Supermarket delivery driver took photo of my passport- no age restricted items

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 19:33

Hi just had a delivery of groceries. My order contained no age restricted items- the most dangerous items were clothes pegs.
the delivery driver once I’d unloaded said I had age restricted items that required proof of iD. I asked what items and he said he doesn’t know just that his system flagged. I went to get my passport and he took a pictire
of it. I then went on the website and checked the policy they don’t say that they require drivers to provide proof of ID and the order didn’t contain age restricted items at all.
i know mistakes happen but I dunno why I feel weird about this

He has taken a considerable amount of your data - DOB, full name, photo and passport number. I'd be calling the store immediately, this is unacceptable and in breach of gdpr. Don't forget he also has your full address, mobile number .. identity fraud screaming here.

Do indentity thieves get jobs as supermarket delivery drivers and hope to catch someone willing to have a photo of their ID taken?

Sounds like the least efficient and most likely to be caught way to do it

Possibly a training issue and the driver hasnt understood what's required combined with a system glitch if you didnt order any age restricted products

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 23/06/2023 22:06

There are some strange things that flag for sale restrictions such as vanilla extract but I'm future I would refuse permission to copy id

This.

And he has OP's full address.

JudgeRudy · 23/06/2023 22:17

I'd get in touch with the supermarket because this sounds rather odd. I'm not quite sure how if would work, but surely if you've paid with a card you'd be of age?

Okshacky · 23/06/2023 22:18

Sounds odd and I’d want them to confirm they have removed the image from their system. If you get no joy name them

NotmyRLname · 23/06/2023 22:55

Called the police 101 number and call handler said her supervisor said this is “quite normal”…? That the driver has to prove to cover himself. Going to see. What the customer services say when they get back to me

"Do identity thieves get jobs as supermarket delivery drivers and hope to catch someone willing to have a photo of their ID taken?"

It's not actually beyond the realms of possibility. Identity theft tends to be done by large, well-organised gangs, and they could well have figured out that this is a great way of harvesting lots of people's personal info without having to do much.
They just need to put one person into a delivery job then sit back and wait for the photos.

As this story illustrates, some people will just go along with what the driver says. And even if they're suspicious, the police won't bother investigating.

There are lots of other scams that delivery drivers can do (pocketing valuable packages and claiming to have delivered them etc) and lots of other useful intell they could gather (about people's homes/ layouts/ entry and security systems/ patterns of absence etc) that burglars and other criminals might find useful.

Probably not but once people get into jobs where there are ways that they can take money then they often do. I worked in retail for a long time and saw so many different ways that staff would steal or commit fraud. It’s not their main intention when they take the job but it definitely happens.

OP I would ring the store and speak to a manager. If the driver hasn’t done what he should then they will know and will either offer extra training or report it to the police themselves if they can see that there is more to it. Asking for ID for age-restricted products is completely normal, taking photos isn’t. I know the supermarket that I worked for did DBS checks on delivery drivers, I don’t know if they all do.

LondonQueen · 24/06/2023 00:13

Ocado have asked for photo ID when I've had wine on the order. My usual delivery driver knows me now and doesn't ask.

Okshacky · 24/06/2023 00:44

They could easily put the age restricted items on a list so they could be removed

carkeysshopkeys · 24/06/2023 01:34

Relatives of mine are supermarket delivery drivers and they are required to perform Think 25 checks at the door, regardless of whether there are age restricted items in the order. They are not allowed to deliver shopping to under 18s full stop. Though have never heard of them having to photograph the ID, just confirm it on their handset (the thing you said looks like a phone), but could be different for other supermarkets. I think previous posters are being melodramatic, if you’re that bothered ring the shop and confirm. Otherwise it’s pure hysteria to suggest ringing the police, non emergency or otherwise.

EnthENd · 24/06/2023 01:44

Going to the police was utterly overreacting. You should have followed up with the store first. If they said that what the driver did was not normal, THEN you could consider going to the police.

Like carkeys said, supermarkets require an adult to accept any delivery regardless of products. IIRC it's to do with how contract law applies to minors. Plus there's often glitches and mistakes with individual items marked as needing an age check.

And once a staff member asks for ID, most stores policy is that they stick to that request even if it seems silly. Otherwise underage customers would manage to persuade staff into not seeing the ID after all.

EnthENd · 24/06/2023 01:47

PS: If it is dodgy, then I think it's more likely the driver plans to hit on you or stalk you than any organized crime ID theft stuff. I know that probably makes it worse not better, but that feels like the more plausible motivation assuming you're a woman and the driver was a man.

IsThisReallyPC · 24/06/2023 02:28

You really need to phone the supermarket and tell them what has happened and that you want your information deleted, talk to a senior staff member at head office.
Someone could now copy your passport and steal your ID.
Id also tell the police first and inform the supermarket that you have done this.
I know this may sound over the top but this is very serious.

BadNomad · 24/06/2023 03:16

I really doubt he was taking photos of your passport. He was probably just using the handheld to check the order details against the passport details to make sure it was you.

Catspyjamas17 · 24/06/2023 03:34

It probably is something he had to do. But I'd be asking the supermarket what they are doing with my data, whether the individual drivers get to store and have access to my details etc.

pinkginfizz9 · 24/06/2023 04:28

Do you look very young? They require aa deliveries to be received by someone over 18.even if there are no restricted products

FannyBawz · 24/06/2023 05:43

Op that was incredibly naive of you
cheeky fucker needs sacked .

Batalax · 24/06/2023 06:21

Very dodgy

Do you think OP gave her passport details when she ordered? Otherwise what is he comparing it with?

EllaRaines · 24/06/2023 06:35

Just say I don't have a passport or driving licence and then say goodbye and shut the door.

Bournetilly · 24/06/2023 06:59

I’ve been asked for ID before and told that the system doesn’t tell them which items are restricted but they've never taken a photo of the ID, see what customer services has to say.

Stopsnowing · 24/06/2023 07:11

Complain and submit a data subject access request.

Stickybackplasticbear · 24/06/2023 07:16

I used to work in a supermarket doing deliveries you have to be over 18 to receive the delivery no matter the content. But I've never heard of taking a pic of a passport. I wouldn't be comfortable with this.

Shadesofscarlett · 24/06/2023 07:19

If they are taking pics of your passport how is this stored etc and for how long? That would be my concern.
