I’m due a baby girl in September. I really like the name Sepora and think it’s quite unique. DH hates it! Am I being aibu here?

They have huge stores all over the world, and it's not discount stuff it's just a lot of (relatively mid to high end) brands under one roof.

Back to the op, no it's awful. What about Serafina? Or Sofia?

Sofia is too common and serafina sounds like an angel

If your DH hates it, he gets infinite vetos so it’s a non-starter.

she will also spend a lifetime with people thinking you named her after a makeup store.

also, Sephora is not a discount store. leaving that place with a tiny little bag will cost you $$$. They carry all the nicer lines of name-brand makeup under one storefront. They do have a store brand line that is cheaper, but that is not the draw.

Sunnyfeelgood · 06/07/2023 18:43

@Oysterbabe my best friend is called Balonz though! ;)

toodlesofoodles · 06/07/2023 18:44

Safura is lovely, much nicer sounding and spelling.

ThatFraggle · 06/07/2023 18:44

Sometimes names are 'unique' for a reason.

It doesn't mean you are the cleverest, quirkiest person in the world because you 'found' a name no one else has.

It just means people will label your child as the child of parents who are not very intelligent/chavvy.

Because to saddle a child with a name that will be viewed negatively is stupid.

You might feel that people SHOULD be open minded, and should think 'how original and quirky'.

But in real life you're just asking for a hard time.

PurpleChrayne · 06/07/2023 18:44

Tzipporah?

BoohooWoohoo · 06/07/2023 18:45

If you live in the UK then people will think that you misspelled the shop Sephora.
Sephora isn't a discount store by any stretch of the imagination.

Jongleterre · 06/07/2023 18:46

No.

Sephora is better but phonetically
Sep HOR a
Is not a good idea.

I just feel it’s quite unique, never come across anyone with the name Sepora but getting negative vibes here from everyone! I love it though!!

Where did you come across it? I agree it makes me think of the makeup brand. Sometimes "unique" isn't a good thing when it comes to a name! 🙈

Síofra is an Irish name (pronounced shee-fra)
Shiafra (pronounced she-a-fra)
Seafra (pronounced exactly as its spelled)
Or as someone else suggested Sofia
They'd be the only names in any way close that I would have heard.

evtheria · 06/07/2023 18:48

It makes me immediately think you've misspelt Sephora. And then I think it sounds like an 80s brand of female bar soap. However, I do think a lot of people will just think it's a name, and will never have heard of Sephora here in the UK.

Chersfrozenface · 06/07/2023 18:50

OP, if you want to mark the fact that your daughter's birthday is in September, you could use the Latin name Septima.

Or if she's late and born in October, Octavia.

There is a reason you haven't come across anyone with the name, it's horrible to saddle a child with it.

ManateeFair · 06/07/2023 17:04

Well it's very close to Sephora, a discount beauty brand.

Sephora's not a discount beauty brand - it's just a store that stocks a whole range of beauty brands under one roof. It's not discount stuff.

Agree that I would immediately think of Sephora if someone told me their child's name was Sepora though.

Not to miss the point entirely but so glad someone else’s reaction was “but Sephora isn’t a discount beauty brand?!”

Not a fan of Sepora.

PomegranateRose · 06/07/2023 18:59

Immediately sounds like you wanted to call her Sephora but thought you'd better tweak it slightly.

Perhaps that couldn't be further from the truth, but that's the impression it gives. I wouldn't.

What's wrong with normal, human names?

Wiki says its the Greek spelling of the name I know of as Zipporah - Moses wife in the bible. Great if you want a daughter whose friends will forever call her Zippy........ and ask her where George, Bungle, Geoffrey, Rod, Jane and Freddy are ha ha (well they would if were of my generation!)

Sopia is quite unique.

Sounds like a mould spore/fungus to me. Married to a scientist.

Ultimately, if you can get DH on board, then go for it. It is your baby and the name will always be second to the personality.

My nieces have all been given stripper names which I cringed at when hearing (think Destiny, Diamanté and Cyncere) but they have all just become such little characters that for whatever reason, the names are less awful as when you hear them you just think of their cute faces.

Alloveragain3 · 06/07/2023 19:19

Sorry OP, another no.

I straight away thought of Sephora.

My next thought was "soapy" or a cleansing product for some reason.

I also really dislike the "pore" sound in the middle.

Summerfun54321 · 06/07/2023 19:19

It sounds more like an illness or a condition rather than a name.

I don’t think it’s horrible, but your husband is really opposed to it, which is why I voted YABU. You need to agree on a name.

Mischance · 06/07/2023 19:20

I'm with 'im.

HermioneHerman · 06/07/2023 19:25

It reminds me of Sapporo, Japanese city and beer, which isn't probably most people's first thought but definitely puts me off the name I'm afraid.
