To get a windchime??

tattygrl · 15/06/2023 15:03

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

I hate them. Don't do it.

MsMollie · 15/06/2023 15:15

I have a wind chime, it's in my summerhouse and I only hang it outside when I'm using my garden. A lovely sound against the background of neighbours noise. Kids, balls, loud men, the psycho dog next door, trampolines.

sparkleice · 15/06/2023 15:14

inspired?

oh, were you trying to be funny?

Is there an issue?

The post about neighbour's windchime reminded me of the doubts I've had about putting one up myself, so I thought I'd make an AIBU post to get a sense of how unpopular or not they are. No offence intended!

I hate wind chimes. Children playing, dogs barking, people chatting, lawnmowers, barbecues etc. are all fine. I don’t expect silence. But wind chimes bother me. It’s like I’m just tensed up, waiting for next gust of wind to set it off again.

Even if the noise itself is nice, I don’t want to hear it at the whim of the wind. I like Skittles, but I wouldn’t want to be forcefed skittles every time it rained.

Topseyt123 · 15/06/2023 15:16

I love wind chimes and find them very relaxing. I'm always interested in the extreme reactions they seem to provoke on here. 🤣

I have two sets of my own which are hung just inside the back door and the patio doors at the rear of my house. They only chime sporadically when either or both of those doors are open on a warm day and a breeze triggers them.

JeminaPudd · 15/06/2023 15:17

No you'll be hated

No. I think that despite what appears on here few people actually give a shit.

fireflyloo · 15/06/2023 15:21

My neighbour has one. I don't like the sound but my dh hates it. It's out the back near to our garden so at night time we hear it a lot. Dh and I often can't agree on our window being open as he can't sleep with the noise and I can't sleep with the heat 😭

MrsJHarker · 15/06/2023 15:23

I quite like them. We have one at the bottom of our garden as do our neighbour.

If it was right outside my bedroom window it would probably annoy me but anywhere else I wouldn't care.

surely you could tell on the other thread, most people hate them

SapphOhNo · 15/06/2023 15:26

Are you ok with pissing off your neighbours? If yes, get one.

Daisydu · 15/06/2023 15:27

Read my thread I started today. No. No . No.

It sort of seemed to turn into a general discussion of neighbourhood gripes at what people do in their gardens, and I thought it would probably attract people who hate them, due to the vibe of the thread. That's fine, but I didn't want to derail by trying to get a range of opinions on a thread started by someone who clearly hates them, cos I thought that would be irritating.

My thoughts exactly lol 🤣🤣🤣

I’d like to hear some. Maybe I’ll buy some off the back of this thread. Thanks, OP!

Most people on that thread hate them.

I was curious ..apparently the wind chime market is set to grow by 5% over then next 7 years 🤔. Although it was a site trying to then sell me their market research so it I’m going to to take the information with a grain of salt.

Yeah, I think I will probably buy it regardless, having wanted it for so long, and then judge it based on what it actually sounds like in my garden and how often it chimes. Definitely don't want to make everyone in the vicinity unable to relax in their own gardens!

Doesn't bother me but I know it bothers other so I have a little one on the inside of my window. It came from my mum's house and it sounds like my childhood. My neighbours have just put one in their garden and it sounds lovely.

cadburyegg · 15/06/2023 15:32

God no, don't get one.

When we moved in I threw away the wind chimes that the previous owners had left in our garden, they irritated me. My neighbour made a point of thanking me for it 😆

Imo the main issue with them is that they are there alllllll the time. Even a loud dog or child isn't making a noise 24/7

MsMollie · 15/06/2023 15:32

Right at this very moment I'm tempted to record the racket around me, you definitely won't hear my wind chime. I may consider replacing it with a set of symbols and a foghorn.
School is out and the grannies have suddenly appeared with all the loud instructions that comes with getting children out of a car and 10 steps to the house. The psychotic mini mongrel something dogs are going berserk, David and Alistair (neighbourhood men) are attempting to communicate over the fence with each other, Beavis and Butthead style, a child is wailing about snacks. Its quite comical.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 15/06/2023 15:34

Put them in your bedroom overnight next to a fan. YOU want to hear them. Your neighbours don't.

I wish you would!! 😂

I think this is kind of the thing, there's so often noise from people doing their own thing when you live around other people, like mowing, strimming, DIY, power-washing, music, smoke from fires and BBQs etc., so before this thread I was definitely more pro-windchime-in-the-garden because I consider neighbourhood noises just part and parcel of not living in a remote detached house. But the other thread piqued my concern! I was in the garden of my new house the other day, just popped by, and the next door neighbours had a bluetooth speaker blasting Ibiza tunes and a BBQ going.

Hate them
If I lived next to you I'd buy a recorder and play it badly every time you were outside

TheShellBeach · 15/06/2023 15:36

I'm not a fan of them.

This is interesting and something I hadn't imagined people feeling. Sounds unpleasant and definitely not what I want to inflict on people. I think I'm erring on the side of trying it outdoors, and if breezes seem to catch it a lot (as opposed to the occasional chime), I'll find a spot indoors for it that gets a bit of air flow.
