Supermarket delivery driver took photo of my passport- no age restricted items

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 19:33

Hi just had a delivery of groceries. My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.
the delivery driver once I’d unloaded said I had age restricted items that required proof of iD. I asked what items and he said he doesn’t know just that his system flagged. I went to get my passport and he took a pictire
of it. I then went on the website and checked the policy they don’t say that they require drivers to provide proof of ID and the order didn’t contain age restricted items at all.
i know mistakes happen but I dunno why I feel weird about this

You should probably report it but it may just be a misunderstanding on the part of an overzealous delivery driver.

BittenontheBum · 24/06/2023 08:19

Not during a delivery, but was age checked in a well known supermarket when I bought a succulent. When I questioned why I was told 'it could be used as an offensive weapon ' ...
Errrrrr, nope. No spikes or spines ffs. A 2 ltr bottle of pop would produce far more damage 🙄
Anyway... your situation sounds very odd @NotmyRLname . Let us know what the supermarket say. Hopefully the driver is new and a bit confused 🤞

Are you definitely sure he took a photo and wasn't just putting in your date of birth. Some items are age restricted that you genuinely wouldn't think of like party poppers for example are you sure you had nothing age restricted. If unsure ring the store for reassurance

@Justaddalittlespice yes definately a photo. I felt really weirded out about it.

It was the non emergency number and it’s for advice. It wasn’t to report a crime it was because I felt worried about the amount of information that this man now has on me and felt it was suspicious.

I'm struggling to see what kind of advice the police could possibly offer, other than 'take it up with the store' when it comes to someone knowing your information.

I have called the supermarket but it won’t help if he’s a stalker or something will it.

101 making the bizarre decision to tell you it's normal won't help either if he is a stalker though.

I'm sorry OP but calling the police (it doesn't matter which number you called btw, you still contacted the police) was a massive over reaction - at this stage.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 24/06/2023 08:29

I'd have challenged him and got him to call the store to query it while he was with you.

It amazes me how people give away so much personal info willy nilly.

Often companies ask for date of birth when signing up for offers - on the pretext of a 'birthday treat' (hello Hotel Chocolat- yes, you.) It's purely marketing so the data analysts can profile you and maybe even sell your data to other companies.

Giving out your DOB and your name, address etc should never to be done unless for a legal requirement.

If you have a driving licence, use that.

It's worth thinking about some other form of ID that is not your passport. That is the most valuable piece of ID you have.

@chemistnightmare ok maybe overreacted but I felt a bit vulnerable. Lesson learnt

I had this with Sainsbury’s but can’t recall if they took a photo but i used my drivers license.

They don’t just ask for ID for age restricted items they also do spot checks and check the person being delivered to is over 18 but if you look under 25 they ask.

I’ve had so many deliveries now that I don’t get asked as I tend to recognise the drivers but remember being surprised when I was but like I said they may have entered my details into their machine or took a photo but it was so long ago I can’t recall.

NotmyRLname · 24/06/2023 08:39

@ScandiNoirNuit

they have said they will get back to me in 24-48 hours. Didn’t indicate if they thought it weird or not just said they will get back to me.

That's not acceptable. How did you contact them?

I would be calling the store and asking to speak to a manager or failing that I would go to the store.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/06/2023 08:43

You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office if you think there is a break on GDRP procedures, and it seems there is.

ChatterMonkey · 24/06/2023 08:44

Actual lol at you phoning the police, i love mumsnet haha

waltzingparrot · 24/06/2023 08:49

EmpressSoleil · 24/06/2023 08:51

I regularly get Tesco's and Ocado deliveries. The most I've ever had to do is sign to say I'm over 18. I'm in my 50s so it's pretty obvious I'm not under age! I've certainly never been asked for a passport. Sounds odd to me.

How did you contact the store? Did you email the company, email the branch, phone either? When I had a problem with a delivery (completely different issue but irritating being told I wasn't in when I was in and waiting), I phoned the store it was meant to be coming from. Within half an hour the manager had phoned back and all was sorted. They don't want to lose customers. 24-48hours sounds more like response to an email. I hope you stressed that it was an important matter, because it really could be.

Stickybackplasticbear · 24/06/2023 07:16

I used to work in a supermarket doing deliveries you have to be over 18 to receive the delivery no matter the content. But I've never heard of taking a pic of a passport. I wouldn't be comfortable with this.

A similar thread came up on here a few years ago. It actually made me check with Ocado and they confirmed that my (then) 16 year old son was fine to accept my shopping as long as there were no restricted items in the shop.

He has been accepting shopping deliveries (from Ocado) for years and never any problems.

HorribleNecktie · 24/06/2023 09:05

I work for a business which has to take copies of ID during the course of our work. In order to do so, we need to first let the person know why we are doing it and what we will use that data for, how long we will be retaining it and let them know they have the option to tell us to destroy it after we have used it to the stated purpose. We also need them to give explicit written consent before we take the copy.

NotmyRLname · 24/06/2023 09:06

@Floatlikeafeather2

used the chat question facility and it wasn’t specific enough so it said call a number instead I spoke to a call centre guy who didn’t seem in any way concerned (but I suppose he’s just filtering the calls) and said someone will get back to me.

Report it to the Data Protection Officer (DPO) at the supermarket. You should find their contact details on the privacy section of the website.

HorseyMel · 24/06/2023 09:13

On Mumsnet, we unquestioningly obey any requests made of us by anyone. Regardless of reasonableness or that person's level of authority.

They we come onto Mumsnet to complain about it.

Yes, that's a much better approach than just saying "no" at the time...............

Eskarina1 · 24/06/2023 09:22

Whether he was following policy or not is one question. Great if he was in that its better than identity theft. However, the policy doesn't sound great.

How have they assessed that they need this information? How are they storing it? How are they communicating this?

BeachBlondey · 24/06/2023 09:22

Not quite the same, but Asda wouldn't sell me (aged 50) a bottle of wine, because my 18 year old daughter who was with me, didn't have ID. But it was ME buying the wine. Beyond stupid.

How do people manage to cope with adult life...?

@HorseyMel at mumsnet we have no understanding of how some people react under pressure or feeling vulnerable and victim blame them when they don’t respond like us.

Makes me wonder how the police cope with day to day business if this is the rubbish that people bring to them
