How far do public waste and dog poo bins need to be from house

Hi,

I’m hoping someone on here can help me, perhaps who work in council offices. A few months ago a public bin (litter and dog waste) was placed by the council directly in front of my house. I have tried researching briefly but can’t find the answer I need. What regulations are there for the placement of these bins? Should the people living directly opposite (within direct view when looking out of window) been consulted?

I love where I live because I am not overlooked as we have a lovely green in front, which is now obscured by this bin. My next door neighbour had her house on the market and has now taken it down. Every person who viewed the house commented on the bin.

when it’s windy if the bin is full the litter ends up all over my front garden.

I will attach a photo. I was thinking king of writing to council with a FOI request to find out what consultation was carried out.

Thanks in advance.

It isn’t a public park.

It isn't an extension of your garden.

JohnnysSoLongAtTheFair · 10/07/2023 10:53

OP, why won’t you answer my question about whether this is a designated dog waste bin or not?

Sorry I hadn’t seen it. It’s a litter and dog waste bin

It isn't a poo bin, it is for general waste. OP has scribbled out the council name, but poo pins have different designs and are separate from general waste bins on public open spaces.

OP merely claimed there is a dog poo bin right in front of her house for dramatic effect.

GiveOverRover · 10/07/2023 10:57

Even being incredibly empathetic to your plight, that bin is not obscuring your view of the park, and I hate to say it but if your neighbour had no offers on her house, again, nothing to do with the bin.

There is no requirement for the council to hold a consultation proceedure every time they want to place an item of standard street furniture. The bin will have been added because there will be a local specification regarding how many bins and where, and that's where one was needed.

Regarding the council ignoring you, you have now become "one of those" complaints, don't waste your time and energy, it's miles away from your house and you haven't got a leg to stand on. There are loads of other things you can focus on out the front of your house instead, like people doing three point turns where you don't like them doing it, leaves where you don't like them, or people walking past when you've never seen them before. Surely the irresponsible dog owners who hang their bags of dog poo in bushes instead of putting it in a nearby bin...

Bins in our area are generally dual use, especially where they are near grass areas that dogs are more like to use, they do state on them that dog waste is permitted. They look very similar to the ops

No I didn’t. I said it was a litter and dog poo bin. Why are you fabricating comments?

Yes, that was my assumption but I thought the OP should have a chance to say otherwise. Now she’s answered we can be sure that you’re right and it’s not a dog poo bin.

So the three references to “dog waste” and “poo” in the thread title, the OP and the OP’s username are a give away that she’s just being dramatic, as you say.

I also don’t believe that rubbish blows into her garden from the bin.

What is it if it's not a public park?

It's a green space. Its not deemed important enough to be designated a park. Its most likely a piece of land which wasn't built on at the time to improve the general feel of the estate being built. They're quite common in larger housing developments which throw the term executive housing around.

CableTidy · 10/07/2023 11:11

I kinda hope they put a nice big grit bin beside it. Sorry OP but I think you're being really precious on this

It’s definitely not an ‘executive housing estate!’ It’s 40 years old ish and we live in a modest 3 bed. With a nice view and big back garden.

If you don't want litter blowing around, ask the council if they'll replace it with a big belly bin.

finewelshcheese · 10/07/2023 11:14

I think it's a stretch to say it's obscuring your view 😂

That said, I can understand your frustration if it is getting full and blowing litter on your garden. The only thing I can suggest is reporting it to the council when it's getting close to full, our local council are pretty responsive and will send someone to empty overflowing bins very quickly. Is it possible squirrels and birds are pulling litter out?

GoldDuster · 10/07/2023 11:23

If the litter is blowing out you're could ask for something with a lid?

I would suggest you save your complaints to the council for when they fail to empty the bin and it is overflowing and counter productive. However, now that you have clearly p*ssed them off by complaining - unjustifiably it would appear from the photos - about the mere existence of the bin, don't be surprised that they'll have your cards marked as a whinger whom they won't prioritise.
Poor councils can't win! People moan there's not enough litter/dog poo bins. They put more out and the nimbys complain about where they are sited.

When I read your original post I thought they'd attached a bin to a pole right outside your pavement fronting house - not across the road in a field!! YABU

Smokeahontas · 10/07/2023 11:35

Behave.

tigger1001 · 10/07/2023 11:40

Sorry, I don't really see the problem. Having bins available is a good thing and will cut down the amount of rubbish just being dropped.

WaitingForNothingGood · 10/07/2023 11:47

It's like posters are competing to give the most sarcastic reply then can. It's pathetic. I can see why the bin wouldn't bother people but it's not at all unreasonable to not like it. I wouldn't! Everyone is ignoring the fact the OP said the bin was "directly opposite" (her house) in her OP.

It is possible to disagree with an OP and not be snide about it.

wonkylegs · 10/07/2023 11:50

@sleepyscientist oh I completely agree but people don't and a small number of dog owners spoil it for everyone else.
I don't own a dog or any pets for that matter

Thanks. Thankfully I have thick skin so small minded idiots are not really bothering me.

Why is it small minded to disagree with your attitude? Or small minded to think that you’re massively exaggerating about the nuisance?

I am in the same position as you op. The slamming of the bin makes me want to saw it off and chuck it in the road.
