Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

Innate artistic potential/talent is a myth.

This is absolutely untrue.

Of course working hard at developing as an artist is a huge part of it - but it is complete nonsense to say innate artistic talent is a myth.

Although I'm curious if you believe that about music/acting/football/athletics?

Or just fine art?

Sandysandwich · 29/06/2023 16:48

Its good, around 7

mainsfed · 29/06/2023 16:48

In threads like this child turns out to be a teen.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/06/2023 16:50

I think yr 4/5 IME

snickersontoast · 29/06/2023 16:50

I think it's good. Shows artistic potential in the bold use of lines and also shading. How old is the child?

Floralnomad · 29/06/2023 16:52

Surely all this is subjective as it’s different if it’s made up or copied from a book . I wish people would just say my 9 yo did this what do you think rather than people randomly guessing for 4 pages etc .

Namechangeforanamechange · 29/06/2023 16:53

Did they copy it from a photograph, painting, cartoon or memory?

It depends really whether they were copying a very similar picture in a similar style and just copying the shading etc or "seeing" the shading in a photograph and translating that into different medium. I guess it also depends on whether the style was a conscious decision or they were aiming for realism and just happened to create something beautiful by chance. Either way, it is lovely.

Wishitsnows · 29/06/2023 16:53

I am terrible at art. What is in my head never reflects on the paper! It’s better than I could do in my 40’s!

Mammamia2023 · 29/06/2023 16:56

7 or 8

Cantrushart · 29/06/2023 16:57

Looks like an adult drew this in the style of a child.

viques · 29/06/2023 16:57

5 excellent control of the brush, amazing understanding of body proportion , and colour mixing

10 has been well taught to use line, to observe, to understand how to represent facial features , to use available space, to use background to enhance the composition.

15 absolutely no artistic talent whatsoever.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2023 16:58

I'd be surprised if they were younger than 9 tbh.

DS is very artistic and nearly 9. I think this is slightly above his age.

Yep..innate inability to draw certainly exists! I have it, despite having two artists as parents, and growing up in a household where drawing and all things creative were encouraged.

But I draw like a four year old. If there's an art equivalent of dyslexia, I have it. If I have a simple object in front of me, I can see it, I have a pencil in my hand, but my brain simply can't transfer what I see, to my hand and to the paper. I am seriously bad, and when anyone suggests a game of pictionary at Christmas, I panic.

My DD on the other hand draws absolutely beautifully.

veryfluffyfluff · 29/06/2023 17:00

Trying to work out if it is good or not. I mean that's a great way to knock someone's love of art out of them.

I like it.

Picasso potential
