AIBU school uniform

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

Are they like bike shorts? Or the little tiny ones girls use for gymnastics/dance?

There must be something about the short for them to be commenting about it. Bog standard, plain ,black PE shorts would not raise an eyebrow.

No, they’re not confused. They comment every PE day. I make myself available every morning and afternoon, there has been plenty of opportunity for them to speak to me.

I have a vision of the OP holding a cardboard sign "available" and waving it at pick up time 😂

I hope you mean you went to see the teacher and ASK what the problem was? You are not expecting them to ignore the other 29 children (average size class) to run after you on the playground to discuss PE shorts?

wildfirewonder · 06/07/2023 19:32

I love a pointlessly cryptic thread

WimbledonPimms · 06/07/2023 19:32

When you've told them you're available to discuss it do they just ignore you?

I suspect they're too skimpy and whilst marketed as shorts would be more suitable for over a leotard or under a skirt.

Unless you tell us what they've been labelled as (it's really not outing 😂) no one can give advice or opinion.

SkankingWombat · 06/07/2023 19:32

If you're as awkward as this IRL, I can see why the teacher would send messages home via DC rather than speak to you directly...

I think the OP is well aware what is wrong, but they want to stay vague enough that people agree with them

Thinkbiglittleone · 06/07/2023 19:33

You do sound unreasonable (slightly ridiculous if I'm honest)

You talk about building building our children, but you are sending your own child into school, knowing they are going to get commented on and highlighted as incorrect uniform, but can't be bothered to find out why ?

Teachers are so busy, they won't want to be taking time to repeatedly tell your child they have incorrect uniform.

I also wouldn't be sending my child to a school where I claimed the teachers like to bully kids, bizarre.

Thinkbiglittleone · 06/07/2023 19:35

Also, if you can see the shorts and know the policy and don't know what the problem is, how are we supposed to?

Seeline · 06/07/2023 19:35

Unless you say what the school have said about the shirts, we can't say who is BU.

YABU by not telling us the full story!

I don't think we're meant to. I think we're meant to pile on about the vile, bullying teacher who's humiliating a small child weekly for their own pleasure and then pretending to the parent all is fine

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 06/07/2023 19:38

They're the teeny tiny ones that look like pants aren't they?

Mammyloveswine · 06/07/2023 19:40

Ffs ask to speak to the teacher at drop off/pick up and ask what is wrong with the shorts?

Do the children get themselves changed? Could your child keep putting in someone else's shorts by mistake?

Hankunamatata · 06/07/2023 19:41

Why not address this with the school instead of making it a whole conspiracy.

babbscrabbs · 06/07/2023 19:43

Comedycook · 06/07/2023 19:20

This is so easily solvable.

Hi miss X, can you explain what exactly is wrong with X's pe shorts?

Indeed.

Are they cycling shorts? Extra short, extra long, extra baggy?

Mind you I wore big green knickers to PE as a child and doubt anything is as offensive as those!

EatYourVegetables · 06/07/2023 19:44

This thread is hilarious. I still don’t know what is wrong with the shorts but I am sure the OP is definitely being unreasonable.

That gave me flash backs of secondary school and the blue PE pants they made us wear around the boys 😑

Pointless thread OP If your not going to share what the school have actually said about them!
Crystal ball is on the blink today!

Enko · 06/07/2023 19:48

@namechange55465 I agree 😀

KrisAkabusi · 06/07/2023 19:49

It's not just pointless, it's deliberately annoying as she's been told exactly what the problem is, but won't tell us!

CurlewKate · 06/07/2023 19:51

So when you asked his teacher what the problem is, what did she say?

arethereanyleftatall · 06/07/2023 19:51

Or just buy your kid the correct shorts and stop making teachers lives harder than they already are.
I'm a teacher. Pay - fine. Kids - fine. Paperwork - fine. Some parents - fottfsof and then fuck off some more.

VenusClapTrap · 06/07/2023 19:53

Op knows perfectly well what’s wrong with the shorts. She’s just being bloody-minded / trying to pick a fight with the school, but the one who’s suffering in all this is her dc.

Reminds me of a friend who refused to fork out for the logoed school jumper and sent her four year old in in a hand knitted affair. “It’s a blue jumper, isn’t it?” Poor kid.

EmeraldFox · 06/07/2023 19:54

Are they from the school uniform section? Are the other children in school PE uniform cotton shorts and your child in proper sports shorts, like rugby shorts that may be shorter? Not that that doesn't meet the 'black sports shorts' description!

LittleBearPad · 06/07/2023 19:56

Just buy the right shorts and move on
