Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

We don't know what the OP wants, can only speculate, in the absence of a return to thread.

RoseGoldEagle · 30/06/2023 03:57

There’s something quite captivating about it, I think it’s great. My DD is 6, nearly 7 and I regularly see artwork that her and her classmates have done, and something like this would stand out a mile.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/06/2023 04:02

And the OP doesn't have a posting history under that name, as far as I can tell.

@BodegaSushi

Oooh salty. Wink Projecting much??? Many 5-6 year olds I know could do this. We obviously move in different circles dear. Smile

Stop talking bollocks.

TheYear2000 · 30/06/2023 05:35

It's a nice drawing by a child. I am an artist and teach children art. This drawing clearly isn't drawn from the imagination or from life, it's been made looking at an existing picture of Queen Victoria. I'd say copying existing pictures is technically not as challenging for most children/people. I agree with PP, why the question about whether or not it's good? It's a lovely drawing. If the child likes art, encourage them to keep it up!
And encourage them to draw both from life (eg looking in mirror to do self portraits, drawing things around the house) and from the imagination, as well as copying paintings/photos if they enjoy that.

Scalottia · 30/06/2023 05:42

🙄 Picasso must drive your 6 year old mad!

Being 'gifted artistically' isn't just about colouring within the lines.

KatharinaRosalie · 30/06/2023 06:18

I think people who are saying 6 or 7 haven't looked at a 6 or 7 year old's drawings recently!

While I think DS is quite talented (posted his drawing earlier), I haven't considered DD that special, and this is what she did age 7. So I am quite surprised people are saying the original painting is good for a 10-12 yo. Maybe I need to reconsider my opinion about DDs skills.

I agree with @peachicecream its difficult to pin down an age to an artistic style.

I don't agree with the comment that artistic talent cannot be innate.

My brother is a case in point. At the age of 7 onwards into adulthood he was completely immersed in art, mainly pen and ink drawings. He could literally draw anything, the detail and observations were totally awe-inspiring. It was innate talent no doubt. You'd never be able to "guess his age" by looking at his art, it would have been impossible, or at least wildly inaccurate.

Similarly a girl in my class at school was prodigious by the age of 11 she could have been a new age Beatrix Potter with her Tales of the Riverbank genre. She used to unveil her creations completed over a weekend in the Monday art lesson. She went on to be a professional artist.

OP I love your DC's painting (presumably Queen Victoria?). It's charming, love everything about it, down to the rich red backdrop, with the contrasting royal blue sash, all very regal. I hope you come back and tell us their age. I think 10-11 years old.

You can certainly have an inclination or tendency towards it, I'm not disputing that. I have that myself. What I do dispute is the idea that people are simply bad at art or can't do it - observation and drawing are skills which can be learned.

The people in your examples, as well as having a natural level of ability, spent a lot of time doing it.

If they had not spent a lot of time doing it, their 'talent' would not have progressed. The same with anything else.

I dislike it when people say I am 'talented' because I have created a high quality art work. That is the result of years of hard work, effort and skill, honing my art.

You would not say an olympic athlete is 'talented' if they win a gold. They might have some natural flair for sport, but what is recognised is their years of hard work. It's exactly the same in art.

Anyone can be a good artist, just like anyone can be a good sportsperson. Not everyone can 'win a gold' but everyone can do it if they put time and dedicated effort into it.

starrynight21 · 30/06/2023 06:21

Looks very much like this pic of Queen Victoria. I think it has been copied.

People saying a 5 year old 😂
I'd guess 11 or 12

pilates · 30/06/2023 06:30

9/10

DIYandEatCake · 30/06/2023 06:36

It could be any age in a big range - my dd’s art was similar around age 6 (she has always loved art and spent a lot of her free time on it), but my son is nearly 10 and hardly ever draws/paints of his own accord - I’d be really impressed if he managed something like this. Whatever the age it’s a lovely picture.

KatharinaRosalie · 30/06/2023 06:47

Yes but you still need some innate talent to start with to be not just OK at sport, but great. I'm quite sure even when training as hard as I can my entire life, I would never be an olympic sprinter. Of course the opposite is true, DH did show natural ability to be a runner - but his parents or teachers never developed it, so while he is still good, he could have been great with proper training.

That is amazing. I love it. I would genuinely have that on a birthday card or something

Marmitecrumpetswithalittlecheese · 30/06/2023 07:20

@KatharinaRosalie that is absolutely brilliant 👏 my lovely 6.5 year old is still drawing basic stick people 🤣🤣🤣🤣

WhamBamThankU · 30/06/2023 07:21

Scrolled all the way through and still no answer?? I think a 10 year old for what it's worth

Lol that's probably why my contract wasn't renewed never mind the cuts it was the quirking. I'm in secondary school now they're a bit more accepting 🤣

This is a fantastic drawing! really talented

Qbish · 30/06/2023 10:06

I am simply bad at art. My OH can draw brilliantly. It just is that way. He doesn't need to practise, although he would really improve if he did.

Whereas I can only produce drawings that look like a poorly co-ordinated five year old did them 😆

It doesn't take much courage to write 42, or whatever the age is.

Dotjones · 30/06/2023 11:39

I wouldn't say it's a particularly good drawing, but then there's plenty of worse art that's regarded inexplicably highligh. It's impossible to tell the age of the "artist" though, I'd guess at least five and less than 120?
