can be found.

Footinturf · 10/07/2023 09:37

The bin looks to be across the street, I don't see the issue.

Verite1 · 10/07/2023 09:37

Is that picture the view from your window? If so, it’s hardly directly in front of your house is it?

Wicksytricksy · 10/07/2023 09:37

Better than a load of dog shit left on the street though isn't it?

Seeline · 10/07/2023 09:39

Oh - I assumed that you meant the bin was adjacent to your front boundary!
It's hardly obscuring your view.
I don't think you'll get far trying to get that moved.

helpfulperson · 10/07/2023 09:39

Councils really can't win can they? Would you prefer people just dropped their litter on the ground?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 10/07/2023 09:39

All sympathy disappeared upon seeing the bin. That wouldn't be s problem

notsayingmuch · 10/07/2023 09:40

In a few weeks' time you won't even notice that bin. It looks like everywhere else in the country. A bit of grass, some trees and a litter bin. I thought you were going to say that it was a dog poo bin right against your patio, which would be unpleasant because you can always smell those bins when you get too close.

ElFupacabra · 10/07/2023 09:40

I was expecting a lamppost mounted waste basket type bin a foot outside your window completely obstructing your view… this is pathetic tbh.

Your view is not obstructed by that bin, what you mean is you don’t like looking at it. The council will have identified a need for said bin being there, it’s clearly over a road at the very least. It is a covered bin so flying waste in winds will likely be minimal. Smells, well, my own wheely bin is literally butted up to our bay window and I can’t smell it sat in the window seat.

You’re being ridiculous.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 10/07/2023 09:41

I couldn't get worked up about that to be honest.

JohnnysSoLongAtTheFair · 10/07/2023 09:41

Joke thread, surely.

Not near any houses and it’s not a dog shit bin anyway.

TheChosenTwo · 10/07/2023 09:41

So you’re saying that your neighbour has potentially lost house sales because of that bin over the road?
I had sympathy before seeing the photo!! Sorry, it doesn’t look like it’s especially close to your house 😂

TheBellsToll · 10/07/2023 09:43

It’s a standard sized bin and it’s not even close! You’re being daft.

Seeing that, you're being dramatic. I was expecting the bin to be massive and directly in front of your house.
