To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Protein is my plain and simple answer. I cannot get enough protein without eating meat

Well you could. You absolutely could. One hundred percent definitely could. But hey ho.

Surely it’s a basic understanding that meat is not the only source of protein 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thatboymum · 06/07/2023 19:34

Because it tastes nicer than kid on meat and a small bit is because it’s habit now

schloss · 06/07/2023 19:36

"we know it is better for the environment"

That is just the stock answer to push a certain point of view and expect others to agree with it.

WedTheBed · 06/07/2023 19:36

Because I enjoy it. I don’t understand how vegetarians/vegans don’t see the problem in asking someone to give up something they enjoy and sticking a list of reasons why someone should feel guilty about it.

Unfortunately if you cant eat most of the commonly offered replacements, it kinda is.

Pinklagoon · 06/07/2023 19:39

So how many meat eater have all the vegetarians and vegans converted to their cause on this thread then?

Otherwise this entire thread is about them stroking their fragile egos and spouting nonsensical codswallop. 😂

Who said that poster couldn’t? It was a blanket statement.

Nobody has to give it up, but vegans have every right to defend their cause. It does harm other beings, meat comes from living beings

The idea that vegans shouldn't talk about animal welfare and climate change because it annoys you is silly

This. Exactly this.

I was vegan for three years and thought I was eating really well. Cooked from scratch, did not rely on processed meat replacements. I ended up turning into a zombie and was so exhausted I would fall asleep multiple times during the day.

So to be told I was just "doing it wrong" is really jarring. I did my best and it wasn't enough. No diet where you have to supplement to try to feel normal is sustainable.

So why are vegans and vegetarians infesting this thread? It was quite obviously started by the OP who was asking meat eaters a question.

So you all flooded in to preach, you may have every right to preach but you were not initially invited 🤔

No one is trying to convert anyone, I’m quite happy not putting carcinogenic food in my mouth.

If you think the points raised were codswallop, maybe take that up with the scientists who have evidence of the points raised 😉

paulmccartneysbagel · 06/07/2023 19:47

@BlinkAndYouMissedMe it's not my truth. The truth for me is that I tried for three years and was left feeling ill. Cooked from scratch most nights, didn't rely on processed shit.

I'm glad it is working for you but it didn't work for me.

Care to clarify what carcinogenic foods you are explicitly identifying?

I shall let you do the research on that one.

Oh so you don't know then, want me to give you more time to google it 😂

paulmccartneysbagel · 06/07/2023 19:51

@Pinklagoon there are a lot of quacks online (like Dr Greger) who claim that meat and dairy are carcinogens and extremely unhealthy. There is one claim that eating an egg is comparable to smoking 5 cigarettes 😂😂😂

DungareesAndTrombones · 06/07/2023 19:52

I eat meat because I like it and I am happy to support our local farmers. I eat lots of veggie things too so have a nice balance. I love farmers and farming and farming programmes and I also love a bacon butty. Yum.

Pinklagoon · 06/07/2023 19:53

@paulmccartneysbagel Yep you can usually spot them a mile off they literally inhabit threads like this 24/7.

Of course I know, why would I have made that claim. If you can use a computer, you are able to Google the information.

It’s amazing how MN users know more than scientists who have spent time researching it themselves, I guess it’s better to be in denial 🤔

Let me just remind you of your previous post.

"If you’re educated enough, you’ll actually recognise it’s the meat eaters stereotype, defensive, hostile, lacks any scientific evidence to many of the claims made"

So here you are doing exactly what you accuse others of doing, how strange 🤔

If you’re going to put something in your mouth, then it’s up to you to educate yourself.
