To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

The thread made me think of this. The poor woman has life changing injuries and was made a mockery around the world for it.
McDonald’s hot drinks are still undrinkably hot, hotter than anywhere else.

In this case, whatever the reason it sounds irritating, but no harm done, just don’t return.

The shocking thing for me was the fact McDonalds were aware that their drinks were so hot they would inevitably will severely burn people but felt it made more financial sense to take the law suits over the cost of changing their machines and practices.

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

You are shaky from it???

Ahhh come on, this is ridiculous.

determinedtomakethiswork · 11/06/2023 14:14

Did you notice if she put it in the microwave?

Flakey99 · 11/06/2023 14:14

I can’t believe you didn’t complain at the time about it being too hot and taking too long to make. 😳

Jeez, what’s wrong with some of you that you’re more worried about ridiculous judgement from random people than making it clear that you expect to be treated fairly? No wonder a lot of staff working in the service industry in the U.K. are so crap.

PocketfulOfMiracles · 11/06/2023 14:15

If you want immediately drinkable in the chain shops ask for ‘kids temp’. The milk is frothed to the heat they use for kids chocolates and babycinos.
Presume this would also work in a regular cafe.

InsomniacVampire · 11/06/2023 14:15

I would complain about the rude service, and the fact the coffee was not nice, not the actual temperature.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 14:15

@sunnydaytoday0 theres a big range between 55–65°C (139–149°F ideal temp) and 100 degrees C, the boiling point of milk.

Are you for real?? I hate it when my coffee isnt hot enough.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 14:16

No but it felt like that kind of burn tbh.

Shaky? Please 🙄

You've never had a burn then?

It's a burnt tongue, are you always a drama queen? Is that why you immediately thought she must dislike you rather than think it was an innocent mistake?

There's a middle ground between hot as lava and lukewarm you know 😁

Inkypot · 11/06/2023 14:18

@Rollonannualeave people are being blimmin' horrible to you on here and I'm not sure why.
Maybe they're all grouchy baristas themselves 🤷‍♀️
Yes you absolutely should highlight it to the business owner. It's not ok that you've been left in pain and discomfort from what was a simple trip to a coffee shop with your child.
People can make light of it all they like but can guarantee if you'd said the coffee splashed on your child as it was slammed down, you'd be getting far more understanding responses.
It's impossible to say whether the woman does or doesn't have an issue with you, we can't really tell and unfortunately neither can you. But it does sound like she forgot the order and rushed it then slammed it down to make a point.
Hope you do forward your experience to the business themselves and that you receive a far more compassionate response than a lot of the arsey ones on here. For now try having an ice pole if you can. It'll soothe your burn and hydrate which is needed.

I wondered about that. Microwaved milk would definitely ruin a coffee if heated for too long.

I think being shaky after a burnt tongue is a bit dramatic! Yes I have burnt my tongue before, hence why we should check if a drink/food is too hot before going all in for a sip or bite. Lesson learned.

How do you check temperature without a sip? I didn't have a thermometer on me!

Temperature of the cup when I touch it. Often dip my finger tip in if I feel it’s too hot when trying to take a small sip. Normally the steam and heat coming off it as I lift it toward my lips tells me it’s going to be too hot. If you’ve burnt urself that badly you are shaking then that’s hardly from a tiny tester sip is it?!

MsFannySqueers · 11/06/2023 14:21

I agree with @Inkypot ! Hope you feel better soon OP.

7eleven · 11/06/2023 14:23

Sounds like she’s just crap at her job. It is a bit paranoid to take it personally, I think.

Leave a crap review about the wait and don’t go there again. No biggy, really.

Strawberrydelight78 · 11/06/2023 14:23

I've worked in cafés before. Sometimes if the milk heater has been recently use. You have to wait a bit until it can be used again or it won't heat and froth the milk properly. But she should have explained why and brought your drinks order at the same time.

SlippySarah · 11/06/2023 14:24

How do people cope with actual real problems when an interaction like this results in such over-thinking?

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 14:24

@Mammamia2023 thick coffee cup felt OK. Was definitely a sip. Think it had been in the microwave or something.

God my dh burns the roof of his mouth on pizza every single tIme he eats one -the daft got never learns. Doesn't cause him to shake 😂

AllOfThemWitches · 11/06/2023 14:26

Seems a lot of people here know nothing about making coffee. It should not be served scalding hot. At best, she's a crap barista.

WestHamAreMassive · 11/06/2023 14:26

*git!

Riapia · 11/06/2023 14:27

I must remember never to order coffee from someone that looks you up and down in a judgemental way.
😉😁😁

Goldbar · 11/06/2023 14:28

This is where you need to enlist your child's help. Mine would have commented loudly about why my drink wasn't coming while I ineffectually and half-heartedly tried to shush them. And if I'd told them about the burnt tongue, they would have announced it to the whole shop and asked if I needed an ambulance (they've just covered "emergencies" at school) 😂.

jollygoose · 11/06/2023 14:29

I also agree with Inkypot and would certainly leave honest review
