Supermarket delivery driver took photo of my passport- no age restricted items

Hi just had a delivery of groceries. My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.
the delivery driver once I’d unloaded said I had age restricted items that required proof of iD. I asked what items and he said he doesn’t know just that his system flagged. I went to get my passport and he took a pictire
of it. I then went on the website and checked the policy they don’t say that they require drivers to provide proof of ID and the order didn’t contain age restricted items at all.
i know mistakes happen but I dunno why I feel weird about this

Why would you let him have sensitive data? You need to flag this with the supermarket.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/06/2023 19:37

Ring their customer services and report this. Might be a system glitch, a misunderstanding by him or him being weird.

BelindaBears · 23/06/2023 19:38

Was this one of the mainstream supermarkets? I’ve never had to provide proof of age to Sainsbury’s, tesco, Asda or Ocado.

DragonDoor · 23/06/2023 19:40

That’s weird- I’ve never heard of a photo needed for proof of ID.

Brigitteshittette · 23/06/2023 19:43

I had this with asda a few years back.
I refused, so he took my shopping away, leaving me with 3 kids with Norovirus and a newborn 😭I asked him to take out the age restricted item if he could go find it, he refused.

QuintanaRoo · 23/06/2023 19:44

I once bought chicken tikka chunks in tesco and it flagged as an age check product. Cashier insisted on seeing ID. So maybe a similar blip and maybe their policy now is drivers have to take photos so they can evidence they saw ID. I can’t imagine anyone can do something with a poor quality photo of a passport. It’s not like it’s been professionally scanned.

ISeeMisledPeople · 23/06/2023 19:45

Definitely report it.

There is no need for him to take a photo of your id.

Identity theft doesn't require a professional level scan of a passport.

Apart from the risk of Id theft, it's a gdpr issue. Why the need to take a photo of Id. How is it being processed? How will the shop use it?

I've had to show id on my doorstep for age restricted items. Zero need to copy it - it's only to prove age of the person receiving the delivery

Denise82 · 23/06/2023 19:50

What did he take the picture with? A hand held device he also used for scanning the Barcodes on your shopping crates (this would be normal if he did have to take a pic, like some delivery drivers do) or his personal mobile phone?

@Poppyblush I had lots of items on the floor with no bags, was in a hurry, flustered and I did question it several times but in the moment I just needed my shopping and I tend to trust people.

@BelindaBears yes it was one of those. I’ve never had to before either- they checked my age (by looking at me!) once for delivery that had a vape in it but that’s it.

@Denise82 i don’t really know tbh it looked like a phone but it might not be. Tbh I was just a bit blindsided at the time

Call the supermarket customer service number to check. Next time you could just tell him you don’t have any ID available.

SaltyCrisps · 23/06/2023 20:33

I would definitely report this, and I wouldn't have agreed to let him see my passport. You're too trusting, OP.

TomatoSandwiches · 23/06/2023 20:39

There's no reason he needed ( in a professional capacity ) to take a picture of your passport op, do they take a picture of it at the tills? No.

Please report this immediately with his place of work and even log it with the non emergency police number, this man is a stranger who now has personal details about you and went about it in a deceitful way, it's not right.

That's sounds awful.

OP I don't know about the photo part, but maybe it was a glitch and so driver needed to verify age.
I would check with supermarket.

topnoddy · 23/06/2023 20:48

I'd have told there was no way I was showing ID and if he wanted to he could pick the shopping up and stick it back on his van

You need to report him and possibly flag it up with the passport office

AuntieDolly · 23/06/2023 20:51

What would have happened if you didn't have a passport? Very strange

He has taken a considerable amount of your data - DOB, full name, photo and passport number. I'd be calling the store immediately, this is unacceptable and in breach of gdpr. Don't forget he also has your full address, mobile number .. identity fraud screaming here.

Ladyoftheknight · 23/06/2023 21:39

I would contact their customer service line ASAP, if it was legit they'd have records of it, if not they'll know who the driver was. You know for next time, don't feel bad you've done nothing wrong!

I would absolutely report this.
