...On his fucking Xbox in the past year. I'm furious. Absolutely furious.

I regret to inform you that there is a massive crossover between men (and women) who solve crosswords and play chess and those who play computer games.

Data to support that statement please.

Colourfingers2 · 19/06/2023 17:39

What does a grown adult want with playing video games anyway?
He needs therapy.

Yes! Where did you get that idea? Never play video games but spend a lot of time playing chess

Outdamnspot23 · 19/06/2023 17:41

Well done OP you've made absolutely the right decision here. Sadly the world is full of lovely but essentially useless men (I'd include those who rely on booze/drugs/other harmful things) and I'm glad you're not tethering your fortunes to his any more. That life is just one long disappointment or you give up and get into all the same problems yourself.

Survey99 · 19/06/2023 17:41

Sorry you are going through this, but you have done the right thing @Itssnotunusual . Stay strong and don't ever forgot how you feel right now.

He is not a partner you and your son can rely on, instead he will add extra stress to your life and suck out the joy as he lurches from one immature fixation to the next while he avoids being an actual responsible adult.

You can't change him, but you can change your and your sons future prospects.

It will be tough to start with but will be worth it, all the best for your new and better future.

Anyone else get the ick from grown men being this obsessed with computer games😑
@vitahelp

I think it would be fine for a chap to have an occasional go at playing with his child on a computer game but to play it on his own is just odd.

Give me a man who can do a crossword and play chess, any day!

I personally would get the ick more from someone who was obsessed with chess and crosswords than computer gaming.

I would get the ick with anyone who found it acceptable to spend thousands on their hobby whilst their family went without.

GulesMeansRed · 19/06/2023 17:51

Because it's fun and it's a hobby. Your statement makes as much sense as saying "what does a grown adult want with doing jigsaws" or "cycling" or "painting watercolours" or "going geocaching".

Nope, playing Diablo IV with my husband this evening - those demons won't kill themselves :)

Like any hobby, it's about balancing time spent doing that with other things that need to be done.

itsmylife7 · 19/06/2023 17:53

What a brave decision OP for you and your son. Sorry you've ended up with a loser.

Let all who read this and think that wouldn't happen to me.....it can and will if you stay in or start a relationship with an 'addict ' be it booze, weed, gambling etc.

Take heed of all the posts like this where Women and children are let down by this type of man.

So glad you've got a supportive family OP.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 19/06/2023 17:58

So sorry you've had to go through this OP. Best letting go now rather than when you're joint home owners or married.

Have a look at the two year deal between the Twitch video game streaming service and Chess.com. Chess is the single fastest-growing game on Twitch. The official Chess channel has 2.4M followers and right now there are 4.3k people watching a live match.

Or if you really want to shag a loser insist he uses a condom.

Sorry, don't know how to quote but the above should be taught in all schools.

And to add the Xbox should end up in the garden, via an upstairs window.

I was going to suggest giving it a good clean with a pressure washer, but your suggestion is a lot less hassle.

user1471538283 · 19/06/2023 18:47

I'm so happy you are getting rid of him. That is a big family holiday or a big home improvement whilst you are being extra careful.

My ex was (probably still is) a gambler. He would easily spent £100 an hour, all night most nights. Whilst I worried about paying bills and was expected to cut back. I had nothing to cut back on.

Itssnotunusual · 19/06/2023 18:47

The images of destroying his beloved Xbox are cathartic but I wouldn't do that. Also couldn't as he took it with him when he packed his stuff. I imagine he's either gone to his friends house or his mum's.

I'm tempted to ask for the controllers back though, since I bought them.

Selfish men who prioritise an obsession or addiction over their family, sure, but this tedious MN line on video games is very ignorant and pretty embarrassing. ‘Computer games’ are a whole medium. You might as well say that you get the ‘ick’ from men who read books or watch films.

Why kick a woman when she’s down.

It is not OPs fault.

It is very common for people to seem great and then change a few years later.

No, because i'm a grown woman who's obsessed with computer games.. its a valid hobby

The 'ick' is over the financial lying, obfuscation and overspending, not the hobby.
