To get a windchime??

tattygrl · 15/06/2023 15:03

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

I'm going to buy a windchime... my neighbours don't care if their dog barks or wakes me up early, nor do they care if their kids are noisy or if the sound of them bouncing on a trampoline is annoying to others. So meh, I'm getting the windchime 🤷🏼‍♀️

riotlady · 15/06/2023 18:03

The problem with wind chimes is they’re not an occasional seasonal sound, like the bbqs and music and trampolines that have been mentioned. My neighbours trampoline is mildly annoying but at least they’re not bouncing away in the middle of the night or the dead of winter. Windchimes are bloody constant, every time there’s the slightest breeze it’s tinkle tinkle tinkle. It’s like leaving your speaker playing music in the back garden even when you’re gone.

NorthStarRising · 15/06/2023 18:08

Children, dogs and motorbike tuning are not seasonal either.
I find windchimes soothing, they help me not yell ‘Shut the fuck up!’ at children, or other yapping creatures free-ranging in gardens.

garfieldeatscake · 15/06/2023 18:13

I love our wind chime, but we don't have any neighbours!

Please link to the one you're coveting, I'm thinking of getting one but haven't seen any nice ones, don't worry o live rurally, no neighbours to annoy.

But if you're not getting it to ruin the lives of your neighbours, why bother?! 😉 I'm on my commute at the mo but will try and remember to link my dream wind chime! I'm still going to buy it, but have decided to hang it indoors, then bring it out with me on occasion when I fancy it.

I am surprised at the hatred for windchimes.
I was thinking of getting some (some small ones, does that make a difference?) after hearing them in a friend's garden. I think they're beautiful!

I've done a bit more Google-research since posting, and I think the consensus is that smaller is quieter, but bigger... tubes? (whichever the bit is that actually makes the sound) creates a deeper, more resonant sound that tends to be less tinny and irritating. So if you can find one within those confines, I think you're on the right track Grin

They are occasional though, unless you literally leave your children in the garden 24/7 and they never sleep.

People who leave their dogs to bark constantly are the worst though, I’d put that above windchimes on the antisocial noise scale (especially since they’re usually dogs that have just been left all day so it’s cruel on top of annoying)

bitingcat · 15/06/2023 18:26

My neighbours have windchimes, they make a low mellow sound which I really like... and I'm normally quite grumpy about other people's noise!

Justleaveitblankthen · 15/06/2023 18:50

Why not just take a stroll around your local cemetery to get your fix of death chimes?

If it's anything like mine, all the mighty Oaks and Ash trees are littered to fuck with them 🤨

Agree. Barking dogs and playing music are the worst.

Dogs that don’t have to the sense to know when to bark at an actual threat, which is good, and when not to, are so annoying. Our springer only barked once, when he thought someone was breaking in. He never growled at children or tried to bite them, he was so gentle with them. Even got along with squirrels and cats and other dogs, and with birds, against his innate breeding. He was a very smart, friendly, and lovely dog.

stepfordwifey · 15/06/2023 19:11

Had to knock and ask our neighbour to move theirs. During the warm summer with windows open, it drove me insane. They were very apologetic and took it down.
Totally selfish to inflict it on someone when you're well aware it might be a nuisance.

illbeinthegarden · 15/06/2023 19:13

The lady opposite put a wooden one up a few weeks ago... it's fucking annoying as shit!! I don't care in the daytime but it's clatters all night! If she took it down on breezy nights it would be so much better.

Ooh I am very UnMumsnetty as I love a wind chime! Just take it down if the weather is going to be stormy

YABU. Anti social things.

What rubbish, other people have dogs and children making far more noise. I really have never understood the MN obsession about the sound of windchimes. If people want me to not have windchimes then they must keep their dogs, screaming children and noisy teens indoors!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 15/06/2023 22:31

I'm definitely being cremated if there's even the remotest chance of being buried under a sodding wind chime and irritated for eternity

When I was informed by Mrs. Long Garden I had presented evidence (she called it slagging) of Elastic Band Lady’s impoliteness to Elastic Band Lady herself mistakenly thinking Mrs. Long Garden was Elastic Band Lady and that Elastic Band Lady was a random commenter I was trying to persuade, when in fact Mrs. Long Garden was the random commenter who also had a long garden and a wind chime at the bottom of it, I literally spit out my drink and no it wasn’t an alcoholic one but maybe my next one should be 😄

MrsLongGardenWithAWithWindChimeNobodyCanHearEvenHerBecauseItsShit.

I wasn't at all being aggressive. I was just saying that not everyone had people at the bottom of the garden. I'm not going to argue about it though.

Sometimes people read the tone of a post which is not as attended.

Hallmark1234 · 15/06/2023 22:40

Please don't! They are bloody annoying if they're not yours!

My neighbour had them up and they nearly drove me insane! She was a fair weather gardener, wheareas I go out when it's windy. I had to resort to stuffing things in my ears to try to stop the noise of the horrible tinny tinkling, that literally got into my head. I eventually started playing a radio while I was outside. That worked!

I'm also not bragging. My house is probably worth a lot less than some of you who do have neighbours at the bottom of the garden.

I do love that I don't though.

UnfortunateTypo · 15/06/2023 22:49

My Mum had the most irritating wind chime ever, when I lived at home.

It was stolen one night and she never saw it again. 30 years later she still thinks it was a jealous neighbour. She doesn’t know my friends and I carried out ‘Operation Windchime’ and it ended up in a tip 😂

flimsywhimsy · 15/06/2023 22:59

Any chance you can post a link to the type you're thinking of buying, OP? I love good-quality windchimes and agree that the lower-pitched ones are much better and less likely to irritate than the small, cheap ones.

Just curious which type you're considering. 😀

I recommend Woodstock chimes, which are tuned to low notes. We bought their bronze Saturn chimes eight years ago thru eBay, though I note there are Amazon sellers now too.

I don’t have dogs, screaming children or noisy teens. Not even visiting occasionally. It’s just me here on my own, enjoying the peace and quiet. Do we have a deal that you will take down your wind chimes if you live next door to me?
