I’m 21 and working 40 hours per week in hospitality. As you can imagine this isn’t exactly bringing in mega money. I live in a flat-share and the bank of mum and dad is shut. Overall I’m just about covering my expenses but I want to make a bit of extra money on the side. So Aibu to ask for your side hustles, second job ideas, ways of making money online etc?

Rent out a room. utilise/learn digital art skills for print on demand and pdf products. Dog walk locally. Take in small animals like hamsters, guineapigs etc for holiday boarding.

Everyone is doing dog walking etc.

Find things from charity shops & resell them. Also works with clearance items and big sales.

Food delivery or package deliveries after work

Babysitting or pet sitting - a dog walk here is about $15-20 (I know I’m in the US but these aren’t US specific)

Market research - I just earned $300 for a 2 week product test. $225 for a 7 day online diary about being a mum. $80 to test cereal.

Mystery shopping - Doesn’t always make big bucks but we get free food several times a month just for reviewing our experience. If you do lots of them you can start getting shops for hotels and vacations etc too.

Just a few ideas that might help!

Lots of people do this, you need to come up with something nobody else is doing.

Matched betting have a look on Facebook join the website. I think it’s about 20 quid a month to get started. Over the past 10 years I think I probably aren’t about £25,000 tax free.

Selling your dirty knickers online?

No. What a dirty mind you have.

Soozikinzii · 27/06/2023 13:49

Where we live they're taking on auxiliary nurses there decent pay if you take part time and then do bank at the higher rate for rest of week . Also my friends just been offered the course to be a qualified nurse through the hospital. If you aren't squeamish at all of course !

My husband has learned basic SEO techniques, has set up his own website and had purchased a couple.

He specifically answers questions that are not available on the Internet - or not easily. Then writes a brief article. For example "the best dentists in kowloon for British people" if it were dentist themed. Very formulaic writing that isn't mega-interesting, but answers a question that people ask.

So his website becomes the top result for answering that question and he gets ad revenue.

Ditto for buying pre-existing websites. He'll buy a site that is already top rated or backlinked, and get paid to advertise there. Weirdly gets income from an inactive fishing website written entirely in Dutch.

I also sell a product on Etsy that I realised no one was selling, and found that it was receiving search hits without results.

Only Fans?

Nope, nothing like that. Something I thought up myself, and didn't need to ask anyone for advice.

Think for yourself. What are good at. What is there a need for, that's not been done yet.

Not really, it is a thing. There is a mumsnetter who does it. She wrote a lot about it on another thread.

Well that was massively helpful wasn't it? Hmm

What you want me to give away what I do to strangers. Would you?
I have given advice. You think what your good at, you think of something that's missing.
That's what I did.

Overthinkingperhaps · 27/06/2023 14:00

@BluebellBlueballs
That's a fab idea
I'm such a sucker for beauty boxes and always end up with stuff I don't want/already have etc.

I couldn't do that sounds horrible.
Could you?

No, I couldn't either. Depressing to think that there are so many men willing to pay for it too.

I'd love to know more about this!

My best advice to you is to join a Facebook writing group like 20booksto50k and read all the threads they have, including their useful archives. And ask lots of questions. They got me started on what is slowly turning out to be a successful writing career.

I buy beauty boxes split them up and sell them on ebay. I usually keep a few things for myself so don't make that much but if I sold everything, after fees and postage I'd make a few hundred a month especially if I scaled up. Even if I keep some things back for myself it means I'm never having to spend my salary on majeup/ skincare so still a saving

You have to learn which brands will sell well and it can be a but of a gamble but that's part of the fun.

Elemis, bobbi brown, charlotte tilbury etc sell like hot cakes.

I'm a beauty addict so this is my little hobby business

@BluebellBlueballs
May I ask where you sell them? eBay?

deepfriedwithapple · 27/06/2023 14:27

anyone seen the latest travel agent/holiday selling scheme/crap ? guessing it's like The Body Shop, Tropics and that makeup one which I cannot remember the name for. Lots of people signing up and advertising travel/holiday all over their FBook to entice people to book with them. Why anyone would book with ya mate-who-lives-around-the-corner type, is beyond me.

I bought a franchise that brings in about £500 a month on top of my day job, but you may not have the money. My SIL does Avon, another Scentsy and another makes and sells fudge on line. Another friend buys from charity shops and sells on debop she had given up a £40k job to do this full-time now but it took a few years. At your age I was employed at a Hotel doing in room babysitting for guests but we live in a seaside town so we had the customers.

Ooo I really fancy a franchise.. what would you recommend? Please!!

If you are subject to tax then you cannot earn anything extra on the side without having to pay the tax on it. Cash in hand is illegal, even it is ''only'' £25 for baby sitting or whatever.

Oh no, is that the latest MLM thing ? A lovely friend of mine started telling me how she set up as a travel agent. I’ve got a sinking feeling it’s going to be this.
