Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

Initially I was going to say around 7 or 8 because it’s a bit messy/ not realistic. But looking closer I think maybe 10 or 11. The shading, use of space and colour is great. I love the style.

junglejane66 · 29/06/2023 16:17

6 or 7?

RosieandJimbo · 29/06/2023 16:17

Damnyouautocorrect1 · 29/06/2023 16:17

8-10 as well. Good drawing

Icannoteven · 29/06/2023 16:18

Also, yes I think there is definitely artistic potential there. They have a unique style, both in the way they use colour and in the way they use lines (see the eye/nose area).

TidyDancer · 29/06/2023 16:18

8/9. I like it!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 29/06/2023 16:18

My 6 year old still draws stick figures (or sausage figure as we call them) so I would say 9?

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/06/2023 16:18

I once read on another of these threads that there are certain features of artistic development which arise around certain ages. I remember somebody saying that the “seeing” the shadows of the nose and that noses lead into eyebrows, and trying to reflect that using a heavy outline which turns directly into eyebrows is apparently usually around 7-9. So that’s my guess, on the basis of having read that.

It’s a nice drawing and I expect better than I could do.

Curlyhairedassasin · 29/06/2023 16:18

Could be a wide range. DD draw at a similar level at 7-8. I am late 40s and couldn't produce art like that 😂

I am not good at guessing ages.

If a younger child drew it then I would say yes it is good and shows artistic potential.

If an older child drew it then I would expect the facial features to be more realistic if that was the style they were going for, but not necessarily if they were looking to imitate a particular style that isn't supposed to be realistic, if that makes sense. (Sorry, I know nothing about art history and can't name any of the artistic movements or pinpoint what style this looks like. But I mean, for example, the way Picasso drew faces was not supposed to be realistic.)

Useruser222 · 29/06/2023 16:20

10/11

pinguins · 29/06/2023 16:21

Innate artistic potential/talent is a myth. Artists get good from years and years (tens of thousands of hours) of practice, from learning the techniques for things like measuring relative sizes of objects, from practising working with different media, textures and light sources, from thinking about things in a creative way, and from having a passion for what they do.
A child with a passion for art will almost certainly be able to become good at it, disbarring any impediments. If your child has passion, encourage it and don't worry too much about what "level" they're at right now!

arethereanyleftatall · 29/06/2023 16:23

This is quite difficult because the shading and colouring 'level' seems far higher than the actual outline of the drawing. The drawing itself is say around 6, but the shading, around 10.

TheNoodlesIncident · 29/06/2023 16:23

Have they copied existing artwork that looks slightly cartoonish?

It would be more impressive if it was entirely their own style, but I can remember creating drawings like this in primary from replicating someone else's.

orchardsquare · 29/06/2023 16:24

I'd say somewhere between 7 and 10. It could be an older child, and it's still a good picture, but then I don't think you'd be asking this question. If the child is 5 then it's amazing!

Curseofthenation · 29/06/2023 16:24

6-7 based on my niece and nephew's drawing, but I have limited experience with children's drawings!

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 29/06/2023 16:26

At 8 or 9ish very talented!

But then I'm awful at art so not exactly an informed opinion...

ratherbthedevil · 29/06/2023 16:28

This looks like something I could draw, so I'd say mid 30s?

BuffyTheCat · 29/06/2023 16:29

My cousin is a few years younger than me and I grew up seeing the paintings he did as a child. He’s now a successful artist. (I am not. I can barely paint a wall.) So that’s where I’m coming from in commenting on this picture.

I think it shows skill in execution. There are some issues with composition and perspective, but I’d expect that in a child’s work. The nose and the ear are not carefully observed- again, I’d expect that in a child’s work. I think this young artist could make very good progress with appropriate teaching/training. And I’d guess s/he is about 10. But I’m no expert - ask the child’s teacher!
