Supermarket delivery driver took photo of my passport- no age restricted items

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 19:33

Hi just had a delivery of groceries. My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.
the delivery driver once I’d unloaded said I had age restricted items that required proof of iD. I asked what items and he said he doesn’t know just that his system flagged. I went to get my passport and he took a pictire
of it. I then went on the website and checked the policy they don’t say that they require drivers to provide proof of ID and the order didn’t contain age restricted items at all.
i know mistakes happen but I dunno why I feel weird about this

Phone the supermarket customer service again and tell them you want to be put through directly to the store that deliver to you. Speak to the manager that deals with deliveries and they can speak to the driver

Rolling my eyes at everyone on this thread scaring OP by telling her it DEFINITELY sounds like ID theft and she was very stupid to show her passport and he could EVEN be planning to stalk her!!!

...then making her feel like a twat for calling the police.

@NotmyRLname

My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.

Must admit this bit made me laugh!!! 😆

Seriously though, this is absolutely awful and there's no way in hell I would have showed him the passport. (Sorry I don't mean this to be like a go at you.) I'd have just said I haven't got one and I haven't got a driving licence either. I would not be letting some random delivery man photograph my personal private sensitive information like this.

You really seriously need to contact the store about this. This is very serious.

This sort of reminds me of when we were in a private let property a few years ago for several years, and somebody came round to do an inspection on the house. I think it was about the end of our second year.

They took, I'm not kidding you, about 85-90 photographs!!! Must have been around 8 or 9 taken in each of the 10 rooms that were in the house. They took pictures with our meds/drugs on them, and pictures that had photographs of our children in, and pictures in our childrens bedrooms. There were pictures of our clothes and underwear on the bed and all our personal stuff everywhere, including paperwork. Nothing was put away, because they didn't warn us they were going to take any photos, let alone fucking nearly a fucking hundred!!!

I got absolutely blindsided too and taken unawares, as I didn't know they were going to take any pictures. I did say 'don't take any more pictures please' after the first 35-40 or so, but he said 'I won't take many more, just need to take a few of this and that la la la...' and then he kept taking them.! I was stunned that they were taking so many. I thought they were going to take 1 picture in each room maybe, just to show the room is in good condition. But 8 or 9 in each room and close up pics of stuff just stunned me.

I'm not ashamed to say I felt violated and upset - especially as he wouldn't stop when I asked him to. I reported it to the landlord but I don't know if she did anything about it. She never got back to me about it. I made up my mind I would never let anyone take any photos again, and would not allow an inspection without my DH there, or my 6 ft 5 brother. Weirdly, the next inspection was 12 months later, and they took NO photos. Didn't even try.

My thought is that the driver misunderstood what was needed. Or his manager did. Or he's on a warning for not checking stuff an is being zealous.

I'm fairly sure we've discussed this before and consensus is that whilst the delivery driver has a 'flag' to tell him he needs to age check for restricted items he's not told what the item is.

Not at home, rather at the checkout, but there are all sorts of things that might need a check. Knives or other sharp objects, some medications, glue or other products with solvents etc.

The one we were pulled up for that was a really odd was toothpaste.

Apparently some kits to whiten teeth contain age restricted stuff Hydrogen Peroxide stick in my mind but it might be something else. As a result Waitrose locally had any toothpaste that had the word whitening on the label down as needing an age check. Even just oridinary stuff that's supposed to help whiten your fangs.

Check it out by all means but I think calls for the driver to be sacked etc are way OTT.

A quick risk assessment says that while ID theft could be a packet of trouble the probability of it happening this way is low enough to not require any mitigation.

@SunIsShininInTheSky

I mean I hate to say this but

Why you said you hate to say it did you think it would absolve you of racism?

I have reported your post.

I think we are different groups of people?

Even still, the issue lies with the company who have the picture, the police cannot do anything here, the supermarket can.

OP, given some of the initial posts I can see why you called the police for advice.

I agree with the advice to contact the supermarket’s Data Protection Officer. If you’re willing to say which supermarket, I’m sure someone could find this for you quickly if you can’t spot the contact details yourself.

You need to ask them whether taking a photo of your ID is in line with their Privacy Notice (this is the statement they are required to have stating on what basis they are gathering information, and how they use and store it). If it isn’t, this is a breach of GDPR and you could report it to the Information Commissioner.

If the driver is acting in a way that he shouldn’t be, a DPO’s intervention should bear weight with the store manager.

Think you just had your ID stolen OP.

Guessing the driver uses this excuse multiple times a day and then sells the ID information.

What I said wasn't racist. It looks like I said something terrible as it got deleted when I didn't. Oh well good luck op, hopefully it wasn't someone dodgy and his wires were crossed.

What you said was racist. That's why it was deleted. man didn't deleted your comments for a laugh because I reported them, they deleted them because they were racist. I have asked them to delete my comments that quote you as well.

I'm sorry for the derail OP but I absolutely couldn't sit back and watch someone make such awful comments.

Pudmyboy · 24/06/2023 10:26

Crikey on Mumsnet you are damned if you do and damned if you don't!@NotmyRLname I have sympathy for you, following advice to call the police then getting shredded for doing the same! To me if I thought something dodgy had been going on, then the non-emergency police line could give advice, which they did.
Plus all the people who would know exactly what to do in any circumstance and are astonished that others don't have that ability!
I hope you get a good resolution to this OP, please let us know the outcome?

I didn't ask about anyone's race omg!!!

Zarataralara · 24/06/2023 10:29

If the food was already inside my door I’d have just closed the door on him.

chemistnightmare · 24/06/2023 10:32

You made several racist remarks.

I think rather then arguing with me your time would be better spent trying to learn why those comments were racist.

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 22:55

Called the police 101 number and call handler said her supervisor said this is “quite normal”…? That the driver has to prove to cover himself. Going to see. What the customer services say when they get back to me

You phoned 101? Hmm Surely you call the supermarket to confirm why and take it from there. This site gets worse I swear.

Floatlikeafeather · 24/06/2023 10:45

If you Google your local store (or whichever the delivery came from) and get their phone number, you'll get through to their customer services. Ask to speak to the manager. As I said, he was on the phone within half an hour. I told him the issue. He phoned back again later when he had managed to track down the delivery woman and it was all sorted. They want to get any issue related to their store sorted out as soon as possible, so that higher level management don't get involved. If they seem to be dragging their feet, tell them that you found it all so worrying that you have already contacted the police. They don't need to know the useless response you got from them! No one working in that sort of capacity has the right to photograph your passport.
