To be fed up with ultra casual work wear

So I work in an office quite large about 30 people if everyone is in. Mostly there are fewer though. Hybrid working so only in 2-3 days. But I'm fed up with the ultra casual clothes they all wear. On my team there's a woman about 30 who wears skinny jeans and a jumper every day. Another wears leggings and a jumper every day. I like these women no worries but I have bought some nice clothes a few dresses and blazers but when I get up in the morning I feel like I will stick out too much if I wear them and end up
Wearing my old black trousers and some old top so I get in. It's my problem more than theirs. I want to look nice but chicken out. It seems to be a thing to wear the least flattering comfy clothes. Typing this am realizing I need to just wear what I want. But I want to fit in too !! Wish people would make a bit more of an effort. None of them wear make up or anything like that lol. Which is ok but makes me feel like a weirdo for putting on my mascara and lipstick lol. I guess IABU

Seriously, why wear make-up at work? It's completely pointless.

I think slobby clothes and no make up is different. I very rarely wear make up because I don't actually need it, I might occasionally wear lipgloss but that's about it.

What they wear is affecting me though that's the problem ! Maybe I should be asking for advice on being more confident. I feel like I stuck out like a sore thumb if I make any kind of effort with my appearance! We can be customer facing some days but mostly not.

I am with you 100%
We should wear smart casual, yet the 20 something wears tatty skinny jeans, and the 50 something wears beach party dresses that skim her arse. Literally floaty tiered dresses and flip flops. We are client facing too. The bosses joked with her once when she wore an Adidas track suit, but she is so dense she didn't take the hint, and carries on. I wear smarts every day but feel like a dick for bothering
The thing is, we are all on the same money, but these 2 behave like work experience girls and I and others have to pick up their slack

The OP doesn’t sound awful at all. Stop exaggerating. Workplaces should have dress codes/expectations.

Dress codes are only for Victorian workplaces. The rest of us have moved on thank goodness.

ThursdayFreedom · 22/06/2023 10:12

Work on your own self confidence instead of inflicting your desires on other peoples clothing, though gaps & make up.

just because one of them wears leggings everyday, doesn't give you the right to judge her about the 'same pair of leggings every day' as though she's unclean. You're just being nasty because you lack self confidence.

theemmadilemma · 22/06/2023 10:12

yadeciN · 22/06/2023 06:23

Yes you should be asking about your confidence. Because women have been told long enough what to wear for others' eyes and feelings....
That time is going. We can dress up if we want to, dress down if we want to.

This. Women of today are dressing for comfort, for themselves. And good on them!

But your issue is 100% yours. Find the confidence to just be who you are, and it's that dressed up and smart then do it and love it, just like they are!

Testina · 22/06/2023 10:13

You want us all to waste time and money on make up when we see nothing wrong with our faces, because you have some kind of hang up with just making your own choices?

No thanks.

Goingthere · 22/06/2023 10:14

You should wear what you want, I doubt anyone will take much notice.

@Fightyouforthatpie you are being ridiculous, or you clearly don't work in an office space. You should adhere to smart casual - not just something you have paid a lot for. The goons in my place wear Ugg boots FFS they are not smart

PimpMyFridge · 22/06/2023 10:15

Wow, are UGG boots back!? <Misses the point>

BansheeofInisherin · 22/06/2023 10:16

I take the Tube when I go into the office. No way am I sweltering in a blazer and stumbling up the elevators in heels. I don't need much makeup, but if I wore it, it would just melt off or end up on someone's shoulder pressed against me!

😂😂😂
They're expensive so ergo, they must be smart

Wittyname10 · 22/06/2023 10:18

Christ OP just wear what YOU want.

I wore shorts and a company polo shirt yesterday, my boss wore shirt/tie/trousers. I have a short sleeve shirt and trousers on today, hes turned up in shorts and a t-shirt.

Who cares?

Personally, unless I've got a meeting its comfort first, especially in this heat.

Shinyandnew1 · 22/06/2023 10:19

I can’t think of anything worse than wearing a blazer to work-that’s like being at high school! I’m a teacher and we have to be reasonably smart-ie no jeans/trainers leggings but I go for comfort-a dress and a pair of sandals/Birkenstocks. Just don’t wear the blazer if you think you’ll stand out.

Brefugee · 22/06/2023 10:21

if bosses can't boss properly, then of course the employee will continue wearing what she wants. FFS, the managers need to grow up and have a word if it is a problem for them. If not, none of your business.(Frankly, it's none of your business anyway)

theresnolimits · 22/06/2023 10:21

Just musing …I wonder how many people on here who think comfort dressing is important (and I agree) are really keen on school uniform. The exact opposite of comfort dressing. It seems to me that work life has moved on yet kids are still being dressed as if they came from the 50s.

Much of Europe and the US can’t believe how we dress our kids and I’d love to see uniform go the way of ‘office wear’.

Brefugee · 22/06/2023 10:23

there is currently a thread about school uniform in AIBU and i have mentioned this thread too.

The idea of a dress code or school uniform (outside of safety requirements or uniform requirements which should apply to very few jobs, IMO) is just bonkers.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 22/06/2023 10:26

In my social group, one friend dresses like the Mother of the Bride -silk two-pieces. The rest of us go from Seasalt/Boden down to gardening clothes. Throw on a nice jacket one day, OP and work up to fancier clothes. Why not? You might raise the whole standard of the place!
As for make-up, I think that one positive from Covid is that we aren't expected to wear make-up any more. People shouldn't have to, in order to look 'acceptable', and now I can go out without getting lipstick on a cup or glass, which I've always found disgusting. I now see e.g newsreaders and find myself thinking all that slap looks daft.

PimpMyFridge · 22/06/2023 10:27

Actually I think a school uniform is very helpful. It is an equaliser and very needed for those children whose parents don't have the money for clothes.
I was the child who dreaded non uniform day as my clothes were all 3rd hand (cousin, older sister, then me). I stuck out like a site thumb and took so much shit. The kids who could keep up with fashion could parade their superior social status and it is crap being at the bottom of the heap.
It still can happen to some extent with uniform, like which shoes, but it is far far less obvious and kids are brutal.
Keep school uniform.

Brefugee · 22/06/2023 10:30

that "levelling" thing about school uniform has been debunked so often i can't believe people are still trotting it out.
Bullies will bully, and if it's not clothes it is something else.

JazbayGrapes · 22/06/2023 10:31

That's some communist bullshit. It never worked then, it doesn't work now.

StormShadow · 22/06/2023 10:34

Also, school uniform can't be an equaliser when it's so often pointlessly expensive.

Missingthegore · 22/06/2023 10:45

You do you.
The joy of my office is nobody gives 2 figs.
This week I have worn a paco stripy jumper with wide leg trousers and my runners as my ankle is killing me, next day a seasalt A line dress and tights and runners today wide leg trousers and a Love and Roses blouse. Tomorrow is fun scrub Friday on some of my wards so I am joining in with a kola print scrub top. Not wearing the matching bottoms but a pair of black skinnies.
I am a Director of Nursing.
My peers range from full glam outfits to Kmart finest to scrubs every day.
Nobody gives a dam.
I don't wear make up, one of my colleagues wears a very tasteful full face.

waterrat · 22/06/2023 10:55

I work in a very scruffy profession but I just go in dressed smartly - I always wear skirt or dress and boots/ smart shoes, i feel good that way!

Personally can't understand people who come to work really scruffy - I note it's usually men who make the least effort as feel they can get away with it.

but - why not just be confident in yourself to wear what makes you feel good and focused.

waterrat · 22/06/2023 10:56

I think a relaxed school uniform can actually be levelling - my kids are in a state school with no uniform and it presents its own problems in terms of affordable versus trendy/ expensive clothing.

Well tell them no. You’re the boss, you set the dress code - tell them Uggs are inappropriate and you won’t allow it anymore.

Unless I’ve misunderstood somehow and you’re not actually the boss, and it’s not actually your business.
