Cook smoking at takeaway?

girlfriend44 · 26/06/2023 18:16

The person who owns and runs a takeaway near me is always smoking!
He smokes outside before starting the Cooking and sometimes in the evening between customers?
Would this give you the Ick and is it allowed?
Can you smoke and Cook for the Public?

Why would it not be allowed? What do you think will happen to the food if it is prepared by a smoker?

RoyKentsTieDyeTop · 26/06/2023 18:18

I’ve never worked with a chef who didn’t smoke, tbh.

I assume he’s not smoking in his chef whites and hat and then not washing his hands?

Also if he’s the owner are you sure he’s the one cooking?

LubaLuca · 26/06/2023 18:18

Yes you can. You can also have a shit mid-shift. Presumably he's washing his hands before touching any food after his breaks.

TheChosenTwo · 26/06/2023 18:20

Do you know what does give me the ick? People saying ‘gives me the ick’ 🤢 Are you 5?
On to the other question, if he’d washed his hands I’m fine with it. And if he hadn’t washed his hands I’d presumably be nonethewiser and also be okay with it.

dottypotter · 26/06/2023 18:26

How horrible.

Qbish · 26/06/2023 18:28

Of course you can smoke and cook for the public. Most restaurants would shut down if you couldn't.

What he can't do, is smoke inside the establishment. Other than that, he's fine.

What exactly do you think is so objectionable?

tenbob · 26/06/2023 18:29

Of course it’s really bad for food to be around any sort of smoke, which is why you never ever see things cooked on a bbq and humans haven’t spent thousands of years curing fish using smoke

Vegetus · 26/06/2023 18:29

I genuinely think most people who start threads don't live in the real world.

veryfluffyfluff · 26/06/2023 18:29

Yes that's perfectly fine as long as it's the correct distance away from the premises.

Frequency · 26/06/2023 18:30

I really wanna know what OP thinks will happen to the food if he's just had a fag but I suspect she is not gonna come back to this thread.

Barold · 26/06/2023 18:32

😂

Viviennemary · 26/06/2023 18:32

Well I don't like smoking either but I think he is acting within the law.

WonderfulUsername · 26/06/2023 18:35

Of course you can 😂

As long as they don't wear their apron outside (they're not supposed to anyway) and wash their hands, they're good to go.

I imagine they also visit the toilet during their shift.

Createausername1970 · 26/06/2023 18:36

If he has one on the go, Dot Cotton style, while he is hanging over the deep fat frier and dropping fat ash into your battered sausage, then that wouldn't be great. But health-wise, you are probably at more risk from a battered sausage than a takeaway cooked by a smoker.

TheDestinationUnknown · 26/06/2023 18:37

🤣🤣

If you have a problem with the chef smoking then I would strongly advise you to never eat out again. A sizable majority of chefs are smokers. Bonkers thread!

Of course you can smoke and cook for the public. Most restaurants would shut down if you couldn't.

Especially in Turkey or Greece.

Readyplayerthr33 · 26/06/2023 18:39

What? What are you on about @girlfriend44?

It's the hand to mouth saliva action.

First thing taught at catering college, donkeys years ago

I smoke. As long as hands are washed, I'd be fine. It's a takeaway though. Usually ours are riddled with rats and mice, with accompanying droppings.
That's why I don't bother with them.

Crabwoman · 26/06/2023 18:45

Seen some amazing chefs do a lot worse than smoke mid-shift and still managed to wash their hands and maintain spotless kitchens.

GoodChat · 26/06/2023 18:46

You're lucky it's only a cigarette you have seen him with Grin

Don't you understand food hygiene, your hands are meant to be clean.

Ah @TheChosenTwo , a kindred spirit. Such a childish Mumsnet phrase. Can't stand it.

Tlolljs · 26/06/2023 18:50

Well I think it’s revolting.

WhamBamThankU · 26/06/2023 18:52

I mean, it's not as bad as seeing the hospital staff all smoking infront of the hospital.

Frequency · 26/06/2023 18:52

I mean I pretty much took it as a given that he was washing his hands before preparing food. I would hope non-smokers also wash their hands before preparing food for the public.
