AIBU school uniform

Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy new shorts?

The school uniform states plain Black shorts for PE but the teachers have been commenting on my child’s shorts and telling them they are not appropriate.
They are proper ‘sports’ shorts and not that it matters but they are not cheap, they’re good quality, good fit, they don’t fall down etc.
I just don’t see what the problem is and what infuriates me is that they keep telling a 4 year old rather than telling me why there is a problem…after all, it is me who is buying the uniform and not my child.

Also, are we not supposed to be building children up, not making them feel self conscious?

Because I've worked in schools for years and know it's what most little girls wear. To me, black cotton cycling shirts are completely appropriate and normal school PE attire. I doubt half the people commenting have been in a primary PE session this century.

I too have worked in primary school for years, as well as having two DC go through the system. I’ve never seen a primary age child wearing the type of shorts in the OPs picture!

MojoJojo71 · 08/07/2023 09:47

Is he very tall? I keep having a problem with DD’s school saying her PE shorts are too short but they are the same length as everyone else’s she just has longer legs!

I've read through all of the OPs posts twice now and no where is the Sex of her child indicated so why is everyone assuming that the OPs child is a boy being sent in wearing girls shorts?

I highlighted this earlier but people are still referring to the OPs DC as a boy for some reason 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pushmepullu · 08/07/2023 09:49

If they are tight perhaps OPs child can’t put them on/pull them up on their own and needs help.

Because it's easier to pick a sex and use it to refer to the child rather than follow OP's annoying hiding of that fact. Writing "they" is awkward so someone picked boy, others have copied their lead and OP has not come back to clarify.

I'm happy to buck the trend and say I think they would look weird on OP's daughter if she is a girl just as much as if he's a boy.

applepuff · 08/07/2023 10:13

They look OK but if I absolutely had to nitpick, they look a bit spandexy, like gymnastics or cycling shorts.

But anyway, nobody will agree with you if you're just playing Cryptic Clara. You're having a monologue / ranting to yourself OP. "My boss told me off for a top secret reason and it's not fair, I won't say why but I was definitely in the right!"

Muminthebluecoat · 08/07/2023 14:31

Why don't you just ask the teacher?

This is a bizarre post. Surely you'd just ask and then maybe a post about whether the reason they give is unreasonable or not but without asking no one will ever know if there unreasonable or not!

Jessica0508 · 08/07/2023 15:55

this is a bit of an odd one. Is your child definitely telling the truth for starters? As it seems odd the teachers aren’t approaching you about it. But if you’re worried your child is being made to feel odd I would have been down there like a bullet asking what the problem is! But thirdly, your child is 4 so technically school uniform isn’t compulsory until the age if 5 anyway… so ask them, but technically you don’t have to follow it, unless they’re inappropriate like hot pants or something.

Click to read the OP's posts. It is practically hotpants. It is short, tight, dance style shorts that are often also worn as modesty shorts under a skirt or dress.

My daughter was bullied by a teacher, but like all sneaky bullies, she was discreet, so nobody realised except my daughter and her friend. Not even me until after the event. This teacher, who I would gladly name and shame, as she had such a terrible effect on my daughters confidence (she also developed a tick). It took a long time for her to get over it.

Hermanfromguesswho · 08/07/2023 17:42

I knew as soon as I read your first post that you’d got your child cycling shorts/hot pants style shorts rather than PE shorts. Then I saw the picture 😂
They are not PE shorts. Yes they are black ‘sports shorts’ for sports such as gymnastics or dance but they are not uniform. You need the plain black football style shorts. They are very cheap in the supermarket. I’m sure you know this though!

So you sent your 4 yo to school with plain black shorts. Teachers keep telling him they're inappropriate. At no point have you actually spoken to school and asked what the issue is?

Yes, yabu

Why should she if school say they are nit right they should address the parent

Most schools have a set of rules you sign you agree too. Uniform is generally in there.

Manthide · 09/07/2023 07:29

Dd3 goes to a private school and I bought the sports skort from the uniform provider. I bought her waist size and she really liked them. First sports lesson her skort was half way up her thigh and everyone else's were at their knees! Of course being girls they all wanted hers. When she needed the next size a couple of years later she was very disappointed that they were like the other girls.
