AIBU school uniform

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

Those are really not PE shorts - poor boy

WimbledonPimms · 06/07/2023 20:17

They're shorts for under a skirt or over a Leotard. Sports shorts are 2 pairs for a fiver in Sainsbury's or currently 2.99 a pair in Aldi

I’m sick of people on Mums not only reading half the story!!
the point is that what I have provided is the uniform and the school have still found an issue!!!

And you won't tell us what the issue is! You've told us that the school have told you what the issue is, but you won't tell us as it's "too outing".
So you know what the problem is, but you're annoyed that we don't agree with you even though you're treating it like the secret ingredient in Coke!

Theunamedcat · 06/07/2023 20:24

They look like underwear like modesty shorts yoga knickers type thing

Teenangels · 06/07/2023 20:24

I can see their point they are not PE shorts.

The school have asked for plain black PE shorts not skin tight hot pants. Simple!

I don’t want to put what they have ‘labelled’ them in a group communication as it may give it away but they certainly aren’t what they have said.
They are plain black sports shorts, I just don’t get it!

Give what away?!? The answer?!?

eh?!??

KateReddy · 06/07/2023 20:25

I can see the school’s point.

AdoraBell · 06/07/2023 20:26

I would ask the school exactly which shorts they want.

Here is a photo of the shorts…

Not PE shorts. Look like they're meant to be tight so either that's not suitable for school wear, or they're larger so don't fit properly

CatchHimDerry · 06/07/2023 20:30

As per PP, they’re too tight.

In my middle school it wasn’t even shorts we had to wear these awful navy knickers 😂

But in upper they wouldn’t allow this, too tight

GoblinAeroplane · 06/07/2023 19:25

Are they leather?

Sorry but 😂

Badcaseofthelate30s · 06/07/2023 20:32

Most of the girls at my DCs school wear cycling shorts for PE but maybe it depends on the school....those do look quite short so could be that. The only person who can tell you is the teacher

The kids 4. And cycling shorts are normal in primary schools

SuchiRolls · 06/07/2023 20:35

We had this at my sons school as they prefer the striped black sports ones you get from most supermarkets. Unfortunately my son is in adult size clothing and very tall. Grown adults don’t like to wear PE school shorts 😆 His teacher kept saying to him he needed the plain striped ones so I had to go to her and point out they don’t do them in his size and he has plain black shorts on, what’s the problem 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s not the olympics, it’s just PE 🤦🏻‍♀️

They are like 2 inches past the crotch!

badluckorbadvibes · 06/07/2023 20:37

Are you just fishing for people to tell you they are girls shorts so you can point out that they are just shorts? Otherwise I can't really work out what going on. School have said these shorts are not what should be worn, so change them.

DappledThings · 06/07/2023 20:38

Yeah, those are not what they've asked for. I'm with the school.

SayHi · 06/07/2023 20:38

They look like tight shorts which are only allowed under baggier shorts.

If your DS likes the feel of them could you get some cheap PE shorts from Asda to put over the top.

FWIW you don’t need to pay out loads of money for plain black shorts as they’re not going to improve performance or look any better than ones from Asda or primark.

Enko · 06/07/2023 20:40

yups @namechange55465 nailed it.. 😂

OP buy some standard shorts for PE those are not what the school meant.
My guess is the school called them cycling shorts and you are proclaiming they are not.

JunipeJuniper · 06/07/2023 20:40

Clearly OP is being unreasonable but just piping up that an awful lot of kids at primary definitely do wear cycling shorts - just much longer ones. The loose ones are often enormous on those with a smaller build.

LadyPenelope68 · 06/07/2023 20:40

Those are cycling type shorts/yoga shorts/gymnastic shorts, they are NOT what are classed as PE shorts. Buy the proper shorts and stop moaning.

Justplainsadmad · 06/07/2023 20:42

Very short and very tight. I can see why they aren't suitable. 🤷

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 06/07/2023 20:43

You need to contact the school directly and I'd do this tomorrow.

Bootsandbooks · 06/07/2023 20:43

Those look completely inappropriate for school PE shorts; they should be loose fitting & cotton; not form fitting spandex.
