To ask for your best side hustles?

I’m 21 and working 40 hours per week in hospitality. As you can imagine this isn’t exactly bringing in mega money. I live in a flat-share and the bank of mum and dad is shut. Overall I’m just about covering my expenses but I want to make a bit of extra money on the side. So Aibu to ask for your side hustles, second job ideas, ways of making money online etc?

I had a girl at work tell me all about how you don’t need to pay tax if you earn £40 grand a year on dog breeding. Christ knows where she’s got that from and I very much doubt anybody will come after her but there’s a lot of misinformation out there.

At your age I would look at training in an industry where there is a skill shortage or look at getting into a job where progression is possible. I would put that above trying to part/time side hustle alongside a different full time job.

justteanbiscuits · 27/06/2023 14:47

I'm an advanced first aider (3 days of courses in total, on Sundays, very affordable) and provide first aid at amateur events. I charge £25 an hour and only do events and times I want.

I do freelance translations but if you don’t have another language, I know some people who proof read. All you need is an internet connection and a good grasp of English. But I agree with the others who say beef up your qualifications. Good luck. It’s a tough world out there.

I'd love to proof read. Have you any tips on where to start. I looked previously but it was a link to an incredibly expensive training course 😩

Maglin · 27/06/2023 15:03

I'm a trained proof reader but I've never seen a single job advertised!

My advice @Sidehustelesplea is to get out of hospitality. I worked in hospitality at your age and the working conditions and poor pay is sole destroying. I should have listened to my mother when she begged me not to go to hospitality college. I ended up doing some night classes and getting additional skills, then moved into the food manufacturing industry instead, much better salary and working conditions.

Your post lacks any detail of what exactly you do, so hard to offer career advice.

I wouldn't bother much with a side hustle and I'd just retrain and get a career in a better industry.

If you're adamant about staying in hospitality, then depending on your skills and likes, could set up an etsy shop and sell online, play music at weddings/events if you are good at an instrument, photography? private chef.

Offer to wash the neighbours cars.

I read that as cats 😂

Try grafternow. I used to hire people from there for small jobs. The minimum is about £120 a day, you have to pay commission to the site, but after you have a network you can go direct. It's generally day rate but can be fixed price for longer/bigger jobs. I would recommend you do smaller ones or stick to day rate. You may need to have a lower day rate initially to get some reviews.

If you are able to use masking tape and roller paint a wall without spilling paint everywhere then you are better than half the people I have hired as decorators through that website for up to £200 a day.

You can watch some YouTube videos on caulking in plaster gaps and wallpaper removal. You should be okay without tools (particularly if you start with a low day rate) but if you do need them they are cheap and easy to transport even if you don't have a car.

For ages I was hoping to hire a student with some common sense to do painting for me so I am sure there are opportunities for you there. Best of luck.

What you want me to give away what I do to strangers. Would you?
I have given advice. You think what your good at, you think of something that's missing.
That's what I did.

Hell no. I don't want to know what you do. I've seen enough of your threads and posts on here to have a good idea.

pontipinemum · 27/06/2023 15:12

At uni I did promotions work. It paid really well. Sometimes it was crap such as dressed as a fairy handing out fliers. I sat at a desk in a shopping centre and if people had spent €100 they showed me the receipt and I put them in the draw that was boring but easy. I also did the in store promo's giving out little samples of things.

Dog sitting.
Also know someone who sells worn shoes on Ebay , it's a kink thing. She funded her maternity leave this way ...

My friend did that! Weird, but ok!

I am interested in proof reading

Short term I think dog walking is an enjoyable way to make extra cash (need insurance though) but long term I agree that upskilling is the best option.

BluebellBlueballs · 27/06/2023 16:20

FireflyJar · 27/06/2023 14:27

@BluebellBlueballs
May I ask where you sell them? eBay?

Yes, ebay

People moan about the fees but I'm happy to pay the fees for essentially access to a massive market. No way could I reach such a big market on my own

As they are usually known, expensive brands they pretty much sell themselves and the few non selling items I either keep, gift or donate.

People generally know what they are buying and happy to pay a much reduced price on RRP so I find my returns/ non arrival claims very low maybe one in a hundred.

@uhtredbebbanburg how did you get into that? I speak another language (native). Thought courses were required for this, tho?

SoWhatEh · 27/06/2023 17:01

My DS2 - your age - has a good side hustle selling clothes online that he finds in sales and charity shops. He occasionally gets stung by dodgy buyers but most of the time, he earns good money from it. A lot more per hour than hospitality. And DS1, a post grad student, does some virtual PA work and publicity for a start up company. Very good hourly rates but last minute, ad hoc unsociable hours, and you have to have great organisational skills, brilliant grammar and a good eye for detail.

Sisiwawa · 27/06/2023 18:03

Genuine question - how do you look into careers that has good progression?! I often see it on MN and am nearer the end of my working life than the beginning, but would love to know. Where is this info? Through friends? What if you don't have many high-flyer friends? Through Glass Ceiling or Recruitment websites? It all seems a well-kept secret to me! Where's the info/stats/ salary info that could help a person decide??

Its strange but it did work, also got my dh to post aswell.
I was having a large weekly box from April until October for free, often with extras such as bottles of olive oil.
My kids got so fed up of it as it became very repetitive.
I also gifted alot of boxes to people.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 27/06/2023 18:33

I've got nice handwriting, so I write signs on blackboards for cafes, etc.

I've also done a bit of VO work, which i'd like to do more of.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 27/06/2023 18:37

I used to invigilate exams as well.

I'd take a week off work to do it.

My friends art student daughter does this. She also decorates shop and office widows for Halloween, Christmas etc

It's very easy money, I'll be honest with you, and good fun, too.

@Ameanstreakamilewide I’m the least bit artistically creative. Digital art is more milieu. But curious to hear how it works? Do you need a portfolio for that? Or do you approach cafés with photos of your previous work via Instagram etc.?
