To be fed up with ultra casual work wear

So I work in an office quite large about 30 people if everyone is in. Mostly there are fewer though. Hybrid working so only in 2-3 days. But I'm fed up with the ultra casual clothes they all wear. On my team there's a woman about 30 who wears skinny jeans and a jumper every day. Another wears leggings and a jumper every day. I like these women no worries but I have bought some nice clothes a few dresses and blazers but when I get up in the morning I feel like I will stick out too much if I wear them and end up
Wearing my old black trousers and some old top so I get in. It's my problem more than theirs. I want to look nice but chicken out. It seems to be a thing to wear the least flattering comfy clothes. Typing this am realizing I need to just wear what I want. But I want to fit in too !! Wish people would make a bit more of an effort. None of them wear make up or anything like that lol. Which is ok but makes me feel like a weirdo for putting on my mascara and lipstick lol. I guess IABU

Oh, how I wish this wasn’t unusual.

100% this

your self image issues are not their problem. Everyone deserves to dress comfortably.

@wildfirewonder nobody would be dressing to please the OP. Workplaces should have dress codes (I) relevant to the work environment, for several reasons (II) because it avoids the confusion that the OP is referring to and (III) as it inspires confidence among the consumer/client/service user.

There's clearly no confusion other than for the OP since everyone else seems to know how to dress themselves for work.

Quiverer · 22/06/2023 09:00

Seriously, why wear make-up at work? It's completely pointless.

TiaraBoo · 22/06/2023 09:03

Wear what you want, you might find others then wanting to dress up a bit more!

This happened to exDH, he carried on wearing smartish shirts and ties after their dress code was relaxed to get use out of them and the other men thought they had to up their game and started wearing them too 😂

I always wore nice outfits to work. Had a great dress collection, lovely shoes. Always bought good stuff, too. The other women I worked with wore black polyester trousers & a top / jumper. Even a shumper, God forbid… Didn’t stop me!

Can’t imagine what it’s like nowadays. I will say there was plenty of misogyny in the office back in my day. And I would get unwanted attention from male bosses. Women choosing not to wear make-up / short skirts / frocks is fine with me.

What's a shumper?

Clearly casual is relevant to this work environment. OP works somewhere where the consumer/client/service user neither knows nor cares what she wears. As for confusion, OP seems to be the only one affected so why should everyone else change what they wear?

BCCoach · 22/06/2023 09:04

I go by the “dress how your CEO does” rule. So I’m wearing Tevas, combat shorts and an old band t-shirt.

Tech, if it wasn’t obvious.

Brefugee · 22/06/2023 09:04

i wear make up at work because i prefer how my face works when i can see that i have eyelashes. So i use a very good quality mascara, and "put on" eyebrows because since i went grey, my eyes weird, as if i have no eyebrows.

But that is my preference. If i don't have time, or i can't be bothered, i don't. But i usually do, even for wfh.

I am liking this new world where people work in what they are comfortable in. (one of our partners wears flip flops but won't wear shorts because he hates his legs.)

What they wear is affecting me though that's the problem ! Maybe I should be asking for advice on being more confident. I feel like I stuck out like a sore thumb if I make any kind of effort with my appearance! We can be customer facing some days but mostly not.

It's not. You are the issue. Wear what you want within the dress code. Judge your colleagues on their work not their appearance.

It's a personal choice

Fizbosshoes · 22/06/2023 09:07

I work in a practical/creative job. Today I have some denim shorts, a tshirt and birkenstock style sandals. (Sometimes I wear flip flops) One colleague will likely be wearing tshirt shorts and sandals, another usually wears a shirt and tailored shorts.

The UK makes me laugh with the school uniforms and formal clothing in offices, especially in offices where no one sees you.
You should be able to dress in what you like, including leggings and strappy tops.

This.

The dress code was the worst thing about working there. Whether I wear makeup and a dress or jeans and jumper with no makeup (I never wear makeup), it doesn't affect my working ability or skills. Let people be comfortable.

Fizbosshoes · 22/06/2023 09:08

Most of my colleagues are men and none wear make up, I don't either!

GettingStuffed · 22/06/2023 09:09

I once did some monitoring of calls (call centre job) as to whether clothing made any difference to the quality of work in normal dress code or dress down Friday and there was no discernible difference. Unless you're customer facing wear what you want.

darkmodeon · 22/06/2023 09:10

She's very slim and has a big thigh gap tho (trying not to be jealous lol)

This is incredibly unprofessional of you. Grow up

But you wouldn’t really. If you start wearing smarter clothes, people might notice for a day or 2. After that, they’ll just take it for granted that you’re the smart one and not give it a second thought.

georgarina · 22/06/2023 09:15

Where I work you can wear whatever you want. I don't think people will care. In my team there were people who wore joggers and old charity t's, and people who wore dresses and heels.

pointythings · 22/06/2023 09:19

Our office is dress for your day. I am NHS admin. I am delighted with the move away from formality, it's high time the UK caught up. Work is about what you do, not what you look like.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 22/06/2023 09:20

Greenshake · 22/06/2023 00:56

The OP doesn’t sound awful at all. Stop exaggerating. Workplaces should have dress codes/expectations.

But this one clearly doesn’t have a dress code (or at least has a very casual one), so it’s irrelevant. No workplace has a dress code because you, the OP or anyone else is thinks they “should”.

And frankly, I think it is pretty awful to bitch about your colleagues not choosing to wear what YOU think they should wear.

phoenixrosehere · 22/06/2023 09:30

No. You are choosing to allow what they wear (which isn’t any of your business) to affect you.

You are right though about your confidence. You should focus on being confident in wearing what you want (within company guidelines) and not looking around to see what everyone else is wearing. Some people have different comfort levels or views on what they want and should wear to work so people dress to that.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 22/06/2023 09:45

What they wear is affecting me though that's the problem !

Not THE problem - YOUR problem.

BansheeofInisherin · 22/06/2023 09:48

I love that everyone is more casual. I don't wear heels or makeup or any of that stuff. I am clean and presentable; that should be enough.

Why are you scrutinising her thigh gap?

WunWun · 22/06/2023 09:49

Btw, its not 2005. Thigh gaps aren't desirable.

A lot of us do get this. If nothing else, climate change is smacking us round the head with it. The biggest issue now is schools, I think.
