To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

1000 replies

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

@PencilsInSpace - not at all misinformation - I think you need to do your homework before having at go at people for not agreeing with your viewpoint

Please provide evidence for this statement:

the NHS is currently changing the guidelines to say that vaping is just as dangerous to health as smoking is

You won't be able to because it's not true.

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 19:34

@Tandora - actually what is dangerous and irresponsible is smoking and vaping! To those that do it and other people who have no choice but to breathe in that shit!

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 19:35

@U2HasTheEdge - ha ha that is too funny! You can guarantee that she has done her homework? Yeah right ok!!!!

She has literally posted her homework Confused
Like, we can actually see it

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 19:36

@PencilsInSpace - I can very much guarantee it is true - I keep providing evidence to you but you just saying it is rubbish because you don't like what I am saying!

PencilsInSpace · 03/03/2025 19:52

You don't have any evidence for this statement, do you?

the NHS is currently changing the guidelines to say that vaping is just as dangerous to health as smoking is

Are you listening? Vaping is nothing like as harmful to others as smoking, so why are you pretending they are the same?

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 20:37

@Tandora - are you not listening??!! Of course it is!!

Wait. Are you actually trying to pretend that someone vaping next to you has the same impact as someone smoking next to you?

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 21:08

@Tandora - eh????

Tandora · 03/03/2025 21:13

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 21:08

@Tandora - eh????

Are you pretending that passive vaping is as harmful as passive smoking?

Cancer research write this:

*Is passive vaping harmful?

There is no good evidence that second-hand vapour from e-cigarettes is harmful. As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. But this is unlikely to be harmful.
Passive vaping is not the same as passive smoking. This is because e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco.*

Are you trying to pretend this isn’t the case?

What is passive smoking?

Passive smoking means breathing in other people’s tobacco smoke. All passive smoking is unsafe. Find out more from Cancer Research UK.

That makes no sense, it just says they don't know yet. Probably the same way doctors used to smoke on the ward because 'it did no harm'. But yeah I'm sure inhaling random chemical's into your body will have absolutely no affect

What cancer research says makes no sense? And kings college London, and UCL.and the NHS.
okey-dokey then 😹.

Enjoy your tin foil hat theories about the “random chemicals” you are inhaling that are obviously as harmful as passively inhaling tobacco despite there being no evidence of this and no reason for thinking so , but please at the very least stop spreading them on the internet

Mybusyday · 03/03/2025 21:34

@Tandora - but you just contradicted yourself there with your 'evidence' - it actually says that they can't be sure of the effects!!!! Random!

Wtf are you on? You make absolutely no sense. It literally says in your post that it's too early to tell so you can't claim it's research. Obviously there's chemicals in vapes, heres a few for example....
Nicotine: A highly addictive chemical that can harm brain development
Propylene glycol: A common additive in food that's also used in antifreeze, paint solvent, and artificial smoke
Vegetable glycerin: Used in cosmetics and in e-liquids
Flavorings: Some flavorings may be safe to eat but not to inhale
Heavy metals: Such as nickel, tin, and lead
Carcinogens: Such as acetaldehyde and formaldehyde
Acrolein: A herbicide that can cause irreversible lung damage
Diacetyl: A chemical linked to a lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as "popcorn lung"
Diethylene glycol: A toxic chemical used in antifreeze that is linked to lung disease

it says we can’t be sure there are no effects but it’s an absolute lie to pretend that the evidence suggests that passive vaping is anything like as dangerous as passive smoking. all the evidence says the opposite, because although you may breathe in nicotine you don’t breathe in combustion toxins like tobacco

It’s really really wrong to be promoting these lies. We have found a product that radically reduces the social harms of smoking and yet people are coming after it as if it were the same, and undoing the massive potential benefits to public health if more people were to switch to vaping from smoking. It makes my blood boil.

Tandora · 03/03/2025 21:42

To any lurkers reading this thread. Please read the peer review research and not the tin foil hat theorists on this thread.

Bamboozledbylife · 03/03/2025 21:49

You've replaced one additiction with another. You're choice.
But I do object to all of the ignorant twats who insist on blowing out the smelly chemical crap in shops, on buses, pubs, restaurants, selling to kids etc. I don't want to vape nor do I want your second hand chemicals or your plastic crap all over...

CrunchyChocolate · 03/03/2025 21:49

I have 2 good air purifiers in my house, set to "auto". Cigarette smoke makes it go crazy. Hairspray, deodorant, even using the hairdryer also have a bad effect on the air quality. Vaping? Nada. Or maybe air purifier manufacturers are in cahoots with the vape industry? 🙄

Tryagainplease · 03/03/2025 22:03

Wtf are you on? You make absolutely no sense. It literally says in your post that it's too early to tell so you can't claim it's research

It made absolute perfect sense to me.

Can you honestly not tell the difference between these two statements;

”As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. But this is unlikely to be harmful”

AND

“There are definitely long term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour”

POPCORN LUNG!!! 😱

Not again, FFS 🙄

Tryagainplease · 03/03/2025 22:07

What is so hard to understand about this:

  1. smoking is harmful to health
  2. vaping is less harmful to your health than smoking based on current research and is a very effective smoking cessation tool
  3. doing neither is optimum

Worst, better and best. Literally in that order.

I can’t wait for this thread to fill up. It’s honestly like trying to reason with a three year old.

Gcsunnyside23 · 03/03/2025 22:17

Look in my opinion it's just other crap in another package. Yeah it might not be as bad as cigarettes but it's not good either and it annoys me off people claiming it's actually beneficial, blah blah. Why can't people just enjoy it if they want and stop going on and on that's it's so much better than smoking, people drinking alcohol don't go on and on about how good drinking one kind of alcohol is better than another. If you want to do it then fine but I don't have to agree that it's good for you, in fact it triggers my asthma just as much as cigarettes so to me it's all shit, actually it's worse because people do it indoors as well
