I don't get it. Both are charlatans but seem to have a core fan base.

If you're one, can you say why and do you believe they tell the truth?

I have a family member who likes both.
She reads and believes everything in the MSM.
She is a racist.
She believes in the im alright jack mentality of protect your own wealth and screw anyone else because lets face it, its there own fault they are not wealthy- sort of attitude.

Even she is now seeing Boris Johnson as the despicable person he is (the daily mail must be slating him again)
She still admires trump because he was a strong willed leasder who was not ashamed to do what he needed to deliver for his country (didnt care about his policies, corruption etc etc.

tiggergoesbounce · 11/06/2023 17:11

Boris should have stayed a journalist. He was very good at that
He got sacked for blatantly making up stories to be printed (to lie to us )

lazyfucker · 11/06/2023 17:57

starmer will be just as incompetent but with added prissiness and sanctimony. And spite.

I can sort of see why certain people would describe Starmer as prissy and sanctimonious, though I don't agree myself. But what on earth makes you assert he will be spiteful??

I think both Johnson and Trump have been very successful at appealing to those people for whom life has been pretty shit and somehow convincing them that they understand their woes and care about making their lives better. Despite being part of the very system that they claim to be bucking - well, certainly in Johnson's case.

Much as I hate him, I saw a video once of Johnson analysing one of Churchill's speeches and pointing out the Latinate and Germanic words and explaining the differences and impacts of the two styles. It was very interesting and he was articulate and engaging. It was only ruined by the female presenter he was talking to who was going all breathless and giggly every time he said a long word. He does seem to have some sort of magnetism over people. Fuck knows why - I can't see it myself. Watching that I thought how much better the UK would be now had he gone into academia, written some books, done the celebrity boffin thing and, let's face it, shagged lots of students along the way. We'd all be so much better off - well, not the young women he'd have shagged but he's done that anyway.

You'd have to have pretty shitty core values for Johnson and Trump to appeal to you, IMO.

100% agree.

Lefties like him are always spiteful. See his policy on private schools (and previous labour policy on grammar schools and the assisted places scheme). Achieves nothing other than a kick in the teeth for the people they don’t like.

Womencanlift · 11/06/2023 19:19

But at least they both know what a woman is and for

🙄 Yes cos that makes up for everything else Boris has done

Not even going to comment on Trump as he is just a joke and not even worth a discussion

cantab94 · 11/06/2023 19:29

You also have to remember that over the past 20-30 years both country's leaders have been extremely incompetent and have made life more difficult especially for the young and poor (I am in my mid-fifties and was doing quite lowly jobs in the late 80s/ early 90s but think I had it much better re housing and pay than young people do today). So eg Trump saying he will bring back jobs to America which have been off-shored is very appealing.

Its spiteful to try and find ways to fund the best possible education for every child in the country.

Ok.

'They can both be charismatic'

They're not remotely charismatic. Thats all just hype. They're tedious, boring old wind bags who are only interested in themselves. Both full of endless martyrdom. Shit, rambling public speakers. Cheap little showmen, nothing more

In the flesh he is. It might not appeal to all but it's why he was voted in.

FlamingoCroquet · 11/06/2023 20:08

I don't think you'll get many Trump supporters on MN, or anywhere outside the US really. I have a friend who supported Trump - she is Californian and from a working class background, not liberal university educated etc. I met her when we both lived in another country, and well before Trump was up for election!

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 11/06/2023 20:12

Trump is a gung ho buccaneer type business man with dubious morals.
Boris is completely different and I don't know why they get lumped together?

ThisSummerBetterBeDarnGood · 11/06/2023 20:13

@FlamingoCroquet i also have a us friend, from new York but roots in California and very well educated indeed.

She supported trump.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 11/06/2023 20:19

Point of order: Johnson has never been a journalist. A Journalist reports the news, is usually trained and is required to follow certain principles of accuracy. An honorable profession.

Johnson was a Newspaper Columnist - which is just someone who writes whatever twaddle they feel like essentially for entertainment purposes and with no requirement for anything they say to be true. Just "opinions".
Johnson was sacked from at least one such job for making up quotes.

UsingChangeofName · 11/06/2023 16:09

If you watch people interviewed at Trump / Republican party rallies, there is a sort of brain washing culture though.

So most of the people actually do seem to believe the ludicrous stuff he spouts about conspiracy theories and election rigging and so forth. They presumably live with and or socialise with people who think the same as them, and they watch the particular "news stations" that support their theories, in the same way people used to read the particular newspapers where headlines / reports / stories echoed what they were already thinking . These days it is more about algorithms on your social media, but same principle - you end up in an echo chamber and not really thinking rationally.

YABVU. You won't get a sensible logical answer to the question.
But at least they both know what a woman is and for.

Quite, BoJo has probably lost count how many children he has fathered.

PleasantOwl · 11/06/2023 20:38

I remember back in the day, when Boris was a minor celeb presenting stuff like Have I Got News for You. He did have a sort of watchable, affable charm about him that made you want to watch him.

Utter disaster as PM, though, obviously, utterly unsuitable and unfit for office.

Yes, for Trump, a woman is for raping or assaulting.

For Johnson, they're for impregnating.

They give people simple answers in a complicated world. They're like nursery rhymes when everything else is Stravinsky.

People like a rule breaker who gets away with it too, people who go by the book are boring.

I wouldn't vote for either of them but it's not that hard to understand.

Oioicaptain · 14/07/2023 18:10

I appreciate that Boris is the British equivalent of Trump, but I don't think that he comes close to the actual madness of Trump! Trump is a nasty uncaring man through and through. Boris is an arrogant blogger and a chancer with more concerns for power and popularity than for genuinely helping people, but I don't think that he's a nasty vindictive individual in the same way that Trump is.

Riapia · 14/07/2023 18:33

Entertainment value.
For me it’s the way that they can make other people froth and make themselves look ridiculous when disagreeing with them.
Great entertainment.
😁😁😁

Yes. They totally know that women have grabbable pussy, and you can fuck them whilst your wife has cancer.

Johnson's ex wife was diagnosed with cancer a year after they separated. Please get your facts right or else you show yourself up saying 'fucking' and 'pussy'. Are you 15?

Anyway back to the op. Couldn't care less about The Donald, Johnson however was a brilliant PM who got us through covid when Labour would still have us meeting in groups of 6, he was shafted by a hysterical leftie media featuring Cake Boy Paul Brand, an 'impartial' report from Sue (chief of staff for Labour) and a 'impartial' committee headed by Harriet 'I hate Johnson' Harman. Impartial.

@Janiie while you are here, any chance you could explain why you think it acceptable for a 56 year old to hold and lie about an illegal birthday party?

You do realise that poster was paraphrasing Trump, right?

"Boris was a brilliant PM" wow. Is that you, Pfeffel?

Anxioys · 14/07/2023 18:47

They are con men and a lot of people either don't mind that or really can't tell.
