To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

Leave it. Think nothing more and enjoy the rest of the day.

But the fact this is getting to you could be a sign something else is "up" with you and may be worth paying attention to?

SemperIdem · 11/06/2023 13:59

Whilst I’m not disputing the coffee was so hot it was undrinkable, I do think it thoroughly odd that you have leapt to “she did it on purpose”.

Question is should I give feedback via their Facebook messenger or just leave it?

If you do you could just mention the poor service log wait and banging stuff down on the table.

Otehr than that up to you - depends how annoyed you are.

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

How did you get to age 45 without knowing how to drink a hot cup of coffee?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/06/2023 14:00

I’m pleased that not everyone here thinks coffee should be scalding hot. The fact that so many do explains why it is so hard to get a decent cup of coffee.

vote with your feet OP and find somewhere nicer.

fuckip · 11/06/2023 14:01

Sugar on your tongue can help with the burning feeling.

Shaky? Please 🙄

What temperature is "scolding"?

It’s the temperature a server heats the coffee to when they hate you for no reason apparently

ilovesushi · 11/06/2023 14:02

Does she own the place or just work there? I wouldn't go back. Sounds crap.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 14:02

@OneTC not just me then. I wished I had just asked for some cold milk to cool it down.

Shaky? Please 🙄

You've never had a burn then?

Mammamia2023 · 11/06/2023 14:05

I think being shaky after a burnt tongue is a bit dramatic! Yes I have burnt my tongue before, hence why we should check if a drink/food is too hot before going all in for a sip or bite. Lesson learned.

Runningonjammiedodgers · 11/06/2023 14:06

You are paranoid. She works in a cafe, I doubt she has singled you out for some reason. You are not that interesting. I'm guessing to her you are another customer, if anything it sounds like they forgot to make your drink. Probably because sometimes they forget. Not because she has take a special interest in you. I have no time for anyone who dwells on a 'funny look'. Such utter bollocks and people need to stop being so self absorbed.

burnoutbabe · 11/06/2023 14:06

I used to do mystery shopping at coffee chains and I always had to order a latte and then weigh it and take temperature.

There was a lot of variety in both those, often outside the accepted range.

So I know what you mean about being too hot -usually I can sip a latte as I walk home when it's takeaway.

How do you check temperature without a sip? I didn't have a thermometer on me!

longwayoff · 11/06/2023 14:09

You should definitely use. Hot coffee! Outrageous.

Fairislefandango · 11/06/2023 14:09

Any adult will have burned their tongue in their life. I honestly can't imagine it making anyone shaky. You are being paranoid, OP. Who on earth would plot to punish a person they don't even know for some unspecified reason by the ridiculous method of making their hot drink hotter? I mean... it's just a bonkers idea!

FrostyFifi · 11/06/2023 14:09

Good coffee (cappucino, latte, flat white) needs milk at a particular temperature. Too hot and it ruins the coffee. One very good coffee shop I frequent actually has a thermometer they use.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 14:10

@burnoutbabe thanks. You know what I mean then!

BreviloquentBastard · 11/06/2023 14:10

Maybe she forgot your drink. Maybe everyone else was having americanos and she had to wait for the milk to steam to do yours and accidentally overheated it. Maybe she was just having a bad day. I think leaping to "this stranger doesn't like me so made my coffee too hot on purpose in order to burn me" is extremely paranoid when there are many, many other more likely scenarios before malice.

What reason do you think she doesn't like you enough to want to burn you on purpose?

Nanny0gg · 11/06/2023 14:10

SouthLondonMum22 · 11/06/2023 13:39

Coffee is supposed to be hot.

There's hot and there's scalding...

sunnydaytoday0 · 11/06/2023 14:11

Coming next, my ice cream was too cold?

BrunchMonster · 11/06/2023 14:12

She probably just forgot yours or for some reason was making a batch of drinks and got out of order, and then when you reminded her, she was hurrying - when you hurry with the foam, it's often too hot and not as nice, and doesn't cool down the coffee, either. It can burn your tongue if you're not expecting it, sure. But to take it so personally seems a massive over-reaction! Maybe just try assuming that people are doing their best, that there is some other reason for whatever slights you perceive, and you will end up able to let things go more easily. Even if it turns out that someone is doing things deliberately - work on your first assumption being that they aren't, and you will end up being able to be more placid about it all regardless, which helps. There's not much else you can do about it if she doesn't like you for some reason, so the less headspace you can give to it, the better for your mental health.

Greenfree · 11/06/2023 14:13

TBH I would have asked her to make me another one. A cappuccino should not be that hot. I would leave comments and also mention the wait time and the RBF
