I've currently got a large tub of Sudocrem propping open my sliding sash window because it won't stay up on its own!

Must look delightful to passers by.

Has anyone got any other suggestions on how to multi purpose things?

@RobertaFirmino Use Pampers like other normal people who do not store shit scrapers in their bathroom.

And add yet more plastic to landfill, along with the expense?

They sell the liners that you put in the bin, but I suppose if you're trying to reduce waste that's not ideal.

I used to use liners my kids nappies.
You just hold the liner over the toilet and drop the poo in it, then bin the liner.👍

I store rolls of wrapping paper in an old suit carrier, hung up in a cupboard.

I store mine in an old draw-string carrier sack which is meant to hold a fold-up camping chair. The chair ripped and had to be thrown away but the bag was perfect. It's a great size for rolls of wrapping paper and almost holds itself upright independently. It's such easy access and doesn't fall all over the place it's great!

The only problem is there's still a picture of a camping chair and sometimes I forget it doesn't contain the chair and wonder why on earth someone put a camping chair in the cupboard under the stairs instead of garden shed! 🙈

Thanks Gettinglikemy mother, I just got all my stored linen and cotton tousers and jackets out and though clean they are wrinkled. I was thinking of just giving a quick rinse in the machine but your tip will make ironing easier. Only one I can think of is that I reused old sofa seat and back cushions to raise my mattress as I need to sleep with legs higher and hate being low down. Now I sleep like a princess.

If you fill the spray bottle with some very dilute fabric softener, you can just leave the garments on hangers, spray liberally and smooth with your hands. No need to iron.

Not me, but “D”H, who, despite having a garage, workshop and toolshed, full to the brim with tools, finds that a dinner knife (the ones from the “nice” set) works just as well as a screwdriver: on the screw, that is. Some of the knife tips have been mangled because of this habit - Grrrrr😡

My ex used my best plates and kitchen trays for his seedlings - they never came up good again after (ingrained black dirt and limescale) and he lost interest in using them once the seedlings got planted out or repotted, so my stuff got ruined despite my request and my helpful purchase of proper trays for this purpose 😠

Scouring with white vinegar and an old toothbrush should restore their brilliance, WhatANewb.

CatsRebellion · 16/06/2023 08:39

A small oval Pyrex roasting dish as the cat's water bowl. He drinks so much more since we switched from a round bowl!

We have Velcro attached nets over our windows to stop cats getting out / bugs getting in. For the one over the kitchen sink that I can't reach I have to use a fork to undo the Velcro at the corner and lift it up, then a walking stick handle to hook over the window handle to open and close it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/06/2023 08:56

@tomorrowalready , funnily enough, we stayed recently at a massive place in France belonging to a relative of dh - it has a laundry room with 2 washers and dryers - plus a helper who does it all - and one of those really fancy irons and ironing boards, plus an ironing machine for all the sheets from umpteen bedrooms.

I went to iron something of mine - and lo, hanging right beside the fancy ironing board was a spray bottle the same as mine!!

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/06/2023 09:52

I think there would be a massive market for remote controlled windows over the sink! I know it's traditional to have the sink under a window but it is pretty inconvenient. Not only is it difficult to open but also difficult to clean. I used to climb on the worktop to clean mine. My next house will have the sink against a blank wall.

Also: nappy scraping MNetters, I salute you! Thank you for helping to save the planet. Nobody has yet suggested using an old bank card though....

Not terribly often with our current dog, but our old boy had progressive kidney failure in his later years and our old girl had temporary renal insufficiency after a long course of steroids and then got a bit leaky in her old age and had to be monitored for a while in case it was her kidneys/a UTI (in the end, she went on HRT and it fixed her overnight). In short, while it's not a daily pursuit, it is not entirely unusual to see one of us following a dog round the garden with a ladle while the other stands at the back door with a funnel and a jar.

Oh bless you! I had to ask as never had to thankfully get one from our girl!!

spiderlight · 16/06/2023 10:21

To add: getting a urine sample from a dog is many, many orders of magnitude less traumatic than getting a stool sample from a teenager.

Failingatthemoment · 16/06/2023 12:33

A mop to clean the bath. Squeegee for after the shower and an old credit card to scrape excess flour/pastry after baking - also used to scrape play dough off the table.

When I run out of clips to seal bags of various things, ie pasta or rice etc, I'll use a clothes peg!

I tried the specific bag clips and didn't get on with them so bought household pegs for this specific purpose (I don't have a washing line). Sent sons off to uni with their own supplies and they're all still being used now 10 years later.
I also use kitchen tongs for items stored on top of cupboards - the spare foil, cling film and kitchen towel and the top shelf of a couple of cupboards. If I can't get them that way I call for help or have to get the step stool out!
I also use washing up liquid for stain removal before washing. Great for grass, blood, tomato etc and always have some on hand.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/06/2023 13:44

I use an apple corer/slicer to cut up potatoes for wedges.

The fly swatter reaches Hot Wheels that roll under the sofa.
Gü ramekins are used as paint pots.
Big blue Ikea bag is for dirty laundry.

So what persuaded you to give up your previous lifestyle?

Seriously, that is brilliant. I want one now!

Yes, this post begs so many questions!

In my case, or DH's case, anything in the kitchen can also be - and is - used in the garden 🙄

Years ago friends would come round the house and go outside to smoke.

I bought a terracotta plant pot and turned it upside down in its saucer, so that they could use it as an ashtray by putting the cigarette through the hole. I left it out in the garden all the time and you'd never have known what it was for.

It would be months before it full and I therefore had to empty it (or they did) and I didn't have to look at the disgusting dog ends in an ashtray!

Yep, I have one of those. Idea nicked from a pub garden.

I use plastic kitchen tongs to get stuff high up that I can't reach

If I was more intelligent I'd put it somewhere I could easily reach

😐

This is genius, am stealing this idea!!

I use my pasta roller to make edging out of fondant icing for cakes.

I can't look at my soup ladle without visualising our pathologist using one to ladle fluid out of a stomach cavity during an autopsy.

I use a body bag to store spare duvets, toppers, pillows, sleeping bags etc in the loft. DDs ex bf was horrified when they were rooting stuff out for camping.
Also use DDs old Moses basket for wrapping paper, bows, tags, ties and assorted shyte stuff. It's shoved on top of a high cupboard & various kitchen implements employed to manoeuvre it down. Yes, I too have steps.

I've got one! I use silicone door wedges on either side of my washing machine in its cubby hole to (mostly) stop it moving when the spin cycle is on. I know when I overfill the machine they aren't quite enough but most of the time it's fine. Same wedges are either side of the cover of my boiler to stop it sounding like aircraft taking off!
