To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

1000 replies

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

There’s an often spouted myth that red meat is carcinogenic.
In truth there’s no research that can tell you that, and it would be highly unlikely that a food humans have eaten for thousands of years is going to kill us. The studies that result in the scaremongering don’t differentiate between highly processed meat and fresh meat, nor do they limit intake of things like bread, chips, biscuits, cakes etc , so it’s impossible to extrapolate any meaningful data from it.

There is interesting research into carnivore diets, with growing evidence that autoimmune diseases (and other chronic conditions) can be reversed by only eating meat. I’m not aware of research that extends to more than 6 months, but I know that many people have vastly improved their health by following this diet - many of them ex vegans (there’s a subreddit that regularly shares and analyses research on this).

IIRC humans evolved the way we did because we ate meat. We’re not herbivores, and there are many people who could not live healthy lives eating only plant foods. Obviously there are some that can, but it would be a mistake to assume that humans are all the same.
(Every year BIL decides he’s vegan, he puts a hell of a lot of effort into balancing proteins, fats etc, so that he can sustain it, he takes good quality supplements - yet every time he ends up weak and gaunt, recovers, then tries again, determined to make it work - it just doesn’t work for him.)

If you’re going to put something in your mouth, then it’s up to you to educate yourself.

So your going to continue to act defensive, hostile and fail to back up your claim any scientific evidence.

It seems a little odd you wont answer me, when you seem so vested other peoples eating habits but then refuse to assist them.

RoyalGala · 06/07/2023 20:08

Pinklagoon · 06/07/2023 20:00

Let me just remind you of your previous post.

"If you’re educated enough, you’ll actually recognise it’s the meat eaters stereotype, defensive, hostile, lacks any scientific evidence to many of the claims made"

So here you are doing exactly what you accuse others of doing, how strange 🤔

Actually I have answered questions that have been thrown at me.

Because if you want to really know, you’d find that info for yourself, not expect others to do the work for you.

Cancer exists and kills millions, meat is cancer causing.

Sorry I think every one on this thread blinked and missed it. I asked you to provide me a list of foods you were referring to that are classes as a carcinogenic.

It's not going to be more destructive, is it? That's just bollocks.

I guess people who eat meat never eat avacados?

Of course it can be more destructive. Acres of crops with very few weeds, hedgerows ripped out, fewer insects and birds. No comparison to a field of sheep or cows and the healthy soil, with insects, bird species, soil rich with mycelium.
Even moorland has far more biodiversity than arable farms, and has done more for conservation in the last 10+ years than arable farming!
Unless we change our ways and stop the destruction and start protecting biodiversity (and a big part of that is grazing animals), we lose more insect, lose more bees, and humans are screwed. The loss of insects stands to be catastrophic to the planet.

No one has said that meat eaters don’t eat avocados.

We went through this several pages ago.

Industrial animal agriculture is always worse for the environment than industrial arable agriculture, partially because up to 40% of crops grown are for animal feed.

Industrial arable agriculture is mostly worse for the environment than low intensity / regenerative animal agriculture but low intensity animal agriculture is not the norm and it cannot be the norm as long as people insist on consuming meat every day.

The change that is required is for the majority of the population to reduce their meat consumption.

And you clearly didn’t read properly, I answered questions but I’m not willing to provide all the information because you simply want someone to do it for you. Oh and I have provided enough links and evidence throughout this entire thread.

Wrong wrong wrong!

"Fresh white meat, such as chicken and fish, is not linked to an increased risk of cancer."

https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/diet-and-cancer/does-eating-processed-and-red-meat-cause-cancer

But meat eaters don’t just eat fish and chicken 🫣

Sigh. I feel like this thread would have gone so much better if the OP had said "reduce" instead of give up. Unless I have misread, many posters would be ok with reducing meat. Just like most people would never give up their cars, but would be ok with walking to the shops rather than driving.

Reducing meat would be enough. No one needs to give up. No one will give up, really.

BeethovenNinth · 06/07/2023 20:19

Because it’s nutrient dense, I buy local and I don’t believe for one minute that meat replacements are remotely healthful. I also think children require it to grow properly. I believe a lack of animal fat and proteins and especially fish is one reason why levels of IQ are dropping in the UK

Well, many will have no choice when the global food system starts to collapse, but that's another matter entirely.

Do you see what you said (in bold) you claimed meat eaters, I am a meat eater so you were wrong.

Wrong wrong wrong and your last post is wrong again.

Animals in the wild aren’t bred specifically to live in their own filth, crammed in with many others, being pumped with growth hormones to the point that they can’t move properly, in a space so cramped that when they have babies they end up crushing some of them to death and if they don’t they have to look on helplessly and in distress whilst they get separated from their babies.

Well, where I live farm animals generally don't live like that. What about when a wild animal sees it babies being killed by predators, which happens all the time. Do you think they enjoy that?

Wild animals don’t get open wounds that get infected from all the feces they’re forced to live in, they don’t suffer illnesses from ammonia exposure from all the piss they have to live in, they don’t get broiled alive, they don’t get stunned with a bolt gun - repeatedly sometimes because it doesn’t work the first time, and then being killed while the rest are witnessing and some of them try to escape even in panic while it’s happening to the others. And on and on, the list gets worse.

Do you think when a herd of wild animals are being chased by lions etc. they don't feel fear? Do you think they don't panic? Do you think animals being torn apart while still alive is a better death than being stunned with a bolt gun? Do you think that when a rabbit is taken by a bird of prey that it enjoys the experience?

You really are incredibly naive if you think life for wild animals is all gamboling in the fields, getting on together, and dying of old age!!!! It's survival of the fittest out there, always has been, always will be.
