Please make it stop!

My husband and I went out to dinner.
Our friends invited my husband and me to dinner.

It's not rocket science.

As long as I got food I wouldn't be too bothered 😬😬😬.

Grin

I don’t know where it’s come from, TBH.

I do enjoy a well-placed ‘himself’, ‘herself’, ‘yourself’ from an Irish person, though.

Missedmytoe · 07/07/2023 22:10

Had a call from a company recently and during the conversation the sales rep said, "So, if yourself would like to place an order..."

StayAnonn · 07/07/2023 22:10

I am constantly baffled at the amount of emails and letters I read (in my job and in random emails from other companies) that refer to 'myself'. I've even read it in company wide comms from the so called expert comms team. Also heard it said out loud in several work speeches and meetings.

Your thread title hurt my eyes.

Had an email today from a recruitment agency which said 'I just wanted to reach out to yourself' and then 'i'd love to have a quick chat with youself'.
No thanks.

Eveninginparis · 07/07/2023 22:12

Well, I myself personally speaking think that anyone who splits an infinitive should be boiled in oil....

“Please reach out to myself if you need any further help”

sevenbyseven · 07/07/2023 22:12

I ordered a takeaway for myself and my husband 😁

echt · 07/07/2023 22:15

“Please reach out to myself if you need any further help”

This was a daily occurrence at my school in Australia. From supposedly well-educated people. But then "send it to Fred or I" was just as common.

The number of emails. Amount of emails is incorrect.

Hello soul mates 👋

I’ve had copy come back from professional (and expensive) copywriters come back with ‘youself’ in. Shudder.

More like: Please reach out to myself if yourself need any further help

junebirthdaygirl · 07/07/2023 22:23

In lreland it comes from the lrish language. It's a direct translation so l'm afraid we seem to have spread it all over the world!!

It's not rocket science but it's obviously not something taught at school properly as it wouldn't keep happening.

noglow · 07/07/2023 22:25

So when should you use myself?

EdieLedwell · 07/07/2023 22:28

In Irish the direct translation is,myself and my husband.

So lots of Irish people say it that way.

Maybe it's the same in other languages and people are inadvertently directly translating from their native tongue?

Where does its use in sentences like “You did it to yourself”, “You yourself said it ” stand? Right? Wrong? Idiomatic?

It's a reflexive pronoun. So things like "I hurt myself", or Johnny's examples.

Yourself is the reflexive form. So you absolutely do something to yourself (and you wash yourself, feed yourself (as in put the food into your mouth) etc).

You said it yourself I’m less certain about. Idiomatic possibly? Certainly not as headache inducing as ‘contact myself if you have any questions’ etc.
