To ask for your best side hustles?

I’m 21 and working 40 hours per week in hospitality. As you can imagine this isn’t exactly bringing in mega money. I live in a flat-share and the bank of mum and dad is shut. Overall I’m just about covering my expenses but I want to make a bit of extra money on the side. So Aibu to ask for your side hustles, second job ideas, ways of making money online etc?

I do freelance translations but if you don’t have another language, I know some people who proof read. All you need is an internet connection and a good grasp of English. But I agree with the others who say beef up your qualifications. Good luck. It’s a tough world out there.

Retrain and be frugal whilst doing so. If you have a skill (foreign language, good at maths / English) you can tutor online for around £30-45 per hour. Or try working your way up, e.g. apply for the next open project manager or supervisor role that comes up in your organisation.

Shocking badly paid nowadays unless you can find direct clients. Through agencies it works out at less than £10 per hour for most language combinations due to the increasing of AI / machine translation. Maybe foreign language into English is more lucrative than vice versa though...

I've got one, but I don't want to to share sorry. Good luck and you need to work hard at it.

Fucking hell 😳

The most popular one is online surveys but honestly you only earn pennies.
Someone will come along and say match betting I’m sure as as someone who does it, yes it does bring in money but it’s not easy at the start, requires a start up fund, and not as lucrative as it use to be.

Your best bet is to try and cut down your expenditures instead, or look for a higher paying job.

Sadly there is no quick easy (legal) way to make money or everybody would do it!

I both agree and disagree on the match betting front.

I disagree that it's difficult, as you can literally just follow the instructions.

But the big offers are definitely on the decline. However, it is still a reliable format. I wouldn't write it off.

However I would say, whatever side hustle you do, put the money into a qualification OP. Check out the job requirements for the next step up the ladder, and take a combination free and paid courses as necessary to prep you for interview/get the certificate.

I've been strategically going for a different certificate a year, and it's done wonders for my salary (government bootcamps are useful here).

Side hustles are good, but maximising the value of your working hours is where it's at. My last qualification was entirely self-studied and the exam was under £300.

The people I know doing Only Fans are making a ridiculous amount of money. Though I have to say...I'd rather not have that money and keep my dignity. But it clearly does work for them. shudder

queenofthewild · 27/06/2023 09:36

Years ago waitressing used to be an excellent way of bringing Nguni in extra money. I could easily take £100-£200 in cash tips over a weekend on top of my salary.

I'm not sure if tippers are as generous these days, and tips usually are put through payroll so are taxed, but it's worth looking into.

I read an article about a 13y boy who had a panic attack at school after people were showing him pics of his mum. So sad.

You can't take back what you put out. Its not worth all the money in the world.

Hello! Could you suggest some organisations that are worth looking into for proof reading?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 27/06/2023 10:27

I currently exam invigilate which whilst boring at times and stressful moments during real exams, is pretty flexible. School will pay for your DBS too. Definitely worth considering

Does anyone know if there are opportunities for marking papers remotely? Or is all done by computer?

Long game OP what will you need to do to change this longer term comes down to the industry you want to end up in.

I work in tech, it's extremely well paid and there are a lot of government funded boot camps out there but you will need to get enough money behind you to dedicate 14 weeks to it.

Get your side hussle worked out, save that money but think about how you will put that to use for the longer term.

I've been thinking about this for a whole, and keep getting ads pop up on FB for courses but don't trust them. Where do you find legitimate courses?

I came on to suggest invigilation too, if OP is near a university/college/exam centre.

jeaux90 · 27/06/2023 11:02

@OneLittleFinger there is a thread on this in AIBU if you search on boot camp it might come up. Lots of good advice on there. Including from me Grin

jeaux90 · 27/06/2023 11:04

AIBU to move into Tech by doing one of these government funded bootcamp skills courses http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4680799-aibu-to-move-into-tech-by-doing-one-of-these-government-funded-bootcamp-skills-courses

These are all fantastic suggestions.

I just wanted to mention that any extra income should be taxed. Of course HMRC aren't going to notice you getting £25 cash for tutoring /baby sitting but if you ever pee someone off and they may report you (or blackmail you). I think you can earn £1k on a side hustle without reporting it?

I'd def say look at matched betting for a quick boost, you can make a few hundred quite quickly and easily but it's not a long term prospect these days. And it is genuinely tax free.

If you are subject to tax then you cannot earn anything extra on the side without having to pay the tax on it. Cash in hand is illegal, even it is ''only'' £25 for baby sitting or whatever.

I came here to say don't do only fans unless you are prepared for what might happen with your friends and family finding out. I know of someone who thought she wouldn't be recognised, but was very quickly.

I was referring to this on the HMRC website, but haven't read into it.

Are you any good at writing? I make a reasonable income from writing books and marketing them through Amazon. It's difficult to scale it up to the equivalent of a full-time salary, but it's possible to make extra money by writing and marketing short stories/ novellas/ novels. Apart from the covers, which can be got pretty cheaply to start with, there are no setup costs.

lemontek · 27/06/2023 11:26

Freelance content writing, great if you can get into a higher paying niche like personal finance, around £40 an hour. All you need is basic literacy and the determination to learn as you go. Research, write then optimise for search engines.
