Supermarket delivery driver took photo of my passport- no age restricted items

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 19:33

Hi just had a delivery of groceries. My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.
the delivery driver once I’d unloaded said I had age restricted items that required proof of iD. I asked what items and he said he doesn’t know just that his system flagged. I went to get my passport and he took a pictire
of it. I then went on the website and checked the policy they don’t say that they require drivers to provide proof of ID and the order didn’t contain age restricted items at all.
i know mistakes happen but I dunno why I feel weird about this

@NotmyRLname as a delivery driver, I'd call the supermarket directly as there's no policy or requirement for drivers to take photos of customer's ID.

Terms and conditions will state that ID may be required to be produced whether or not you have age restricted items in your order. That's because the policy is delivery drivers cannot leave shopping with those under 18. So, drivers then need to do Think 25 and assess if customer looks under 25. If they do or driver still isn't sure, they'll ask for ID.

But taking photos of your personal ID?

Not the done thing as far as I know, so definitely query that with the store.

Often have to show my ID at front door. Never ever been asked permission for them to photograph it. Regularly shop with Ocado and Sainsbury's.

I'd get in touch with the supermarket because this sounds rather odd. I'm not quite sure how if would work, but surely if you've paid with a card you'd be of age?

No, whoever is at the property must be 18+ for ALL orders. Can't be left with those under 18.

Drivers won't know if the person at door is also the cardholder. And if they look under 25, they're to assess age and check ID.

But not take photos of ID.

I’m sure we’ve had this before and it’s a bit odd with under 18s being able to live alone and buy food

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2023 07:28

It’s very very odd. Not least because any under 18s who live alone are extremely unlikely to be able to drive.

Think 25 is out of control. Fine with booze but someone forgets their ID trying to buy Calpol for their baby for example?

It also randomly comes up, I had it once on a quiche 🤷🏻‍♀️

HouseofHolbein · 24/06/2023 07:28

I'm a team leader for home delivery in a large supermarket. This is not policy for us. Drivers need to look at proof of ID if customers look under 25 and note what they have looked at on their hand held device but no photographs required.

I wonder if the driver has failed a challenge 25 and is being over the top about it? Or is new and has managed to misunderstand something? Either way I would want to know so I could go through training again with them.

Please contact the supermarket and tell them. Do it asap while they still have records of your delivery (routes are kept onscreen for 7 days with us which makes it a lot easier to see who delivered to you)

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2023 07:29

It’s bordering on age discrimination where there aren’t specific laws for age restriction.

Circethemagician · 24/06/2023 07:30

I think there are some strange age-restricted items nowadays.
Recently, at Aldi at the self-checkout, I had to get a member of staff to authorise my cucumber as it came up as a restricted item…

Zonder · 24/06/2023 07:33

He relied on you being blindsided. Definitely report it to the company.

Emotionalsupportviper · 24/06/2023 07:40

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/06/2023 19:37

Ring their customer services and report this. Might be a system glitch, a misunderstanding by him or him being weird.

Yes - please do this.

Even if you are fortunate enough to look very young, there is no way he should be photographing your identification.

Give as much detail as you can ie not just your address but also the time he delivered so they can identify him

I wonder how many people he has done this too - how much private info he now has access to.

He might be being over-cautious, but if he's dishonest, he could have done this to a lot of folks and be misusing it.

It's not discriminatory to ask for ID to make sure you're complying with company policy.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2023 07:52

That’s not true. Company policy can be discriminatory. Obviously it is the company who would be in the wrong not the individual. I think the supermarkets are increasingly on dodgy ground.

He did look quite embarrassed about it to be fair. 😂

Called the police 101 number and call handler said her supervisor said this is “quite normal”…? That the driver has to prove to cover himself. Going to see. What the customer services say when they get back to me

What the actual fuck?

You phoned the police Confused

Fuck sake OP it's the store you need to call to find out about policy, not the bloody police. That's for reporting crime. At the moment no crime has been committed. Call the store.

MargaretThursday · 24/06/2023 08:04

I've sometimes been surprised at things that have flagged up as needing I D.
Sharpie pens
Hand sanitizer are two I remember, but there's been really odd ones I can't work out at all.
If they do want ID then it is normally photo, for which most people only have passport or driving licence. If the system is flagging up as checking IS then he can't override it. I don't see why he'd need a photo though, so call and ask about that.

Beseen22 · 24/06/2023 08:08

There is no issue with him requesting to see ID. It could be an error but it has flagged up that there is a restricted item and he was just trying to do his job. The think 25 policy is not age discrimination.

The problem is with the photo. I'm hoping he's being over cautious due to a previous error but this needs to be stopped. There's no way that this is a big supermarket's policy but could be an overzealous manager of a specific team putting a silly rule in place. I know GDPR gets thrown about a lot here but organisations are required to store the absolute minimum data...this is breaching this. Is this information stored on a personal phone? Is there any encryption? How long will it be stored? Has the delivery driver been trained in how to safely store this data? He can't just randomly be taking photos on his phone without all these things having been considered.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 24/06/2023 08:12

You called the police?? That is such a dramatic reaction.

Speak with the supermarket to see why this has happened. Send an email saying that you want all your information deleted as per GDPR guidelines. Don’t let anyone take a picture of your passport again. Job done

ScandiNoirNuit · 24/06/2023 08:12

What was the store response OP?

Justaddalittlespice · 24/06/2023 08:14

Are you definitely sure he took a photo and wasn't just putting in your date of birth. Some items are age restricted that you genuinely wouldn't think of like party poppers for example are you sure you had nothing age restricted. If unsure ring the store for reassurance

It was the non emergency number and it’s for advice. It wasn’t to report a crime it was because I felt worried about the amount of information that this man now has on me and felt it was suspicious.
I have called the supermarket but it won’t help if he’s a stalker or something will it.

NotmyRLname · 24/06/2023 08:18

@Beseen22 thank you, yes I’m waiting on customer services to get back but I will definitely ask it to be removed and their website updated to tell people this is ok.

So, what did the supermarket say when you rang them?
