I’m 21 and working 40 hours per week in hospitality. As you can imagine this isn’t exactly bringing in mega money. I live in a flat-share and the bank of mum and dad is shut. Overall I’m just about covering my expenses but I want to make a bit of extra money on the side. So Aibu to ask for your side hustles, second job ideas, ways of making money online etc?

Are you any good at writing? I make a reasonable income from writing books and marketing them through Amazon. It's difficult to scale it up to the equivalent of a full-time salary, but it's possible to make extra money by writing and marketing short stories/ novellas/ novels. Apart from the covers, which can be got pretty cheaply to start with, there are no setup costs.

I've got one, but I don't want to to share sorry. Good luck and you need to work hard at it.

Jeeeeze 🙄

Find things from charity shops & resell them. Also works with clearance items and big sales.

Food delivery or package deliveries after work

Babysitting or pet sitting - a dog walk here is about $15-20 (I know I’m in the US but these aren’t US specific)

Market research - I just earned $300 for a 2 week product test. $225 for a 7 day online diary about being a mum. $80 to test cereal.

Mystery shopping - Doesn’t always make big bucks but we get free food several times a month just for reviewing our experience. If you do lots of them you can start getting shops for hotels and vacations etc too.

Just a few ideas that might help!

Long game OP what will you need to do to change this longer term comes down to the industry you want to end up in.

I work in tech, it's extremely well paid and there are a lot of government funded boot camps out there but you will need to get enough money behind you to dedicate 14 weeks to it.

Get your side hussle worked out, save that money but think about how you will put that to use for the longer term.

I buy beauty boxes split them up and sell them on ebay. I usually keep a few things for myself so don't make that much but if I sold everything, after fees and postage I'd make a few hundred a month especially if I scaled up. Even if I keep some things back for myself it means I'm never having to spend my salary on majeup/ skincare so still a saving

You have to learn which brands will sell well and it can be a but of a gamble but that's part of the fun.

Elemis, bobbi brown, charlotte tilbury etc sell like hot cakes.

I'm a beauty addict so this is my little hobby business

How much do you roughly make doing this? It's something I'm interested in.

A family friend bakes cakes for bake sales and cake shops etc. It’s just a passive income as she can just bake when she prefers and even does wedding cakes where she gets most of her money. It’s cash in hand so I don’t think she pays tax on it. Or maybe it’s under the tax regulations. But I know that she only accepts pick up only unless she delivers to the cake shops. She does quite well and doesn’t even operate on Instagram, just word-of-mouth.

Study part-time towards a qualification towards a higher-paying job. Taking the long view, that's going to be much more rewarding than doing a bunch of surveys.

I agree. I'm 33 and earning 7 x more now than I did when I was 21 and working in retail.

Tangled123 · 27/06/2023 07:42

When I left my last job, they asked me to continue doing the payroll once a month from home until they found someone else. They never did so I’m still doing it a year later. It suits me though as my new job doesn’t pay me enough to cover both childcare fees and spending money.

Aye, drug running.

Cleaning early mornings or late eves

primoseyellow · 27/06/2023 07:52

@PomPomtheGreat how does that work? Are you writing the whole book and self publishing , or writing a blurb?

SoShallINever · 27/06/2023 07:54

OP, I've got friends who have hobbies that pay, digital art, crochet, chainsaw art, renovating furniture and one books holidays , (you tell her what you want and she finds a better deal).

It really depends which genre you write and how quickly you can produce books. If you're interested in having a go, I can thoroughly recommend joining the Facebook group called 20booksto50k. Those people are a mine of information. I went to a conference they ran in January, which was invaluable.

Doggymummar · 27/06/2023 07:57

I bought a franchise that brings in about £500 a month on top of my day job, but you may not have the money. My SIL does Avon, another Scentsy and another makes and sells fudge on line. Another friend buys from charity shops and sells on debop she had given up a £40k job to do this full-time now but it took a few years. At your age I was employed at a Hotel doing in room babysitting for guests but we live in a seaside town so we had the customers.

Twattle · 27/06/2023 08:02

I used to make a lot of Gousto referral credits off mumsnet. Over £1500 last year, but I think I tapped it out. Plus everyone started jumping on it and flooding the site so MN hid promos and offers from active.

I made quite a bit asking questions off Quora, but they then stooped UK partners from earning.

So, nothing right now. I love a reduced section though

RunningFromInsanity · 26/06/2023 16:26

The most popular one is online surveys but honestly you only earn pennies.
Someone will come along and say match betting I’m sure as as someone who does it, yes it does bring in money but it’s not easy at the start, requires a start up fund, and not as lucrative as it use to be.

Your best bet is to try and cut down your expenditures instead, or look for a higher paying job.

Sadly there is no quick easy (legal) way to make money or everybody would do it!

Rubbish there are tons of ways to make money on the side. How can you even suggest surveys and match betting lol?

Nordicrain · 27/06/2023 08:09

Short term - dog walking/ sitting and/or babysitting

Long term - get qualifications to get a better job

Mumtothreegirlies · 27/06/2023 08:12

Dropshipping on Amazon or eBay.
etsy shop
Little bit of crypto
good luck and I know how hard it is in hospitality, all the having to serve ungrateful customers, Long hours, low pay.
im sure you’ll find an easier way soon!

AuntieMarys · 27/06/2023 08:13

I make about £300 a month from research....Zoom one to one , as opposed to online.

Goodadvice1980 · 27/06/2023 08:14

Retrain in tech or cyber security OP. Banks seem to pay big bucks for this 👍 💰 good luck 🤞

monicagellerbing · 27/06/2023 08:16

@BluebellBlueballs do you have any Elemis pro-collagen night cream ?

Neighbours87 · 27/06/2023 08:21

Night sitting for an elderly person. It involves just sleeping over at the persons house

GimmeSleep · 27/06/2023 08:23

Boring but first of all do a statement of affairs SOA to see if there is anything you can cut back on (even if it's just temporarily)

There's also an up your income section on the money saving expert forum which has some good ideas
Boost your income

I would say no to home boarding for small animals as you'd have to be licensed by the local council; however you would be able to visit people's homes and do pop-ins (e.g. feed & fresh water) for example, guess you'd need some sort of insurance for this though.

SOA Calculator

Use the SOA Calculator to understand your financial position and understand your outgoings. Can be used by the CAB
