To get a windchime??

tattygrl · 15/06/2023 15:03

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

We have the Woodstock Neptune. It is very deep toned, not tinkly at all. The Woodstock chimes are tuned to a scale , not just random clanking.

DH bought one for me twenty years ago , it has been in four gardens since then, and no one has ever commented except to ask us where we got it. We just bought Earth to go with it, slightly higher pitch. We do have quite large gardens, and they are hung well away from other peoples houses.

I don’t know why the above is in italics 🙊.
go for it.

YABU unless you live in the arse end of nowhere

Fairyliz · 15/06/2023 15:41

I expect my neighbours to make a noise in their garden during the day time and the occasional late night in the summer. That’s to be expected living in the suburbs.
But wind chimes clanging and tinkling all through the night, no that’s too much.

ActDottie · 15/06/2023 15:41

Please do put a wind home up! I’m considering getting one as they’re so beautiful and I’m looking at making a corner of my garden into a little magical area

Plunkplink · 15/06/2023 15:41

The only way with this is you make it so that it is hung under your bedroom window and ‘switch it off’ when you are not actively listening to it.

my kids have had disturbed nights with what sounds like a sheet metal works going all night next door.

Maddy70 · 15/06/2023 15:46

Please dont. I literally moved house because of next doors.

Couldn't have the windows open at night because of their bloody wind chime.

Good tip if you don't like your neighbours.

WhoWants2Know · 15/06/2023 15:48

I love them. There's a gorgeous sounding one that keeps popping up on my facebook ads

Cinnamope · 15/06/2023 15:51

only if you don’t mind your neighbours hating you

Had you asked them to take them down or anything? If you did and they refused, that's so inconsiderate. FWIW I am erring on the side of caution and am only going to hang them outside if I can find a spot where the wind only gets them very occasionally. I love the idea of hearing a lovely low resonant chiming at odd moments, but don't want to cause people to suffer/have them chiming all the time, given how much some people clearly struggle with the noise.

Awful things so it depends if you like your neighbours.
I have a puppy that barks at everything and kids that love the trampoline so we are not in our neighbours good books at the best of times but wind chimes are a cruel sort of punishment.

Windchimes are one of those things that the owner enjoys and other people find blood curdlingly annoying. If you must get one and hang it where other people can hear it, don’t leave it up all the time - just hang it out sometimes when you are out in the garden.

This is a good compromise. I wanted to like wind chimes people would give us as presents, as I like chimes in theory, but the sound is blood curdling as poster said.

Get the chimes because you want them so much and it’s your heart’s desire but don’t leave them out all the time. Take them out into the garden sometimes then take them back in.

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 15/06/2023 16:02

I love the large metal ones with the deep resonant sound and I've got one myself at the end of my long garden. I admitted this on the other thread and got called all sorts of selfish. However there's barely any breeze at the end of my garden so they only chime once in a while. I often put a band round them of an evening/night so they don't disturb anyone's sleep (not that you can hear them from the house), and they're only out in the summer.

Beside that, if I have to endure frequent power tools, barking dogs, screeching kids (that can't play without screaming at the top of their voices), late night parties etc from various neighbours, then it doesn't bother me if there's occasionally a little noise coming from my garden.

I'd rather listen to a windchime than screaming kids - I have no control over those either...

You conveniently put your windchime at the very end of your long garden so that you couldn’t hear them from your house and get annoyed but made sure to put it nearer neighbors’ houses.

That is way out of order! Most impolite 😳

😂The bottom of my garden backs onto to the Forest and my garden is huge. No people at all near the bottom of my garden 😂.

mummymeister · 15/06/2023 16:10

Anything which you do on or in your own property which is clearly audible in your neighbours and where the duration of the noise is more than a few minutes every day could be a Statutory Noise Nuisance. I have taken prosecutions for noisy pond pumps and against someone who was something of a wind chime collector. Its unreasonable. dont whinge when they do things you dont like in retaliation because this is EXACTLY how neighbour disputes start. having dealt with them for 20 years as an EHO I can tell you that when this happens everyone is a loser. just dont, unless you live in the arse end of nowhere.

MrsJHarker · 15/06/2023 16:10

Also, neighbour on right has one and neighbour on left is bedridden and has not been to the bottom of garden for about 4 years. He has a gardener.

Twillow · 15/06/2023 16:13

God they're annoying. There are even loads at the cemetery I visit now - imagine trying to peacefully think of your loved one with all that jangling going on.

You've made a huge assumption there. The way our houses are configured they're not near anyone's houses thanks, but you go on making up your own narrative.
