How far do public waste and dog poo bins need to be from house

Hi,

I’m hoping someone on here can help me, perhaps who work in council offices. A few months ago a public bin (litter and dog waste) was placed by the council directly in front of my house. I have tried researching briefly but can’t find the answer I need. What regulations are there for the placement of these bins? Should the people living directly opposite (within direct view when looking out of window) been consulted?

I love where I live because I am not overlooked as we have a lovely green in front, which is now obscured by this bin. My next door neighbour had her house on the market and has now taken it down. Every person who viewed the house commented on the bin.

when it’s windy if the bin is full the litter ends up all over my front garden.

I will attach a photo. I was thinking king of writing to council with a FOI request to find out what consultation was carried out.

Thanks in advance.

I am really struggling to see why a bin across the road is an issue.

surely it’s good as it means people will use the bin not just drop their rubbish.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/07/2023 09:44

I can see two bins like that from my window.

The only comments are when they aren't emptied as then rubbish blows around.

Its far better than dropped litter everywhere!

Is that picture the view from your window? If so, it’s hardly directly in front of your house is it?

Yeah it is.

Your neighbour couldn’t have taken it down because of the bin more likely due to market slow down , the bin looks fine to me and it’s over the road ?

I’ve spoken to my neighbour and she hates it as much as me. All the viewing commented on it so it must have some impact.

I have a tiny bit of sympathy as I think it is the kind of thing I'd fixate on if it happened to me and there had been no littering problems before . But I hope I'd also know I was being a bid dramatic and hope I'd just get used to it. I don't think it is the reason the house sale fell through.

There were no offers for the sale to fall through unfortunately

LOL was gearing up for a bright red smelly dog waste bin at your front gate (which I’d be livid about)?! Op please get serious…..better than littering! It’s hardly near your house or a big eyesore.

BonnieGlasses · 10/07/2023 09:47

I used to work for a council. They can put their bins wherever they want, but please do complain, you'll give someone like me a good laugh.

That bin is no way 4foot wide , this has to be a wind up ?

4 ft high.

😂

Was expecting it to be on the pavement in front of your front garden wall.

This is ridiculous

ButterCrackers · 10/07/2023 09:50

Rubbish blowing into your garden is unacceptable. Ask them to move the bin. It sounds like more bins are needed or a more frequent emptying schedule.

Simonjt · 10/07/2023 09:50

So the bin is in view of your house, it isn’t actually near it at all, if someone is so petty they wouldn’t buy a house where a bin is visible from the property, they’re going to spend a very very longtime finding somewhere to buy.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/07/2023 09:50

🙄I was expecting it to be right outside your door.

FuppingEll · 10/07/2023 09:52

I was like ooh, what kind of bins do they have in the UK that would obscure someones view of the green? I thought you guys had massive dumpster type bins or something. I was very disappointed when I saw the photo of a small bin obscuring nothing.

DataNotLore · 10/07/2023 09:55

So, you have a view of a well maintained park with an appropriately styled bin to help it stay that way.

I thought you meant it was on the pavement right outside your house. It looks fine there I don’t see the issue.

Exactly. I would love to live somewhere with a view like that!

Same! Mine is currently of a massive pile of rubble!

The definition of "troll" is not anybody who doesn't agree with you.

Honestly, unless you're prepared to personally litter pick the area you really can't complain about what is a perfectly nice suburban view.

This! I went back to read the “troll comments” as I thought I’d missed them. People are just disagreeing with you which doesn’t mean they’re a troll.

PeachesOnTheBeaches · 10/07/2023 10:02

YABU. It’s just a bin Confused And it’s far enough away from your house.

So yeah, of course the council are now ignoring you.

fyn · 10/07/2023 10:03

There are no regulations, the only regulations related to play areas and distance from bins to play equipment. That bin is also nowhere near your house.

WillyLows · 10/07/2023 10:03

Not a troll just don't think you're being reasonable.

The bin has to go somewhere? For every one person that moans the bin is placed outside their house, 3 would moan there's no bin at all. Honestly, it really doesn't look that bad. And it's across the road anyway? This doesn't seem like an issue to me.

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:04

Stinkypoobin · 10/07/2023 09:33

Omg you're being utterly ridiculous. The bin is hardly on the pavement under your window.
What a nimby post. You don't own a view of the park. Would you prefer to see rubbish all over it??
