To get a windchime??

tattygrl · 15/06/2023 15:03

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

😂The bottom of my garden backs onto to the Forest and my garden is huge. No people at all near the bottom of my garden 😂.

So then why did you say you put a band around them to not disturb anyone’s sleep, and you emphasized that they can’t be heard from your house so whose sleep did you think would be disturbed? Not yours. So who?

“I often put a band round them of an evening/night so they don't disturb anyone's sleep (not that you can hear them from the house)”

Erm, that wasn't me.

Avondale89 · 15/06/2023 16:19

I love them. I’d rather listen to them than the neighbours screaming kids and barking dogs. However I haven’t bought one because I live in a terraced house and don’t want to piss anyone off. I’d bring them in at night/when it’s v windy if you’re going to buy one.

RuthW · 15/06/2023 16:19

If you were my neighbour your wind chime would go missing in the middle of the night

MrsJHarker · 15/06/2023 16:21

Also, mine (disappointingly) doesn't really chime very often and it's only small. It's in a spot that doesn't get any wind. So I'm afraid I'm not even really a cunt. My neighbours makes more noise but I like it.

You've made a huge assumption there. The way our houses are configured they're not near anyone's houses thanks, but you go on making up your own narrative.

Who is the ‘anyone’ then whose sleep can be disturbed, considering she said it can’t be heard from her house?

She conveniently comes back and gives info that excuses it but doesn’t reconcile with what she said before. That’s not an assumption in my part.

MrsJHarker · 15/06/2023 16:22

It's quite a pathetic little thing but my Dad bought it for me from his holidays and it's pretty.

Stopandlook · 15/06/2023 16:22

They grate my ears but I have kids and a trampoline so can’t really complain

MrsJHarker · 15/06/2023 16:23

@MysteryBelle Why are being an idiot?

I'm not the elastic band lady.

Erm, that wasn't me.

Then why did you reply as if it had been you….I didn’t see your name, good grief, my post wasn’t even directed at you then so why did you act as if it had been…saying you had the long garden and so forth, so neither my post nor the one I talked about has anything to do with you.

God they're annoying. There are even loads at the cemetery I visit now - imagine trying to peacefully think of your loved one with all that jangling going on.

Defo out of order having them in a cemetery.

Chill!

Mind your own business.

You’re the one who couldn’t chill and had to take what I said personally to you even though I wasn’t talking to you, and kept on making posts about. Just mine your own business.

I replied because I said earlier that mine was at the end of my big garden and then you accused the other poster of putting away from her house and nearer to other peoples.

Not everyone has people overlooking their gardens.

Please don’t. My parents have wind chimes (isolated detached house, no chance a neighbour will hear them). After one incredibly disturbed night the first time I visited after they got them, my Dad agreed to stick an elastic band around them for the duration of my visits.

ApplesInTheSunshine · 15/06/2023 16:31

YABU and I would cut it down.

(Un)fortunately this is out of date by several years... they got so close as well 😜

This is hilarious 😀😄

If you want to be the hated neighbour on the street, go ahead.

Fattygettingthinner · 15/06/2023 16:34

It’s the Constantness of it that’s the issue. Using them like you’d have music or make other noise in the garden is one thing. Having them make noise 24/7 is what drives folks up the wall.

CatkinToadflax · 15/06/2023 16:41

Oh dear God please don't. We have a weird shaped garden and back onto ten other houses. I therefore have no idea which of our neighbours have recently oh-so-kindly purchased a set of windchimes and apparently plonked them at the very bottom of their garden. During the day I don't mind at all, but being repeatedly woken up at 3am by Tubular Fucking Bells is not fun. 😡

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 15/06/2023 16:44

FFS, I'm the "elastic band lady". You can't hear the wind chimes up at the house during the day as it's a long garden and there's lots of other noise going on (and as I said, very little breeze). The reason I sometimes put a band round them at night is because the environment is quieter and 'just in case' there's a wind at night. I realise people have their windows open at night in this weather and I'm just doing it as a precaution.

@MysteryBelle The only reason I "conveniently came back and gave info that excuses it" is because you made up your own narrative about the situation and I was clarifying. As I'm also doing here because you've taken it upon yourself to have an argument with another poster. You're more highly strung than my wind chimes are!

The broad consensus definitely seems to be about the constantness of wind chimes that are left out permanently, particularly overnight, so I defo won't be doing that. I think I'm going to haul them out and pop them up on a day I fancy enjoying my garden, and then putting them up inside somewhere the rest of the time - that way if I fancy hearing them, I can jingle them myself 😄
