To think the parents of children who are in childcare would like to see them more often?

I CM and have several sets of parents who finish work early on many occasions who never collect their child early. I know I am paid and it does not bother me in the slightest to look after them for their agreed hours, I just feel sorry for the child because they are missing out on this extra time with parents who work full time.

I was a working mum for 3 months (as in not CM) but always collected dd early when I finished early because I wanted to spend time with her. AIBU?

No what i said was, first ask if they can afford it, then ask them about the choice of childcare.

NiceTry · 23/02/2008 21:39

Bethelsie - I've had a bet with dh we can get there (to 1000) before 10pm!

tori32 · 23/02/2008 21:39

MrsHighwater I would send mine to another good CM if I wasn't such a good one myself . As I have already said, I don't disapprove of people having the odd early finish and getting essentials done, just when its every other day and the parents work full time.

I send dd to nursery 2 mornings per week because it does her good to not be with me 24/7, however, if she had to go to nursery for 40hrs per week, I would pick up early if I finished early because I wouldn't view that as seeing her enough IYSWIM.

There are thousands of jobs tht pay a pittance. Take a good look at your clothes, it was probably made by a little boy in a sweatshop. That doesnt stop a lot of people buying it.

viggoswife · 23/02/2008 21:39

You got me andie. However in my reality as a former child minder and a mother I am right.

Elffriend · 23/02/2008 21:40

What happens when we get to 1000? Does a bell ring or something?

Can we start a new row?

chelsygirl · 23/02/2008 21:40

nursery workers get sometimes as little as £6.25 an hour and can work 10 hour days with hardly any breaks (I know its against the law, it happens.................)and often are young girls who haven't much experience with a variety of kids

some are great with kids, others treat it as just a job (which it is) and don't give it much enthusiasm

thats the truth

alfiesbabe · 23/02/2008 21:40

'Nurseries obviously don't value the work of their employees (minimum wage etc.) How does that make you feel as a parent using these facilities? '

NiceTry - it made me feel that I wished more of the fees paid could go on wages rather than other overheads.

And your point is........???

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 23/02/2008 21:41

nicetry they pay the going rate in a market economy you could say that about many jobs nursing teaching etc etc
how do you feel about the fact that the midwife who deliverd your dcs is paid infintely less than a footballer for example

very poor line of argument

MsHighwater · 23/02/2008 21:42

NiceTry, you're just wilfully misunderstanding what I said, aren't you?

NiceTry · 23/02/2008 21:42

Bethelsie - but would you let 'a little boy in sweat shop' mind your kids.

chelsygirl · 23/02/2008 21:42

mshighwater, believe what you like

then spend a month working in your childs nursery 9 hours a day

might change your mind

bethelsie · 23/02/2008 21:42

yeh but it happens in all jobs. Im teacher and ive worked with really crap ones before. Thats the way of the world.

Lets all chuck rocks at people whose DCs are in nursery, shit parents the lot of them

bethelsie · 23/02/2008 21:43

I would, if he didnt cost as much as a bloody nursery.

blueshoes · 23/02/2008 21:44

chelsygirl, I believe you are an ex-child carer. Can YOU afford ft nursery for your dcs?

It is clear from the parental profile at my nursery that it is very unlikely that nursery workers will be able to afford it. Sad, but true. Anyway, a person who is in childcare would surely by definition prefer to look after their child during the day - it just goes with the territory. That's a perfectly valid choice. To ask if they would use ft childcare at another nursery is just counter-intuitive.

Rhubarb · 23/02/2008 21:44

I've got a headache now.

Elffriend · 23/02/2008 21:45

Nearly there.

exciting innit. Are we stil arguing?

NiceTry · 23/02/2008 21:45

andie - nurses, teachers and midwives get paid much more than nursery workers. Hard to put a value on any caring profession IMHO but it is a fact that they are very low paid in comparison to the others you mentioned.

chelsygirl · 23/02/2008 21:46

blueshoes, I wouldn't even consider it, even if I was married to a millionaire

MsHighwater · 23/02/2008 21:46

chelsygirl, I asked you if you had evidence to support what you imply. You said "believe what you like".

Emm, that would be a "no" then, would it?

blueshoes · 23/02/2008 21:47

Final word: xenia is right

coastalmum · 23/02/2008 21:47

I have read some but not all 39 pages of this thread.

But for the record I work in a nursery, I currently have 1 attending the nursery I work in, my youngest is on the waiting list. It isn't the cheapest nursery but it is the best, thats why I work there and thats why my kids go there.

I was a parent at the said nursery for 3 yrs before I changed careers and joined the nursery. I now have excellnt childcare, a job I love and a much needed income.

My children don't get any preferential treatment, I would leave if they did.
