To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

Yup sound paranoid

Casilero · 11/06/2023 13:48

Hmm well I have lattes all the time both at home and out of the home and they are never scalding hot so she's either shit at making coffee or did it on purpose. It's probably the former though since it took 15 minutes which is far too long to wait for one drink. Regardless, I'd not bother going there again.

Thesunnymood · 11/06/2023 13:48

What temperature is "scolding"?

PriOn1 · 11/06/2023 13:48

She was either having a bad day or is incompetent, or possibly both. Sometimes coffee with frothed milk does seem to take ages to be ready, but it sounds like she prioritised getting everyone else’s stuff out first.

Most outlets don’t serve cappuccino so hot these days. I like it so it’s hot enough that you can drink it pretty much immediately and it’s rare that it’s served hot enough to scald, but it’s probably not personal.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:49

@Casilero thanks. I don't think I will go there again. It's a shame as its a nice dog friendly place nearby with a little courtyard.

I regularly use the same coffee shop and the coffee is always a safe temperature and drinkable. One day the lady forgot and put chocolate on my cappuccino by mistake (I’m allergic to it) so I had to regretfully ask her for a new one. She was obviously annoyed and when I got my coffee it was dangerously hot, so hot that the first sip burned my mouth (I wasn’t expecting it to be scalding). So I think they do sometimes make it scalding hot on purpose out of spite.

OneTC · 11/06/2023 13:50

I returned a drink today for being too hot. The milk had been scorched to fuck and heated to the point it wouldn't hold a foam. It's a super nice coffee shop that I go into daily and they gave me a replacement instantly without question

rightioly · 11/06/2023 13:50

Someone is going to drag up the mcdonalds case. If you do some reading on it it wasn't just because it was hot it was because it was hotter than it reasonably should have been to make coffee.

crabbyoldappletree · 11/06/2023 13:50

Maybe she forgot your coffee, it happens. I've had some some burned tongue experience with caps and flats.
You are defo over thinking.

Elieza · 11/06/2023 13:50

You could be paranoid, or sometimes truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Perhaps you remind her of The Other Woman or her old bitch boss 20 years ago, who knows. But I’d not go back.

TripleDaisySummer · 11/06/2023 13:50

It just all felt off

Sometimes it hard to explain when there subtle off signals but coffee being hot is expected though I'd be more un happy and other's being seen to first.

Simplest thing is to shrug and not go again and give it no more headspace.

YellowHatt · 11/06/2023 13:51

I had a ridiculously hot coffee in a cafe once! At the time I wondered how they’d managed to make it so much like lava when usually coffee is just hot hot. Weird.

I don’t think she did it on purpose but it is bad service to serve everyone else before you so on that basis I wouldn’t bother going back.

Housenoob · 11/06/2023 13:51

I think she just forgot about you drink and then made it hurriedly when she realised.

isthismylifenow · 11/06/2023 13:51

I'm going with paranoid, yes.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 11/06/2023 13:52

A boy off topic but a few years ago I went into a Greggs after work to get tea and a sausage roll. When the woman put the lid on (I think it was when they added milk themselves) it wasn’t put on correctly and it spilled out and as it was boiling hot it scalded my hand. I recall saying owww really loudly as it hurt. The Greggs worker was half apologetic and half “oh you should’ve been more careful” but she put the lid on the cup before handing it or letting me pick it up, not me. So therefore I feel she should’ve put the lid on properly.

I had to go into the station nearby to run cold water for quite a few minutes on my hand. When I mentioned this to someone I was meeting later they said I could’ve sued but no way I was going to do that!

Spamlla · 11/06/2023 13:52

coffee being hot is expected
There’s a difference between “hot but drinkable” and “scalding to the point of injuring someone if they try to drink it”.

Allergic to chocolate????

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:55

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

I've no idea how hot the coffee was though - if she was really injured and not just hurrying to drink up to be on her way after the huge delay- she should of complained.

Anyway - not going back is probably the answer.

Mate irs coffee. This is like Maccy ds putting a warning on their Apple pies. Give over,😂

op. Is there a back story please, do you have other episodes of paranoia, feeling you’re being judged or persecuted like this?

The thread made me think of this. The poor woman has life changing injuries and was made a mockery around the world for it.
McDonald’s hot drinks are still undrinkably hot, hotter than anywhere else.

In this case, whatever the reason it sounds irritating, but no harm done, just don’t return.

Why are you shaky because you had a drink hotter than usual? That seems an overreaction.

Question is should I give feedback via their Facebook messenger or just leave it?

I’d leave it, personally.
