To get a windchime??

tattygrl · 15/06/2023 15:03

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

You are also slagging me off to the elastic band lady.

😂😂😂 not paying attention to people’s usernames is well and truly biting me in the proverbial behind 😳🫣😩😂

Might have ElasticBandLady as my next username 🤣

I have a lovely neighbour. She is very genuinely lovely.

HOWEVER ...

Lovely neighbour has windchimes on her balcony (i.e. unless I take climbing lessons, I can't get to them or the problem would have been "solved" by now). I politely mentioned that the chimes were disturbing our sleep in the summer, so she agreed to take them in and put them out when they were there. Sadly, it seems she forgets more often than not. Including when she's out all day and I am the only person hearing the bloody binky bonging. Or when they go out to a restaurant. Or when they go on holiday for a week.

At the f opposite who always cuts his grass at lunchtime can't do that non-stop or in the middle of the night.

Love a windchime.
Admittedly I'm a bit of a cunt (and partially deaf too).

As long as you and Mrs. LongGarden stop slapping me with it 😂

I like windchimes, loop them up when I’m not in the garden.
I live in an area with children playing loudly and yelling, teenagers, motorbikes, vans and barbecues.
Live and let live. They can put up with the occasional melodious chime if they can hear it above their children squabbling.

NorthStarRising · 15/06/2023 16:52

I personally think anyone how intentionally puts a noisy thing in their garden and makes all the neighbours listen to it is unreasonable.

Children
Dogs
Loud music in the summer.

Love wind chimes.

They remind me of my nan. Get some!

YABU. You’re literally buying something that makes noises others have no choice about.

Better not sneeze in your garden either then. Ffs. Get the wind chime. It’s hardly a Pneumatic Drill!

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 15/06/2023 16:55

Windchimes are one of those things that the owner enjoys and other people find blood curdlingly annoying.

Like yapping dogs. Kids bouncing on trampolines higher than the fence. Or kids' footballs banging against said fence. Did I mention the yapping dogs?

Put out your windchimes and enjoy. Why should you be denied? I recommend Woodstock wind chimes which are wonderfully melodic (and expensive)

No, it’s worse because it’s constant. Users of pneumatic drills stop after a while and are very seldom in urban gardens using their drills at 3 a.m.

Just realized wind chimes are passive aggressive revenge for all the annoyances from the neighbors 😂

When I was informed by Mrs. Long Garden I had presented evidence (she called it slagging) of Elastic Band Lady’s impoliteness to Elastic Band Lady herself mistakenly thinking Mrs. Long Garden was Elastic Band Lady and that Elastic Band Lady was a random commenter I was trying to persuade, when in fact Mrs. Long Garden was the random commenter who also had a long garden and a wind chime at the bottom of it, I literally spit out my drink and no it wasn’t an alcoholic one but maybe my next one should be 😄

musicforthesoul · 15/06/2023 17:14

I don't like them much but they're hardly the most anti social thing in the world.

It would be unreasonable to have them next to your neighbours bedroom or sounding constantly if you know your neighbour dislikes them but your compromise sounds good.

Susuwatariandkodama · 15/06/2023 17:19

I wouldn’t ask that question on here, people will call you a devil for being so inconsiderate to your neighbours!

gamerchick · 15/06/2023 15:06

Might be worth getting 2 for when someone destroys the first one you put up.

🤣

garlicandsapphires · 15/06/2023 17:26

I am surprised at the hatred for windchimes.
I was thinking of getting some (some small ones, does that make a difference?) after hearing them in a friend's garden. I think they're beautiful!

CockyTeeHunz4Eva · 15/06/2023 17:50

My neighbour at my last house had a wind chime. I LOVED it. I found it so soothing. However, the level of hatred that the neighbour the other side had for that wind chime almost resulted in a full on fight!

I would say any sound in your garden while you are there and able to temper it as needed if someone is stressed by it: fine. If it will be there whether you are home or not: probably a bit U. I'd make a special hook for it by the back door, and put it out when you are in your garden, then take it back in when you aren't. You don't really know what might cause stress to someone.

LlynTegid · 15/06/2023 17:53

If they cannot be heard by anyone else, such as a remote farm, then lovely. Otherwise not.

Doggydarling · 15/06/2023 17:55

Please link to the one you're coveting, I'm thinking of getting one but haven't seen any nice ones, don't worry o live rurally, no neighbours to annoy.

45387pob · 15/06/2023 17:57

Why would you? Why? Just why? Why do you feel you have the right to inflict a sound you like onto everyone around you? So fucking selfish.

Ocularpatdown · 15/06/2023 17:58

I hate the things, can never understand why people can be so inconsiderate. No different to playing music in your garden 24\7.

TheDogsMother · 15/06/2023 17:59

Please don't. I had a neighbour with one and it drove me mad. Just listen to the lovely sound of birdsong instead.
