To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

Leave a review on Google, that’s the best revenge you will get. And go in with your partner sometime and see how she is then, it’s funny how you don’t get picked on when there’s a man with you! Be brusque with her and say ‘let’s hope it’s better than last time’ when you order (with a smile of course) then never darken her doors again!

Everyone makes it with boiling water. Of course it can burn, that's why you wait a bit before you drink.

Well, sure, but that's the water that goes in, not the drink that comes out. And it's never, ever boiling milk.

You'd expect your espresso to be made with water just below boiling, but because of how it's made, it's a lot cooler by the time it gets to your mouth, even if you drink it within the mythical ten seconds of pulling, because there's a lot of heat loss between the water input and the drink in the cup. It probably ends up closer to 70 degrees.

Even if it were actually boiling in the cup, it's cappuccino. Half the liquid is milk, and that milk shouldn't ever have been heated to above 70 degrees, and for a cappuccino you'd expect it to be lower than that.

So no, it shouldn't be capable of burning if it's been made properly.

You'd get closer with an Americano, particularly if it's been badly made, or of course instant. But that's irrelevant to OP's situation.

What kind of issues can drinking overly hot drinks cause 😬 I drink my hot drinks really hot…

Unfortunately there is quite a lot of evidence that points to it being a cause/risk factor of oesophageal cancer.

Drinking very hot drinks 'probably' causes cancer, UN says

A major announcement from the UN health body follows a review of 1,000 scientific studies

What temperature is "scolding"?

Hot enough to tell you off for drinking it.

Coffee? Served hot? Whatever next!

Hmm

I'm sure the people with comments such as this think they are very witty, but coffee, and specifically cappucino, should not be served anything like as hot as OP describes.
If you think it should be you've only had very shitty burnt coffee.

Go to Italy and taste a real cappucino. And try not to do as many Brits do and complain its not hot enough.....

FelisCatus0 · 13/06/2023 13:38

Not only does this thread show that a lot of UKers are ignorant as to how coffee should be made (NO, it is NOT supposed to be that hot!), but the gaslighting of the OP when people tell her she is paranoid about the server not liking her/looking her up and down etc. Why do women do this? Why do women attempt to invalidate other women's experiences and tell each other their instinct is wrong? Women have women's intuition, an instinct, we know when something isn't right or someone doesn't like us. Support your fellow sisters instead of telling them to ignore their instinct.

Thank you for that info! I had no idea!

FelisCatus0 - I am actually Italian Spanish. Still prefer my coffee extra hot, thanks very much. It's the only thing that wakes me up. As do many people - it's called personal preference. Imagine that! I always take mine back if it's not hot enough. Are baristas meant to be telepathic? What a storm in a teacup (coffee cup) this is . MN at its peak crazy.

But you know to ask for it that way, right? Because any barista worth their salt will know the optimal temperature at which coffee should be served, and those consumers who are outliers still know they have to ask.

And still you won't be getting boiling coffee. 'Extra hot' milk-based coffees are generally around 70 degrees, maybe a little more.

You could ask for piu caldo all you like in Italy, you're never getting scalding hot cappuci!

Seriously?.

Not all women are my sisters, I can assure you, not all women have female intuition that makes them right, some are paranoid.

Amazingly, women are different all unique.

CatfoodOzymandias · 13/06/2023 14:43

Lol at the "sisterhood" trope. I don't believe that women have any special intuition, and I believe it even less after being on MN for a while. That's so patronising.

I am going to be honest, I am shocked by this nonsense!

Really?

All women are sisters, why on earth would that be?

This.

women are horrible… many look each other up and down and judge each other by size, clothes being worn etc.
its crappy

Some are paranoid sure, but some hate serving coffee and are also shit at making it. I wouldn't be going back if I had to wait that long SND get a rubbish drink at the end of it.

How did this become about women's sizes? 😅

Men never look each other up and down, of course. This is why most of the suffering and war in the world is caused by women, especially those evil creatures who do not believe that vengeful baristas roam the land, just incompetent ones.

My personal preference is to have a cappuccino at the proper temp. And that's never going to take the roof of your mouth off.

OP had her mouth scalded by some boiling coffee though posters are telling her she didn't really and it doesn't hurt.

God knows if the shit service was aimed at OP but OP felt like it was.

Hilarious outrage.

Do you have any other paranoia symptoms/hypervigilance/ trauma issues?

I think I was on "full alert" for a while when processing trauma. But no thinking a server has it "in for you" isn't normal...

I do not think the server did this deliberately. I think she may have a rbf (I do, as it happens, not my fault, but unless I'm actively smiling people might think I am looking down on them). Many people complain their coffee isn't hot enough, many people ask for it hot, it's genuinely not a problem for it to be served hot as mostly we expect it to be hot. I think it's actually inconceivable to think she deliberately burnt your mouth. That part is your responsibility. I have burnt my mouth so many times due to lack of patience. I think because she took so long to bring your coffee, it made you overthink. She was probably busy and maybe a little disorganised, and maybe she forgot your coffee.

To be fair, if I want decent coffee and cake I go somewhere where that is their priority. To follow through I wouldn’t buy plants from a cafe because they wouldn’t be their priority.

Bless. These are actual cafes not someone running between the azaleas and the carrot cake. They aren’t even run by the same people normally . It’s not the hairdressers where a cup of coffee is a bonus.

The same for a cafe near a popular dog walking spot like the Op. Just because it’s not a proper coffee chain people should still expect a drinkable cup of coffee. Because it’s a cafe and it’s on their menu they need to be able to serve it.
