I’m due a baby girl in September. I really like the name Sepora and think it’s quite unique. DH hates it! Am I being aibu here?

I wouldn’t have associated it with the shop but it’s awful.

What does your Dh like?

honeylulu · 06/07/2023 21:05

It sounds like you meant Zipporah but didn't know how it was spelt. (I'm not sure I've spelt it right to be honest. )

Zipporah is a great name though. She was the wife of Moses I think.

clare, Sarah, Laura….meh!

I love the Biblical name Zipporah if that’s any good?

I've never heard that before, but I love it!! Assume "Zip" is the stressed syllable.

To OP, Sepora sounds like something medical. Makes me think of something nasty that wounds might do.

Whereas Zipporah sounds strong and confident and authoritative.
Wish I'd heard of it 20 years ago :)

caringcarer · 06/07/2023 21:09

Is it a made up name? I've never heard of it before.

OnePotPolly · 06/07/2023 21:10

What about sefora

No. That's no better.

Gladitsgladys · 06/07/2023 18:41

Sofia is too common and serafina sounds like an angel

Sophia is a lovely name and Seraphina is ok too. Both better than the first name.

Usertumster · 06/07/2023 21:13

@Gladitsgladys why a “unique” name? Why not a beautiful name that is easy to spell/pronounce?

”unique” names generally make me wince a bit (when they’re unique for the sake of it). Your child will be unique. She could have the most common girls name in the country and she’d still be unique. Please don’t give her a ridiculous name.

OnePotPolly · 06/07/2023 21:15

my best friend is called Balonz though! ;)

So is mine. Wonder if it's the same one?

Gladitsgladys · 06/07/2023 21:25

@OnePotPolly 😅😂

Is it a made up name? I've never heard of it before.

I've asked 3 times where she heard it or how she came to know it and she hasn't answered so I'm going to say yes 🤣

Meowandthen · 06/07/2023 21:41

It’s flipping awful. As bad as Cyncere as mentioned upthread.

All this “I want my child to be yooneeque” stuff is ridiculous. Everyone is different, focus on personality, and stop giving children made up words as names.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/07/2023 21:42

DS likes it, but he's the kind of person that calls his cuddly toys things like Command Barrier and Yum Bum so I'm not convinced about his judgement on such matters.

He now thinks Ooglie would be a great name, so maybe best to disregard his endorsement...

JayAlfredPrufrock · 06/07/2023 21:50

Your baby your choice.

Crack on.

Panteranoir · 06/07/2023 22:02

The trend for totally made up nonsense names drives me to distraction.

It's purely a reflection of the parents own ego (my DM'S was massive). No thought goes into whether it will sound good on a 50 year old and most of them sound ridiculous.

As someone with an unusual name, it's an absolute fucking pain. I spent my childhood fantasizing about changing it to jane or Kate or Emma. Something people could spell and actually pronounce.

And yes it looks like a misspelling of the make up shop too.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/07/2023 22:09

Poor child. Just don't!!!

OnePotPolly · 06/07/2023 22:10

OP, I think you can surmise from your thread that Sepora is a very unusual name.
And that it is not an attractive name, to many. That alone would put me off it.

It screams medical to some, and bacterial growth to others.
To some it might be an ointment for hives, or a disinfectant for your kitchen floor.
It really is not an attractive name.

However, some have suggested Zipporah, which I have never, ever heard before. but I really love it. It is many oceans better than Sepora.

I am assuming that the "Zipp" in Zipporah is the stressed syllable,

I love that, see? ZIPP oh rah. I love that name now.

See, my husband being Cornish, Our girls are Morwenna and Tamsin.

Even though we live in the NE. Whatever. If I'd known Zipporah existed I would have fought and won the battle.

OP. Do Zipporah. You will not regret it.

cushioncovers · 06/07/2023 22:17

Nope, sounds like a detergent to me.

user6482959 · 06/07/2023 22:18

I would also think it's the misspelling of the cosmetics shop Sephora. Sorry,

JMSA · 06/07/2023 22:19

I thought of Sephora too. Sorry!

OnePotPolly · 06/07/2023 22:21

More votes for Zipporah then.

SlightlyJaded · 06/07/2023 22:21

Made up names are shit

I get that people sometimes want an unusual name but there are enough beautiful and underused names out there without making up naff words. It doesn't even have a pretty sound to it.

MavisMcMinty · 06/07/2023 22:27

It doesn’t sound pretty, no. Any word beginning s-e-p just makes me think of sepsis/septic - also not pretty names, before OP gets ideas.

You’ll just make your “unique” choice of name into a talking point for the rest of your child’s life. Plenty of lovely names to choose from, or invent if you must.
