To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive.

We do not know that any of that is true. Eating less meat and eating better quality meat is probably better all round.

DustyLee123 · 04/07/2023 21:21

Because I don’t like the alternative and I want the protein/iron.

StylishM · 04/07/2023 21:22

It's tasty and versatile
In its pure form it's a healthy source of protein that's not a UPF. Nearly all vegan 'subs' are UPF and full of shit
Animal welfare is subjective - it's not high on my priority list

OrwellianTimes · 04/07/2023 21:16

Couldn’t if I wanted to. IBS won’t let me eat dairy, beans, nuts, legumes, soy, quorum, seeds or half the vegetables. Beef, fish and chicken are the only proteins I can eat.

Happy to have genuine alternatives suggested.

However can you tell me you never go anywhere on an airplane? Never drive a car? Because you’re a hypocrite if you push one whilst doing the other.

Fair enough with the ibs.

Never said I was an eco warrior, so personal attacks aren't needed.

5foot5 · 04/07/2023 21:23

Simple, I like meat! I don’t eat it with every main meal, or even every day. I do like many veggie dishes and often cook meat free meals. But then I like to vary what I eat. However I am not motivated to giving up meat anytime soon.

Oh and as regards to giving up meat being good for animal welfare, I assume if we all gave up then many domestic species will just die out? People are not going to keeps pig's and views as pets are they?

McaRoonie · 04/07/2023 21:23

Why do people have children? So much better for the environment if they don’t- yet they continue to do so!

FOJN · 04/07/2023 21:24

Are you giving up air travel, your car, using the tumble drier etc? Why not?

Have you replaced your meat consumption with highly processed meat substitutes? We have no idea about the longer term health and environmental consequences of consuming those products.

I've been vegetarian for decades and slowly making my way towards an entirely plant based diet but even I'm tired of hearing vegan/vegetarian evangelists demanding everyone else justify their dietary choices. This approach doesn't convince anyone.

Jogonmagpies · 04/07/2023 21:24

Because we are biologically designed to eat meat. Regardless of how much people want to deny it, it is a fact.

It also tastes nice. No amount of Quorn nuggets comes close to actual bacon from a pig.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 04/07/2023 21:24

Threads like these make me sad. So many people putting taste over animals lives.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 04/07/2023 21:24

Lots of people consider eating meat to be part of a balanced diet and given that it's a big part of what humans evolved on. There is also a lot of culture, tradition and comfort associated with meat-based meals. Plus you've got the meat industry marketing it to everyone and relying on people continuing to buy it. So lots of reasons I reckon.

X6hfyib4ms · 04/07/2023 21:25

I like steak, oysters, lobster, really all meat. I am a foodie and cooking / recipes is a hobby for me.

Most things I cook don't taste the same without it, eg substituting quorn mince or lentils for beef mince in a chilli.

From am evolutionary perspective I'm an omnivore. I only eat meat once a day (lunch and dinner tend to be veggie or dairy) but dinner is meat most of the time.

I'm Ok with that and not willing to sacrifice my health or pleasure when others are driving their super yachts or private jets around the globe.

MuddyBadge · 04/07/2023 21:25

Because it tastes good and is satisfying to eat. Because it can be bought cheaply.e Because it's a good, easily accessible source of protein. Because it's often quick to cook. Because meat replacements like Quorn are highly processed. Because those advocating eating less meat usually have unrealistic expectations - many families would find one meat free meal a week enough of a challenge to begin with.

BMW6 · 04/07/2023 21:25

We are the successful species we are BECAUSE we learned to cook and consume meat.

You want us to devolve??

inspiredish · 04/07/2023 21:25

BMW6 · 04/07/2023 21:20

How can it possibly be better for animal welfare when these animals need no longer exist?

It's Ruffle feathers, not Rattle.

Ha so I did mean ruffle. It's been a long day.

I'm not getting into debates with people who simply won't change their minds. This is your second post already so it seems as though your gunning for a debate that I simply don't have the energy for. This was just to see the reasons.

Cw112 · 04/07/2023 21:26

I was vegetarian for a few years, I was careful with my meal planning and I'm not fussy. But I ended up seriously anaemic (I'm usually around borderline any way) and I was unable to take iron tablets with my other medication. I still have vegan and vegetarian days of the week as I enjoy the food but I didn't find it beneficial for my health. I think everyone should be able to eat what they feel is the appropriate diet for them and while it's fine to educate people it's not OK to enforce.

megacat · 04/07/2023 21:26

I would happily give up meat however the rest of my family wouldn't. I continue to buy/ eat it for easiness. I do eat meat free as much as possible though.
The videos of pigs in the gas chambers are really upsetting, and I struggle with pig meat as a result. But I know me giving it up won't save a pig going through that.
I've nothing against eating meat if the animals are treated humanely. It's the horrific suffering they endure that makes me want to be vegetarian. I challenge any of these 'but it tastes nice!' sorts to watch a pig gas chamber video and look at a bacon butty in the same way again.

Oysterbabe · 04/07/2023 21:27

I really enjoy eating it, life can be tedious and you have to embrace simple pleasures.

kitsuneghost · 04/07/2023 21:27

Why don't people give up pets? That would be the best thing we could do.
Why is driving and eating meat always the ones that are trotted out.

AliTheMinx · 04/07/2023 21:27

I really love meat. It tastes great! Not mad keen on vegetables, so very happy to keep on eating meat in my diet. I couldn't entertain giving it up.

OhcantthInkofaname · 04/07/2023 21:27

Because there is nothing like a medium rare ribeye!

BeverlyHa · 04/07/2023 21:29

Because is someone's idiotic ideological invention. No one has to give up meat. Full stop.

eandz13 · 04/07/2023 21:29

I've been looking into giving it up recently, I actually want to. It's just, most of our family meals are the typical ones: cottage pie, sausage mash and veg, lasagne, casseroles and stews etc, and I cannot stand fake meats (quorn and the like). So what on earth would I put with it that fussy kids would eat, too? I tried a lentil lasagne once and it didn't go down well. My vegan chickpea chilli is better than standard chilli though!

Foxesandsquirrels · 04/07/2023 21:29

Is it really that bad for us? I really don't think it is. I can't even imagine the crap that's in Quorn and all the other substitutes. Meat is quick and convenient too.

Yellowlegobrick · 04/07/2023 21:30

I bloody love eating meat. Its delicious, its rich and satisfying and somehow it meets a need my body has like nothing else. Not sure if its the haem iron, or B vits, or the fat & protein, but my body recognises that its nutritionally got a lot to offer.

OrigamiOwls · 04/07/2023 21:30

Because I have ARFID and struggle with majority of vegetables.
