AIBU school uniform

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

Are what you've bought branded?

teacher45646 · 06/07/2023 19:05

Are they black?

Yellowlegobrick · 06/07/2023 19:06

And yes, are they plain black shorts?
Plain black shorts are easy & cheap to obtain so there's not really any excuse.

HalloVegBot · 06/07/2023 19:06

What are the ones you've got him?! Sounds very odd.

Soapboxqueen · 06/07/2023 19:06

Well surely you need to speak to the teacher and ask about it? 🤷🏻

TrueScrumptious · 06/07/2023 19:07

Are they branded?

Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 · 06/07/2023 19:07

Plain Black and not branded.

Yes, plain Black!

eh? But you’re the one that bought him the wrong shorts and won’t buy the right ones? You’re the reason he’s different right now. You can stand your ground if you want to but your child is the one who suffers the consequences of that, that’s not fair.

namechange55465 · 06/07/2023 19:08

What's wrong with them then? Can you post a picture?

Comedycook · 06/07/2023 19:09

So have you actually asked why they are objecting to them?

DappledThings · 06/07/2023 19:09

Well if it says plain black and you've bought plain black then you need to find put what they are objecting to. Pointless us trying to guess.

Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 · 06/07/2023 19:09

It’s really odd. They are plain Black sports shorts. That’s it…what is the problem!

PuttingDownRoots · 06/07/2023 19:09

Ask the teacher what exactly is wrong with them?

Seashor · 06/07/2023 19:09

You chose the school, you knew what the uniform was , so just buy it. I’m absolutely bloody sick of parents complaining about uniform like they don’t know about it. Ridiculous.

noglow · 06/07/2023 19:10

What are they saying isn't appropriate?

PaigeMatthews · 06/07/2023 19:10

This. they're either plain black shorts and the school are unreasonable. Or you bought nike shorts or the equivalent.

Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 · 06/07/2023 19:10

I don’t want to put what they have ‘labelled’ them in a group communication as it may give it away but they certainly aren’t what they have said.
They are plain black sports shorts, I just don’t get it!

SleepingStandingUp · 06/07/2023 19:11

So you sent your 4 yo to school with plain black shorts. Teachers keep telling him they're inappropriate. At no point have you actually spoken to school and asked what the issue is?

Yes, yabu

noglow · 06/07/2023 19:11

Have they called them hotpants?

LadyBird1973 · 06/07/2023 19:11

Iirc primary school kids don't have to wear uniform legally, irrespective of what the school policy is, so this is completely unenforceable.
Tell the school to stop hassling a 4 year old over a decision that the parent has made snd take up any issues with you directly. Going through the child is a form of bullying.

Are they saying they are too short?

Ijustdontknowwhattodo1018 · 06/07/2023 19:12
  1. You seem to have an issue with anyone who is ‘different’, this isn’t good!!!
  2. The shorts aren’t different, they are plain Black shorts.

melj1213 · 06/07/2023 19:12

Unless you've asked the school what the problem is then YABU to post a thread that literally nobody can answer ...

Either the shorts are within the set parameters or they aren't, if they aren't then the school needs to clarify why they are not suitable.

The only thing I can think of is that they are expecting shorts to be knee length loose fit and you've got your child some lycra short shorts that aren't appropriate for the activities they're doing because otherwise there is no problem as far as I can see
