I’m due a baby girl in September. I really like the name Sepora and think it’s quite unique. DH hates it! Am I being aibu here?

sounds like a spot cream!

Staggersaurus · 06/07/2023 17:21

Regardless of it being a very “younique” name, your DH hates it and so YABU.

Coolhwip · 06/07/2023 17:22

So much Western imperialist ignorance on this thread.

Sepora and Sephora are variations of the Arabic name Safura:

Arabic (صفورة) form of the Hebrew name Zipporah - "bird". The name of the wife of Musa.

The name has been around for many hundreds of years.

OP, there are many women called Safura in the Muslim/Arab world, it’s a beautiful name.

So much unnecessary virtue signalling on this thread.🙄

Wrong place to ask OP. Anything that is not on the top 25 or foreign is automatically a yabu.

It takes seconds to look it up and show that it’s a real name and has an actual meaning. So what that it’s similar to a shop as if shops have never had names that people didn’t already have.

Perhaps find a compromise of sorts, that you can both live with. My oldest’s (DS8) first name is a compromise and I still preferred the name I wanted than what he has due to how common it is. He has never been in a class where someone didn’t have his name, and it has caused confusion, yet the name I wanted for him that was a well-known, easy to say name and less popular, he has never encountered at all.

CoalCraft · 06/07/2023 17:45

Well of your DH hates it it's a bit of a non-starter.

It may well be a lovely name in isolation. But culture plays a huge part.

Kara is a name used in the West, but it means 'shit' in Arabic, so wouldn't necessarily be used in countries that speak Arabic, despite being a lovely name in the West. It is all relative and mumsnet is a predominantly western platform.

We dont all have to love every name because somewhere int he world people like it. We are all a product of our own culture.

Poppyblush · 06/07/2023 17:46

Too much like the shop…

Safura isn’t just like a make up shop though, is it?

Sewingdufus · 06/07/2023 17:49

I would assume it was a spelling error for Sephora. Not for me, sorry.

KrisAkabusi · 06/07/2023 17:50

Yes, but she wants to call her Sepora, which sounds completely different!

PandaPacer · 06/07/2023 17:52

It's a bogan name.

Tomatina · 06/07/2023 17:55

People will assume it's a misspelling of Sephora the shop. It also sounds like it could be a disease - something like sepsis. So that's a hard no.

How many are called Sepora though ?

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 06/07/2023 17:55

There is a baby name forum you know...

Sauvblanctime · 06/07/2023 17:56

Absolutely no

DaisyDonuts · 06/07/2023 18:05

It sounds like someone mispronouncing sephora. Also my first reaction was septic pores, don’t ask me why 🙈

Googling Sepora just brought up this thread.
I can't see it as a traditional Arabic name.

I think Safura is gorgeous though.

musicforthesoul · 06/07/2023 18:24

If your DH hates it then it's a non starter anyway. You need a name you both like.

xsquared · 06/07/2023 18:24

Someone's already beaten me to it, but how about the biblical name Zipporah instead?

Gladitsgladys · 06/07/2023 18:38

I just feel it’s quite unique, never come across anyone with the name Sepora but getting negative vibes here from everyone! I love it though!!

An online discount beauty brand. Or you could have Maybeline, or Lotus or Lakme or Lush or L'oreal whichever you think goes with the surname?

They have huge stores all over the world, and it's not discount stuff it's just a lot of (relatively mid to high end) brands under one roof.

Back to the op, no it's awful. What about Serafina? Or Sofia?

Oysterbabe · 06/07/2023 18:40

I've never come across anyone with the name balonz, doesn't make it a good name.

Pinkflamingopants · 06/07/2023 18:41

In what world is Sephora a discount beauty brand? Take me there please. Last time I went I spent my life savings.
