To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

Jeezo wish I had the time to care about this nonsense!!!!!

Well you've had time to read about it and comment so it looks like you do have the time to care

Ruesy · 12/06/2023 19:42

I work in a coffee shop, we usually have one person taking orders/money/serving cakes etc and one making the coffee, good coffee isn't made quick to make so one person will carry on serving whilst people who came in before are waiting for coffee to be made.

Alinino124 · 12/06/2023 20:20

A Cappuccini coffee should not be very hot, nor any coffee.
Boiling water makes coffee beans bitter.
So she is correct when she says it should not be too hot.
It’s also dangerous and many a person has been scaled by this action.

Rollonannualeave · 12/06/2023 20:34

@SylvieB74 sorry to hear about those experiences and thank you for the wise words. 🙏

She should buck up then and do a proper job. That does not include being rude to customers. Obviously.🙄

Aaah ok, I guess you were there then to witness this rude behaviour. Rightio.

Just because an OP says she was rude, it doesn't make it so.

Noone knows what actually happened, and we never will! But judge away.

This kind of makes most debates on MN null and void.

None of us were ever 'there' and we all judge mostly from our own experience.

What a stupid argument.

You kind of have to roll with an OPs description of an event. Unless you were there of course.

I think we judge by the OP and still whinging 36 hours after having a sip of hot coffee, which “burned” her tongue, then burned her throat, still not able to drink a cup of tea…

had an apology, which says “again we apologise” pointing to more than one apology by the cafe…

yeah I think we’ve got the measure here.

NannaKaren · 12/06/2023 22:20

She sounds awful dont go there again!
people who choose to run cafes should be nice to their customers !

Avondale89 · 12/06/2023 22:23

This is hilarious. Has anyone made a book of batshit MN threads? If not, they should and this ought to be first in line for inclusion.

Avondale89 · 12/06/2023 22:26

Marchintospring · 11/06/2023 20:22

Why post stupid stuff. Lots of people have explained the difference in temperature between coffee chains and the temperature professionally made coffees should be served at.

Because this entire thread is beyond stupid. It’s surely a parody of MN.

@Billyho why are you still here then if you have "got the measure"? I hope you don't work in a caring profession or a customer facing role. Perhaps you are the barista in question!

Question is should I give feedback via their Facebook messenger or just leave it?

I would give feedback. State the milk was over heated as it scolded your tongue and that service was very slow

Cabbagebed · 13/06/2023 00:28

SapphireSeptember · 11/06/2023 14:37

Bloody hell! A cappuccino shouldn't be so hot it burns your mouth! I used to get annoyed at people asking for extra hot coffee when I was a barista because it ruins the coffee and scalds the milk. (Drinking drinks that are overly hot can cause people issues down the line too.)
Tea should be made with boiling water, most of the time. Some types need cooler water. Hot chocolate needs the same as temperature as coffee (not boiling water, as a guardian article claimed.) I tend to drink tea when it's barely warm anyway.

What kind of issues can drinking overly hot drinks cause 😬 I drink my hot drinks really hot…

You think everyone in pain should immediately go to A&E? No wonder it's fucked.

Rollonannualeave · 12/06/2023 11:38

Back of throat still hurting. Can only conclude she nuked it in the microwave. Still can't drink hot drinks. I'm livid today to be honest!

Mayhe she did, maybe she forgot your drink then panicked and warmed it in the microwave. I find it hard to believe if it was as hot as you say that you wouldn't have noticed it when you were holding it? Or was it in a mug in which case the steam would be coming off (sorry haven't RTFT). I think you're paranoid and should get over it.

Cariadm · 13/06/2023 04:34

There is no getting away from the fact that some people are just weird and it has to be said that includes a lot of serving/waiting staff who really should find another way to earn a living! They can be rude, abrupt, offhand or just downright unpleasant and inept!! 😠
Many many moons ago I was a waitress and I quickly learned that good service = good tips and that being rude or offhand to customers was counter productive! However, with the advent of the cashless existence many of us now lead it's all changed and tipping is just not a 'thing' any more, especially among the younger members of society. 😥
The catering industry is notorious for low wages and iffy working conditions and often staff are either badly trained or not trained at all so it's not surprising that the dissatisfaction of some staff would manifest negatively in the way they do their job?! 🙄
I have no trouble believing what the OP has reported...the saying 'there's nowt weirder than folk' is oh so true and in my 75 years I have come across quite a few very strange characters who's behaviour has sounded unbelievable, illogical and totally irrational in the retelling! 😱

No I’m not the barista, I’m didn’t look you up and down or serve you a hot drink.

Are you a drama teacher?

Day 3... hot coffee... the aftermath...

Citrines · 13/06/2023 07:00

OP, could you go back to the cafe today please and order a latte? Take a thermometer. The situation is critical and we need to know what this cafe are playing at. It's war by cappuccino - make no mistake.

SallyWD · 13/06/2023 07:04

Everyone makes it with boiling water. Of course it can burn, that's why you wait a bit before you drink.

You do seem determined @Billyho, 36 hours later, to beat the OP down on this, and to know better than the OP how badly she was burned.

I think ideally coffee shouldn't be this hot but I've experienced it enough to be cautious.

I suspect the delay which meant Op child had finished and not feeling welcome meant she felt under time pressure to drink up and gulped down really hot coffee - you can't really burn back of throat and entire roof of mouth with tiny sip.

She complained and can only avoid in future.

If she is burnt this bad and the pain continue past a few days then she may have an infection and will need at very least to see GP.
