To get a windchime??

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

I should have added:

YABU: don't put up a windchime
YANBU: It's fine, go ahead, enjoy

YABU. You’re literally buying something that makes noises others have no choice about.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 15/06/2023 15:05

YABU. Anti social things.

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2023 15:05

Only if it is large and made from metal.

Place it somewhere where it is windy and let your neighbourhood share the joy

🤣 🌬 🍿

gamerchick · 15/06/2023 15:06

Might be worth getting 2 for when someone destroys the first one you put up.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 15/06/2023 15:06

I have a wind chime, I kept it inside for years but my neighbours put up a giant flagpole that rattles around permanently in the wind, so I’ve put it outside for summertime.

I can think of much worse things coming from neighbours gardens than a wind chime.

PlimplePlop · 15/06/2023 15:06

As someone who is made quite miserable by noise from neighbours gardens, please please do not put up wind chimes. It is incredibly selfish.

JanesBlond · 15/06/2023 15:07

Windchimes are one of those things that the owner enjoys and other people find blood curdlingly annoying. If you must get one and hang it where other people can hear it, don’t leave it up all the time - just hang it out sometimes when you are out in the garden.

I mean put up by all means if you want your new neighbours plotting ways to sneak into your garden and cut its strings or whatnots off. I personally think anyone how intentionally puts a noisy thing in their garden and makes all the neighbours listen to it is unreasonable.

Blackbyrd · 15/06/2023 15:08

Assuming you're not taking the piss, a reasonable compromise would be for you to have the wind chimes you so desire but hang them inside. Then as you delicately waft beneath them you, and you alone, will be able to enjoy their sound

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 15/06/2023 15:08

I love windchimes so it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

MrsKwazi · 15/06/2023 15:09

Antisocial.

Not taking the piss at all!! They're everywhere, in peoples' gardens, in shops, not exactly a niche antisocial device 😂but now that I've finally got the opportunity to actually put one up I've become doubtful, and wanted a sense of just how universally hated, or not, they are. Think I have my answer...

Seriously OP, the only thing you are allowed to do in your own garden is to sit quietly, make no noise, and pretend you don’t exist.

Don’t wave at neighbors, don’t decorate to your taste, don’t have annoying vegetation.

Head down and silent enjoyment.

ArcticLadybird · 15/06/2023 15:10

Do what you like, but to give you some insight into how it could affect others, I have misphonia and my neighbours’ windchimes make me feel anxious and sick to the extent that I can’t use my own garden if I can hear them. That is an extreme reaction, I know, but worth sharing I think.

arghtriffid · 15/06/2023 15:10

My neighbours, yack, mess about with cars, have loud sneezes and are generally annoying. It is hard to relax at all as they are there 24/7. You have given me the perfect solution - many thanks.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 15/06/2023 15:11

From the comments on here it’s like we’re going to be getting ASBOs for wind chimes 😂Antisocial behaviour in a garden, to me, is loud music, shouting, swearing.. not a bloomin’ windchime!

FfeminyddCymraeg · 15/06/2023 15:12

I’d find a way to cut the strings. Awful things.

My aunt had something similar to what you describe and took it down eventually as it started getting on her own nerves.

Anyotherdude · 15/06/2023 15:13

I would, but then I’d also put an elastic band around them when it’s windy, and also overnight.

😂you're welcome, antisocial garden decor may become my new speciality.
