Permanently banned for ‘promoting hate’

RumAndReisling · 04/07/2023 13:32

Following ten years uneventful membership of a major social media site I have been permanently banned for ‘promoting hate’.

Never again will I be able to participate on that site.

My crime? Saying that if you had given birth to a child, there was no way you could literally change sex and produce semen to father one.

Is this not a statement of fact, or is this now unacceptable to say?

AIBU to say that my husband isn’t able to give birth?

Bloody hell.

And I say that as a historian.

Bloody hell.

I'm pretty sure white history is taught in schools everyday of the year. No need for a specific month is there?

wutheringkites · 04/07/2023 14:00

There is a current thread on here that some posters want deleted because it doesn't align with their gender agenda so not all is well in Mumsnet land either.

Sorry that was meant for @jane1956

Well yes, that was the cause of my exclamation, if it wasn’t clear

As everyone else is too understandably horrified to explain this I will.

This is not the same in any way, shape or form.

Everyday is white history day in this country, because it's a majority white country. Black history month is to draw attention to the history of a minority group.

This has no similarity in any way to pretending that transmen can produce sperm or transwomen can get pregnant.

Fordian · 04/07/2023 14:02

Thankfully, of ALL people, Elon's not as captured as others.

I mean, he warned that using the word 'TERF' as a targeted attack isn't allowed anymore.

TRA we're furious! 😂

Superdupes · 04/07/2023 14:02

Sorry cross posted! But said pretty much exactly the same thing!

Agix · 04/07/2023 14:02

Just because a fact is spoken doesn't mean the behaviour is not hateful.

Intention and context really matter in deciding whether your behaviour and language you are using is hateful.

For instance, it's pretty much fact that my cousin is wayyyy more beautiful than I am. She is an absolute stunner. Slim and glamorous, compared to me... chubby and troll-like. It is no small difference.

If anyone started banging on about how my cousin is prettier and thinner than me, he/they wouldn't be wrong - thinner is certainly factual - but I'd also consider it pretty hateful.

What's the point in pointing that out? What are you trying to achieve here? It's fact, but in what way do you think this is relevant - what is your aim in speaking about this fact?

In the case of pointing out my aesthetic failure, it's apparent that the intentions are obviously pretty unkind, even if it is nothing but truth being spoken.

It's also not really conducive if the context of conversation is, say, whether I deserve basic respect and consideration or not.

I didn't mean to quote you 🤣 I 100% agree with you

Let's not conflate racism with transgender ideology/ biological reality please we will be tying ourselves up in metaphorical knots again
I would suggest these are two seperate conflicts warranting seperate threads

@jane1956 you're not doing yourself any favours.

Beauty IS a value judgement. Standards of beauty have differed historically and cross cultures.

A more accurate comparison would be pointing out your cousin is taller than you. Or has a particular hair colour. Those are statements of fact.

Iwasafool · 04/07/2023 14:06

It's hard to know without context, I'm assuming you didn't suddenly announce that view in the middle of a chat about what's happening on Coronation St or who you want to win at Wimbledon.

Unless you've been living in a cave for last ten years, everyone should know the risk of comments like that on Facebook, Reddit etc

And what ... we should just sit back and take it? Reality be damned?

If you want to keep using their site, yes.

Op could've posted that comment on MN and got seven pages of people telling them they are correct, so why do it on a site that will ban you..

Similarly there's stuff that gets you banned on MN but wouldn't on Facebook or Reddit, so make your own choices

QueenCamilla · 04/07/2023 14:08

Which site? Or is that another thing that shall not be spoken about unless the men take us away in the night?

Beauty is not an objective standard so that is a piss poor comparison. As is the face baiting.

Humans who give birth cannot produce sperm. That is a fact. It's not hateful. It's science.

Clymene · 04/07/2023 14:08

Race baiting, not face baiting.

I don't know that I'd have banned you. Probably would have pinned your post to the top of the page so everyone knew who the female Laurence Fox was and have a good laugh.

TheKeatingFive · 04/07/2023 14:10

If you want to keep using their site, yes.

What kind of world are we creating where people are frozen out of social spaces for stating scientific fact though? If it was the 'flat earth society' then fine, but in more mainstream discourse?

Conkersinautumn · 04/07/2023 14:12

Gender identity is a protected characteristic. I don't see why you think you spouting conspiracy theories and hate is somehow OK. There are agreed terms of use, review them.

FOJN · 04/07/2023 14:13

If anyone started banging on about how my cousin is prettier and thinner than me, he/they wouldn't be wrong - thinner is certainly factual - but I'd also consider it pretty hateful.

You think someone would have to be motivated by hate to vocalise such an observation? Hate is a pretty powerful emotion, wouldn't it be more likely that someone was being rude, tactless, socially inept or insensitive?

The differences between the sexes matter in some areas of life and we need to be able to use accurate language when it does matter. There is nothing hateful about that.
