I've currently got a large tub of Sudocrem propping open my sliding sash window because it won't stay up on its own!

Must look delightful to passers by.

Has anyone got any other suggestions on how to multi purpose things?

I use those ferrero rocher (12) boxes for everything.

I saw one at the natural history museum storing a sample 😁

I do to this too!!
I have found their quality has decreased over the years, they used to be robust but are now bit flimsy, but still mega-useful.
Especially for storing/ sorting out batteries

Therandomtrekker · 15/06/2023 11:40

I used to use a plastic spaghetti spoon to retrieve eggs when the bantams laid on the far side of the coup.
I have repurposed it to retrieve small balls my children throw in awkward places.

The dog as a waste disposal unit.
😂

Old pint glass (clear, pub-style) and piece of rigid plastic as spider (an**d other insects) catcher

Old Icaew membership card for scraping ice of the windscreen in winter. Best use of it🤔

A hairbrush (with a sort of spiral brush arrangement) is used for removing cat fur from fabric & furniture)

Medicine syringe used to water tiny cacti in my terrarium

Bars of soap scattered and wedged in any drawers containing clothing to make them smell nice

Nail scissors used to trim the dog's unruly facial hair

I was very close to starting a thread asking how people store wrapping paper. Interesting idea, thanks.

I have a large drawstring bag for mine. I hang one end over a wardrobe rail and it pulls it tight around the rolls. If I Iift it a little I can loosen the cord and take a roll out. Mind I don’t need to look at it much as I only use brown paper so all rolls are the same 🤷🏼‍♀️

I keep all old plastic membership and bank cards.
i Use them to spread glue on to dip paper craft things into- just pout some glue onto card, spread out thinly and you place edge of item needing flushing down onto the film of glue so you get even coat and not too much.

My parents have an old fashioned coal cabinet not dissimilar to the one in the picture. It's used as a mini-bar now and holds bottles of gin/whisky etc. It's a real talking point!

BBQ tongs to close the kitchen window - easy enough to fling it open but harder to close.

Cork screw to pick a hole in the eggs before boiling
Play mat for kneeling down whilst gardening
Play mats for ground insulation when camping
Dolls house for storing books
Fork for scratching my back

Catsmere · 15/06/2023 12:13

We have a set square and a ruler positioned in front of our wardrobe doors to stop similar feline incursions!

@MooMooSharoo they do force us to be creative, don’t they? 😸

@NBLarsen what a good idea, those applicators are so expensive - and a spatula could double as a back scratcher.

BTW of course you all know that when archaeologists excavate your homes in a thousand years or more these items will be filed under "ritual objects"

@TeaAndStrumpets oh god, I can just hear Francis Pryor waffling about The Ancestors now. 😂

Ceramic plant pot and pot tray as a cutlery drainer.

An old kitchen knife for dividing plants. Also for opening letters.

A chopstick for dibbing seeds into compost.

A beekeeper's hive brush for catching spiders - they cling onto the hairs of the brush and are then easy to put outside.

I've also 're-purposed' a bit of pruned apple wood for opening/closing the kitchen window, because otherwise I can't reach it. It's shaped a bit like a shepherd's crook.

Wallpaper stripper for removing annual weeds in shingle

I use an old wallpaper stripper a lot in my garden. It has a thinner, sharper blade than a trowel so idea for digging up roots of weeds, cutting through clay soil when planting or to scrape moss off the drive.

wisewomanmummy · 15/06/2023 12:36

I use Ferrero Rocher 12 boxes to file my eyeshadows (in colour order) 🙄 and clear plastic food bases to keep spice jars tidy and easy to clean underneath.
Old flannels to wipe car windscreen and a fluffy feather type duster to catch spiders and put them out of the window.

Cuteepie · 15/06/2023 12:38

I love threads like this.
I use

  • a spatula to tease items from high shelves
  • expired bank cards to scrape baked on food from ovenware
  • expired bank cards to fill holes in plaster. (As a PP said, they’re invaluable for scraping off ice.)
  • Two spare heads for my spray mop: one I dip in white vinegar then mop the tiled walls in the bathroom, the second one dry to dry and buff up the tiles. No stretching, no precarious balancing on the bath sides. Job done in five minutes with excellent results.
  • my onion chopper to chop up cooked cubes of carrot and swede
  • cleaned plastic hair dye bottles as mini water squirters in the local pool - the DGC and all the other children love them
  • an old fork to tease out the roots of weeds
  • an old bread knife to divide plants in the garden
  • a pipette to squirt disinfectant into the sink overflow

Old flannels to wipe car windscreen

Forgot to add, we use flannels in the kitchen to wipe surfaces. They last ages and are very absorbent. .

Ice cream tub is a packet sauce / herb mix sachet storage.

Wrapping paper lives in an old fan box.

I alternate between hairspray and vitamins, depending on how open I want the window

flabbergastedandfumbletooted · 15/06/2023 12:54

The unbroken wooden chopsticks that you get from a take away that still form a tethered < shape - for a cat food pouch emptying device.

open the top, slide the base of the pouch between the prongs and pull up and the two lengths of the chop sticks will squeeze the pouch as you pull so all the food comes out. No fiddling or flicking of the pouch and you don't ever get food on your hands. If any gets on the chop sticks they can go in the dishwasher.

I use a rubber spatula for smearing my eczema cream onto the top of my back that I cannot reach otherwise
