To think no teacher is affirming animal/moon/object genders

Greenpotatosoup · 23/06/2023 13:13

Surely no teacher in the UK would or could affirm a child who claimed to be a cat or a moon or any other sort of animal or object - eg letting them wear non-uniform, eat from bowl, disrupt learning with neo-pronoun requests. Just nonsense. This must be kids taking the piss and feeding bullshit to gullible journos.

I’ve also seen posters on here claiming their kid/cousin’s kid/neighbour’s goat breeder’s Auntie Sue’s best friend has first hand knowledge of this, and again I call bullshit. Bullshit. Any posters who say it’s not bullshit, get off here and write to Gillian Keegan, who explicitly requested examples of batshittery in schools at a recent select committee hearing, and name the school, and write to your local MP and ofsted too. But I think it’s just bullshit and teacher bashing.

YABU: I believe teachers ARE affirming cat/moon/anything genders

YANBU: I don’t believe any teacher would affirm an animal or object gender.

I understand there are strong views on here about transgender issues. My AIBU is not intended to be about that.

DD (Yr 9) sits next to a furry in some classes (this child identifies as a fox). DD has unfortunately been bitten (lightly) by said fox on more than one occasion and the school shrugged it off because that's how foxes express frustration. I was furious and asked if fox could perhaps be caged to keep the human-identifying pupils safe.

WahWahWahs · 24/06/2023 08:11

No animals/objects but I have 4 non-binary students in one of my classes. Two have changed their names (including on the register). We had a staff meeting announcement about each one telling us which pronoun to use and reminding us not to ‘deadname’ them.

JonahAndTheSnail · 24/06/2023 08:21

Surely if you're a cat, then you don't need an education, I wonder if we're a step away from making education optional. Also do these cat children shit in boxes and eat cat food? 😼

SeaSaltAir · 24/06/2023 08:30

A child in my daughters class identifies as a donkey. Came in handy at the school nativity last year.

Barbadossunset · 24/06/2023 08:33

Agree 100%... I also think it won't be long until the ones identifying as animals are going to start being offered surgery too to look more like their animal of choice.

I think that’s already happened. Does anyone remember the ‘Bride of Wildenstein’ who had extensive plastic surgery to make her look like a cat.

This is unbelievable!! Have you taken this further? Can’t believe the school is allowing this!!

It's not that they are saying a kid is a giraffe as much as they are saying that if a kid says he's a giraffe then that is how he identifies and it is rude, bigoted, to laugh, correct him, refuse to use his preferred pronouns, sorry, gee / raff's preferred pronouns

Add to that the third sex malarkey and you have a perfect shit storm of #BeKind woolly liberalism that does real harm.

Their belief is that trans people don't exist.

No. Those girls were far more logical than you are here.

Their belief is that human beings don't change sex or species.

Trans people exist. They don't change sex, or species.

Aka the truth.

IWillNoLie · 24/06/2023 09:48

Given even the BBC produced a Bitesize program saying their are 72 genders YABU.

I posted a link to her upthread.. Numerous surgeries to make herself appear more feline.. 😼

The thing about identities, be it a boy identifying as a girl, or a girl identifying as a cat, is it is not about self and how they feel - it is means to control the behaviour of everyone about them. A demand that YOU must behave in a certain way towards them. That YOU deny reality to uphold the fantasy they wish to impose.

ThatOnePlease · 23/06/2023 18:25

I think YANBU, and if this has happened or is happening, it's a handful of extreme cases.

Problem is, once you agree to affirm an identity at odds with material reality, there's no logical line to draw on what's a step too far.

Different race or ethnicity? Why not? It's no more impossible than insisting you can change your biological sex.

So how do you draft a coherent policy that says, you can change sex and must be always and only treated as your chosen sex - even though that is impossible in reality - but you can't change your ethnicity or your species for legal purposes?

If we have to believe people are who they say they are, then we have to believe that men can truly be women, a girl can be a cat, that Ollie London can be Korean. It's all the same.

I know it's been said 1,000 times but I've never understood how the Rachel Dolezal comparison isn't made more often and why there is any difference between the two

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 23/06/2023 19:31

Yabu. My cat identifies as a health visitor and gets extremely judgemental if I don't pick up newborn DD and soon as she cries. He even shouts at me angrily until I do.

😂😂😂

StephanieSuperpowers · 24/06/2023 10:15

Yes. And the Irish Times is all about the power of self identification to alter reality.

Yes just this! It's about attention..
I think it's becoming more obvious that identifying as a boy when you're a girl is the exact same as identifying as a cat, horse, unicorn, Santa Claus or as in Hilaria Baldwins case a Spaniard...
I do think the tide is turning & no identifies will continue to be pandered to...

It does hurt everybody else. I don't want to make my child lie every day because these over indulged kids (no, they are not lovely) insist on it. I hope they do not have a tolerant experience in secondary school. I hope someone pulls them up on this crap before they harm themselves with surgery or annoy everyone else so much they are social outcasts

And yet we are led to believe that everyone is capable of human traits such as tolerance, respect and kindness…

You got that right.. Lots of articles about Hilaria's non existent "Spanish roots" the Irish Times was the first that came up in google search

It's always rude to laugh at someone though.

Kids do weird shit, sometimes they want to be animals, sometimes they think they're vampires, sometimes they think they're witches. Sometimes it's just attention seeking, other times it's the kids who struggle socially who fall into these patterns. It's a phase. When I was younger everyone slightly alternative or not in the cool crowd was a goth.

In all cases, they are still deserving of respect and fair treatment, not laughing at or mockery, and teachers should rightly be pulling up other students for bullying.

I don't doubt that there are kids who want to be cats. I do think it's being blown way out of proportion though.

This is where this nonsense makes me properly angry. Pretending to unhappy children that they can change sex and it'll all go away is not kind. Telling them the truth and doing the painful work of accepting reality with them is kind and respectful. Encouraging them to believe that everyone will see them as they see themselves or else they hate them and want them dead is setting vulnerable young people up for a life of pain and feeling needlessly rejected. It's a horrible and cruel thing to do.

@Flickersy
Read this article.. Lots of adult furries & up until this week seemed to be very welcome in the lgbtq community according to this article here
https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/02/13/what-are-furries-furry/

I know what furries are. I'm not sure what that has to do with my post about it always being rude to laugh at and mock people.

whereaw · 24/06/2023 10:27

Identity claims are totally dependent on other people to acknowledge and affirm their validity, because without that they are nothing at all.

This is why the 'live and let live' argument is flawed. Because that is not what is being asked and the majority of people simply do not get that.

Like Satre says, hell is other people because you are always trapped in what they think of you - by the mere appearance of the other, I am put in the position of passing judgement on myself as an object, for it is an object that I appear to the other.
