How far do public waste and dog poo bins need to be from house

Hi,

I’m hoping someone on here can help me, perhaps who work in council offices. A few months ago a public bin (litter and dog waste) was placed by the council directly in front of my house. I have tried researching briefly but can’t find the answer I need. What regulations are there for the placement of these bins? Should the people living directly opposite (within direct view when looking out of window) been consulted?

I love where I live because I am not overlooked as we have a lovely green in front, which is now obscured by this bin. My next door neighbour had her house on the market and has now taken it down. Every person who viewed the house commented on the bin.

when it’s windy if the bin is full the litter ends up all over my front garden.

I will attach a photo. I was thinking king of writing to council with a FOI request to find out what consultation was carried out.

Thanks in advance.

If you dislike a normal sight in a public area then don't chose to live next to a public area.

The council are trying to maintain the area for everyone, not just make it pretty for you.

If you think I'm a troll, look at my last post. I have two of those bins in view of my house! They were put there as neighbours complained about dropped litter. We are all happy with them!

I can’t see any troll comments. Just people who don’t agree with you.

Why do the thread title, your name and your opening post refer to dog waste? That does not look like a dog waste bin. Does it say on it that it’s for dog waste?

Stinkypoobin · 10/07/2023 09:46

I’ve spoken to my neighbour and she hates it as much as me. All the viewing commented on it so it must have some impact.

Yeah, but no. Nobody in the world goes to view a house and is put off because there's a perfectly normally bin on some green space over the road. They are literally everywhere. Most urban streets have one. Nobody is commenting on this at a viewing. Nobody.

Seeline · 10/07/2023 10:06

If you complain enough, the Council might decide to fence in the green area to shield your delicate eyes from the awful bin.....

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:07

The only one who seems like a troll is the OP because this is such a farcical post and the actual story is nothing like her title and post.

DataNotLore · 10/07/2023 09:58

The definition of "troll" is not anybody who doesn't agree with you.

Honestly, unless you're prepared to personally litter pick the area you really can't complain about what is a perfectly nice suburban view.

I get lots of litter from that bin blown on to my garden occasionally. Why should o pick it up

OP posts:
Willmafrockfit · 10/07/2023 10:08

we also get litter blown from the street

Sirzy · 10/07/2023 10:08

How do you get lots of litter blowing from an enclosed bin like that?

Wexone · 10/07/2023 10:09

Sorry but you are being a bit ridiculous now. I have a poo bin right outside my gate, it doesn't bother me at all. The council are very good at emptying it every day, even at weekends. It only annoys me when lazy feckers use it as a litter bin and try to squeeze pizza boxes into it then the crows attack them scattering rubbish all over the place

Loverofoxbowlakes · 10/07/2023 10:09

I have one exactly like this over the road from my house op. This time last year my neighbour had 38 viewings of her house and 18 offers (seriously, it was CRAZY), not one mentioned the bin. If anything I prefer ours to a pile of stinky poo bags (or worse, poo bags hanging from branches, disgusting)

YABVVVU. Your neighbours house didn't sell because it's priced too high. That's always the case, never mind in a cost of living crisis with rising mortgage rates.

Amispringy · 10/07/2023 10:09

How absolutely utterly ridiculous

Willmafrockfit · 10/07/2023 10:10

i imagine people are struggling to get mortgages due to the high rates currently. a bin wouldnt put people off generally.

wonkylegs · 10/07/2023 10:10

@Stinkypoobin you would not be unreasonable to ask that it's regularly emptied and that it's not overflowing however the photo you show is classic NIMBYISM with regards to placement.
It's not 'spoiling' your view or right outside your house - it's a fairly innocuous piece of street furniture, located on a green over the road, that you look over. How far away do you think is reasonable?
I presume you prefer that there is an appropriate bin for dog waste disposal or would you prefer to dodge shit on the pavement outside your house or have poo bags hanging from the trees on the green (that's a favourite at the reservoirs where I live where no dog poo bins are provided)

Seeline · 10/07/2023 10:10

I get loads of litter blown into my garden from a bus stop about 50m up the road. I'd love a bin provided there.
Who do you think picks up all the coffee cups, McDonald's packaging and crisp packets? It's just a by-product of living in a public street.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/07/2023 10:10

So your complaint is really that lazy idiots drop litter.

Again... a downside of living next to a public area. Taking away a bin won't make people drop less litter.

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:11

Stinkypoobin · 10/07/2023 10:07

Surely logic dictates you would have more little blown around if there was no bin?

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:12

Love how the photo shows an empty bin too!

RoomOfRequirement · 10/07/2023 10:12

This is the funniest thread. This isn't something that would even cross the mind of a normal adult as an issue. Because we have real problems and understand we don't own part of a park across the street from our house?!

Hilarious. Recommend growing up OP and moving to the real world.

No one is trolling you because they don’t agree with you. I would inbox but “get some therapy” probably isn’t the advice you’re looking for.

FWIW 5m is the usually recommended distance for public waste bins to be placed near a building but this is usually from an insurance / health and safety point of view and it’s not legislative, it’s recommended. Your view doesn’t really concern the council when it comes to keeping the place tidy.

malmi · 10/07/2023 10:14

You say there was a view of a lovely green before it was obscured by the giant bin. We only have your word for it though as your photo only shows the bin which obscures the green as you say. Maybe you could go and take a photo of this green so we can see what it looks like and then people will be more sympathetic to your case?

It’s not your rubbish but it is your street.

I pick rubbish up from my road, it’s annoying. People chucks bottles of piss, McDonald’s, laughing gas canisters. All sorts. I pick it up because it looks shit, could cause wildlife issues and rubbish breeds rubbish.

AppleKatie · 10/07/2023 10:14

I’d be delighted and occasionally use it as an overflow bin especially if I could work out the emptying schedule and I knew the council were coming imminently to empty it. But perhaps I’m an arsehole. 😂

QuestionableMouse · 10/07/2023 10:14

You're lucky - this is my view currently!

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:12

That’s because all the rubbish had blown out of the bin into her garden

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 10/07/2023 10:15

How far away in metres (or feet if that is the way you think) is the bin from your front door/ front fence? The photo looks like it is across the road and so not directly outside.

Then Google NIMBY and realise that wherever the council put the bin it would be in someone sight line and you are being very precious. If it gets over full / not being emptied regularly then you have grounds to contact the council, but not just for being there.
